Is this the Turner Howell that married Mary Jane Wise? Cal ----- Original Message ----- From: <Richardbprice@aol.com> To: <ALBARBOU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 24, 2000 8:05 AM Subject: [ALBARBOU] (no subject) Turner Howell was born 1831 in Monroe Co., GA, the son of Sarah Williams and (unknown) Howell. He migrated to Barbour Co., AL between 1845 and 1850 as did his mother, brothers Joseph, (married Martha Commander in Crawford Co., GA), Washington, and sisters Elizabeth and Mary. Turner Howell was hired in 1857 as overseer for John Horry Dent, the South Carolina aristocrat who had migrated to Barbour County. Dent owned plantations in Comer, Good Hope and other areas of Barbour County. Turner was placed in charge of over 1300 acres and 130 slaves. Dent kept a detailed journal of his plantation business and Turner's name was mentioned in it numerous times. Dent considered Turner Howell to be intelligent, obedient, and completely trustworthy. Turner was paid only three hundred dollars a year by Dent, a paltry sum for an experienced overseer. Turner, his wife Mary Jane Wise and their children lived in a house on Dent's plantation from 1857 until 1860. The plantation was known as "Bleak Hill". Turner got along well with the Dent family and whenever he had a sick child, the master or young Horry Dent would see to the plantation. On the eve of Alabama's succession from the union, Dent wrote in his journal: "Mr. Howell leaves my business, his time having expired. After four years being in my employment as overseer, he has discharged his duties as well as any overseer would have done." The following is a transcription of the contract between John Horry Dent and Turner Howell for his services as overseer. Contract with Howell as Overseer Howell came on the plantation 30 November 1856 to set in as overseer for twelve months. Terms of Contract. Howell is to receive $300.00 and his bread ? him the said Howell finding himself in every other kind of provisions and necessaries. signed Turner Howell Dent and Turner Howell maintained a good relationship even after they parted ways. On Monday, 6 May 1861, Dent recorded in his journal: "Bullocks Plantation. Went up to see how Howell was getting on at Bullocks, done so by Bullocks request. Found all well and doing well." The following abstracts were taken from the official Farm Journals of John Horry Dent: 25 March 1857 - We have about 150 acres bottom land to bed up. Directed Howell to commence planting cotton tomorrow 25th with 6 plows and let the balance portions to bed out the bottom lands. Greetings and salutations! What is the webaddress where I can see the photo's? My father and I went looking for the Blair Bishop cemetery a few years ago and could not locate it. We are working on a theory that William Blair (born 1805, SC-married Elizabeth Bishop) is possibly the brother of my 5G-Grandfather (John J. Blair Sr, born 1800 SC, died 1881 Pike County). It is my understanding that William and Elizabeth were buried in the Blair/Bishop cemetery. Also, somebody please tell me what I can do to help protect this cemetery. I am a Board Member of a not for profit organization here in Florida that marks and preserves historic WBTS sites. In that mission we have helped to clean up several cemeteries that had been neglected. I sure hate to think that while I've been working on other folks cemeteries, I've been neglecting a possible site of my ancestors. If someone knows an address or phone number for the Meade corporation, please let me know and I will at least make some contact to find out how much support I can muster with them. Also, does someone have good directions on how to get to the cemetery? DEO VINDICE! Bill Blair Deland, FL "M. Homer, do you have anything on Alexander McKinnon, b. 5/2/1844 in Clio serving in the Civil War? I know his brother, Daniel Murdock McKinnon b. 10/1841 served in Co. E., 7th AL Infantry but have no information on Alexander. Family tradition has always been that he walked home from Appomattox. Also, if it isn't too much trouble, do you have anything on a Charles W. Hicks, b. 4/1/1836 in Upson County, GA but had moved to Montgomery County, AL (from the Ebenezer Community outside Ramer/Grady area) when the War started. I was told he was in Gardners Inf. Calvary enlisted by Major G. H. Hunt. He died when my great grandmother was 2, so he died between 1862/1863. I have no idea where he is buried. He also had an Uncle named Charles W. Hicks b. 12/31/1817 who might also have served in the War. Anything you can do on either will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Joyce Wadsworth McKinnon

Just looking thru some notes ref Co commanders from Barbour at the beginning of the war. Capt John C. Clark, commander of Co A, (Pioneer Guards) 1st Ala Inf; his estate was estimated at more than 50,000 dollars; a commision merchant, he worked w/ the wealthiest man in the county, banker John McNab father of Lt James G. McNab, his second in command. Capt Alpheus Baker, commander of Co B, ( Eufaula Rifles) 1st Ala Inf; owned 38 slaves, farmed more than seven hundred acres, but his wealth was out-stripped by three of his Pvts, Edward C. Bullock, James L. Pugh and Henry R. Shorter, men of tremendous wealth and political power; needless to say, the three did not remain w/ the co for any length of time. Deo Vindice, Homer

Soon I will be working on Danner Cemetery, it is in horrible shape also.Have met a man that showed me where it was and he said he would cut me a road into it, and help me cut the trees out of it!Like I told him, the most we can do with it, without the help of ancestors would be to run any type of fence that was affordable, stand what stones can be found back up, get all of the trees, rubbish out that make it look bad and cause damage, that is the plan. This will not happen till Tucker is finished completely, but hey, least I already have the help I need lined up. Then if no one already has, we will be starting on the Bennett/Lee Cemetery, uhhhhhggggg , horrible shape also! But hey, we might find some stones underground! Tucker Cemetery is also on Mead land, so at least they should be glad they can mark that one off.
