    3. John, Don't think I know a great deal more other than there was a gob of Brooks folks from Perote who served in the war; most from that area were in Co G, (Perote Guards), 1st Ala Inf Rgt: Joel, J.B., KIA Atlanta, Caleb, also d. in service, Jackson, d. as POW, Balem, KIA Port Hudson and W.G.; also in there were some of the Vance soldiers: Jack and Thomas, who may have been the step father you spoke of; the 1st, being the first from the state to go to war war, had some yunguns and olsters; point of interest the old church where the Guards assembled is still there, being used to store hay; the church bell which called them to assembly is mounted in the Perote Cemetery; I occasionally drive up there and sit a spell, just to sop up some history and if ain't no- body about, I give the bell a crank. If you do find something on your soldier, would sure love to hear about it. Deo Vindice, Homer

    2. Thanks a million Homer. I doubt if I will ever know much more about William M. this side of eternity. There are some relatives in Birmingham but I have not been able to get hold of them. Miriam Mercer is buried in Birmingham also with the two youngest boys and their families. I do know that Mathew Walter Gilmore was a brother to my Willliam M. He made it through the war and settled in the Enterprise area. Regards, John

    3. Sabrina, I did not see a Barbour marriage for a M.D., M, D, or any first name beginning with those letters to an Ellen. I also checked the Dale marriage book, which begins in 1885. Many of my Blue Springs area ancestors were probably married in Dale since I cannot find them in Barbour. The Dale courthouse, of course, burned in 1885. Very frustrating. 2. Hi Homer.... Thanks so much for the information on Gilmore/Gilmer. The mixing of the names has been a point of confusion for some years now in family research. No muddying of the water, just a little more data to consider....maybe you can help me even further in sorting things out. This is what I am building on: 1. My William M. Gilmore/Gilmer is found in 1860 in "the Eastern Division of Pike County", Post Office, Brundidge, Date: Aug 15. 2. He lived next (or close) to his mother and stepfather, Malinda M. & Thomas J. Vance. 3. He was 22 years old (1860) 4. He had 1 child (my gr.grandfather), Mathew B., who was 2 months old 5. In 1870 his widow and 3 sons (born 1860,1862.1864) are found living in Perote with her father, Jacob R. Brooks 6. In 1870 Census I found his mother and stepfather in Bullock County, Bughall Beat No. 5, June 27 Still sorting........... Thanks again, John

    3. No, I haven't but I certainly will pursue this line. I am actually trying to find out if his wife, Anna, filed for a Pension. Didn't know if it would give me any information on her or not. She is the one I am really interested in as her daughter, from her first husband - a PASSMORE, is my great-great-grandmother. Thanks again! We looked for years before we found my GG Grandfather who supposedly died of measles. That is not what the diagnosis said. Anyway, it took my Mom several inquiries to locate him. Seems once he died, they simply said they had no record. She had to follow him through the months prior to his death in order to locate. Also received an amazing amount of information from the National Park service once we did locate his death record. This pertained to his burial. Good Luck and don't give up. 3. When I read this post from Homer where he said "If you listen real closely you will hear a "Thank You" coming from somewhere way far off." It reminded me of when my husband and I went to Scotland to search for my McIntosh line. We went to the battlefield of Culloden where the mass graves are marked by stones representing each Clan that is buried there. As I stood by the Mackintosh stone and placed my hand on it, I could swear that there was a "knowledge" of some kind that I had come to honor them. I'm sure your ancestor feels the same, Richard. We are all truly blessed on this list to have someone like Homer. He never ceases to amaze me with his expertise and knowledge of the Civil War, as well as his kindness, gentleness, sense of humor, and depth of soul. I, for one, know there are ranks of soldiers in gray "somewhere way far off" that salute him each and every day. Deo Vindice to you Homer. 3. John, The Wm Gilmore from Pike was k. at Moccasin Point, on the north end of Lookout Mt Oct 31, 1863; he was a Pvt in Co L of the 15th Ala; he would have been 28-30 years of age at d.; on the list of destitute families, his family, from Bug Hall Beat was paid $123.00 for Feb and Mar 1862; from the size of the payment, would have had a large family or they were owed back pay; personally, I doubt this is your soldier plus I find no record of him at Natl Archives. Have you considered Gilmer? there was a Pvt William M. Gilmer, Co H, 39th Ala Inf Rgt; Co H was from Barbour and he shows on a muster roll at Opelka dtd May 15, 1862 as being age 28; some of this company had previously served w. the 1st and 7th Ala Inf; he does have a record at Natl. Hope I have not muddied the water, sort of grasping at straws. Deo Vindice, Homer

He wrote the letter when he was about 78 years old and he was telling about the death of his son Daniel's wife. Very touching, and a testimony to his faith..
