Might be true about staying off private property, but the cemetery is very public! So, therefore they HAVE to give you access. I live in Clayton on County Shop Rd but my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents live on Chaney Brach Rd (dirt road) just off 41, not to far from Corinth. This is where I grew up and learned all about farming and doing mechanic work with my granddaddy Rev. Samuel S. Baker. I have been at Anderson Baptist Church all week for Vacation Bible School and man am I ever glad that it's over (until another one next week). This willmake the 5th one since June. Hi Homer, Yes 'tis true....my GrGrGrandfather, Willilam Marion Gilmore did not make it back; also his records are rather confusing (what little bit I have obtained). His widow received a pension but did not seem clear at all (according to applications) about his regiment(s)...... Thanks for your continued work. JohnGilmer
The paragraph below contains a very important sentence which I've copied below for point of discussion - I added the words in brackets for clarity. > Among those unmarked graves [at Warr Hill Cemetery] is probably John >Warr and Nancy Ann Bass, the parents of Sylvester. As a descendant and long time researcher of the John WARR family, I have not seen the proof of the maiden name of Nancy, John's wife. As far as I've been able to determine, Winfred Horne of Clayton, (Barbour Co), AL speculated many years ago that her maiden name was BASS. However, all of the work I've seen that he did always has a question mark by the name BASS. In my own research I've been able to prove add'l info on the WARR family but proof of Nancy's maiden name has remained a stumbling block for me. I've long suspected the answer might lie in some unpublished family document and am very excited to see that her maiden name has been proven. Please share the proof. I have posted this to the list because I know there are others who are interested in this also. Thanks. There are many listings for Alabama citizens including those in Barbour Co.,
The Pike County Genealogical Society published a list of all cemeteries (with an associated map) and lists the names from the tombstones. Is there a similar map of cemeteries, list of cemeteries, and who is buried there for Barbour County? Bob Austin
Willie, Thank you for your prompt and very informative response... S.K. and Rhoda Shirah were my mother's grandparents. I have visited the church grounds and cemetery in years past. In fact, I made a picture of Rhoda's tombstone while it was broken. Their grandson, Bennett Teal, now deceased, had the tombstone repaired. For that, I am very grateful. ....Yes, I definitely want to get one of the books...Thanks again...... Betty The church is located in the south central section of Barbour County, which indicates that it is the church of which you write. There is a short history and then the constitution and then a Roll of Church Members indicating their status of leaving . I see a Solomon Shirah as a member who was excluded. That was circa Jan. 5th, 1861. The records of the church are given in dates such as May 9, 1835. Business included the reception of members, choosing of deacons and clerk(by name), etc. Minutes of the church are included. The records are presented about bi-monthly from 1835 to 1944, though not always that often in the later years. Mrs. Helms chose to include only the most interesting highlights of the later years. Altogether there are a total of 118 pages (8x11") of Bethel Primitive church records. S.K. Shirah (b.Oct. 1, 1818, d. Feb. 27, 1898) was church clerk for a long time during that time and is buried in the cemetery with 4 other Shirahs, including his wife, Rhodia (b. Aug. 9, 1836, d. Sept. 13, 1916) and 2 of A.S.K. Shirah's children, Gussie Arlevia (b. Feb. 26, 1892, d. Apr. 21`, 1893) daughter of A.S.K. and E.E. and Bertie Lee (daughter of A.S.K. and E.E.)b. Jan. 13, 1894, d. Sept. 18, 1898. Plus George Williams, Son of S.K. and Rhoda, (b. Apr. 3, 1878, d. Dec. 17, 1897) There is over a column of Shirah/Shirar/Shire ( at least 36 different given names) listed in the index with S.K. Shirah alone listed on at least 36 pages of the records. >>
Bob, The only published compilation of cemetery surveys in Barbour County is nearly 40 years old. It is available at Eufaula's Carneige Library. Several individuals, including myself have attempted to survey as many cemeteries as possible, but my full time job keeps getting in my way. Most of the ones we have surveyed are posted on the Barbour Site. If you have any lookups in particular just post them here and one of us will help you out if possible. Richard Price SOS 6-3
Hi Betty, The church is located in the south central section of Barbour County, which indicates that it is the church of which you write. Shirah alone listed on at least 36 pages of the records. The records show baptisms and inscriptions from the cemetery gravestones. You might wish to purchase the book since your family is so well represented in it. If so, the address is; Mrs. Lavinia Jordan Helms 103 Lakewood Drive Enterprise, Al. 36330 Phone; 334-347-6150 If Mrs. Helms sells all of this book then she is thinking of doing a second volume, since she has materials enough already for a second volume. I hope this helps and I am glad SOMEONE is finding THEIR Barbour County kin.<grin> Peace and Grace; Willie in California ----- Original Message ----- From: <SidneyV1@aol.com> To: <ALBARBOU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 10:06 PM Subject: Re: [ALBARBOU] Church Records of Southeast Al. > In a message dated 00-07-20 00:33:41 EDT, you write: > > << > Yes, Margie > I have the book, Church Records of Southeast Ala. > Willie in California > >> > Willie... Margie, I purchased the book, but sent it to a Bass descendant, since it mentioned her Allen Bass in the church records, it would have been too much for me to copy for her, i'll let you know as soon as I get it back, if you havent purchased it by then.
