    1. [ALBARBOU] Old family cemeteries and the families around them
    2. M. Daniels
    3. I keep shovels and garden equipment in the trunk of my car for just that reason. I also have large green trash bags. When I travel, I get my lunch to go and stop at a cemetery along the way most times I pack a lunch and just stop and do just what you have mentioned. I just dug out two stones from one cemetery that had sunk it seemed like over 2 feet. I took a small broom used to clean our cars and brushed off the dirt. I packed the dirt back down and put the marker back in place. The dates were very old her died in 1842. It was an old old marker it looked home made. I pull vines off graves and fences. I also carry loppers with me so I can cut back the tree limbs. You are right, it just takes someone anyone to just stop for a short while and make a small difference. The one that I remember the most is a headstone that I dug out and it turned out to be a child. And to this day I make sure that this stone is in good shape. The inscription read: Oh For The Touch Of A Vanished Hand And The Sound Of A Voice That's Still It gave me chill bumps. How true, there are so many of my family that are now gone that this saying holds true. Margie

    3. Cal, Typed everything that was in the book, which is arranged alphabetically. In the index, which lists people other that those with estates listed, there was: BUSH, Allen BUSH, Catherine BUSH, Council BUSH, Greenberry BUSH, John BUSH, Matilda BUSH, Moses E. BUSH, Rebecca BUSH, Sarah BUSH, Susan BUSH, William BUSH, William J. BUSH, William R. These folks would be heirs, executors, bondsmen, etc., rather than folks who have died and had their estate listed. 3. I think the following is in keeping with the recent train of thought on this list. I came across the following on the Internet several years ago. A note at the bottom read, "I type this poem on the back of 3x5 index cards, along with my name and address, laminate the card and attach it to the stem of a silk flower or flag and leave at my ancestor's graves." This would be a good way to let other folks, who visit the same grave, know that you're out there, hunting too! Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out on polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care it is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist, you died and I was born. Yet, each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled one hundred years ago spreads out among the ones you left who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew that someday I would find this spot and come and visit you. Lyn McIntosh-Sherwood Looking for JOHNSON/DEASE families in Barbour County, AL

    3. Bonnie, Amen! I second that! I have tried on five different trips to Barbour to locate three of the unnamed cemeteries on the AL Dept of Transportation map. I did not find any of them! I believe Bonnie, through all her hard work, has located two of them for me, and I look forward to the early winter when I go can down and find them for myself based on her excellent directions. I even stopped and asked neighbors about a certain cemetery that is apparently in the middle of a plowed field. No one knew anything. Odds are those markers have been dug up, plowed over, vandalized, etc. The end result is that they are lost forever. They could have well been my lost Charles and Elizabeth "Betsy" (nee HAGLER) LONG, early settlers of Barbour County. Some of the cemeteries are well maintained. Most of my paternal family/extended family is buried at Pea River, and it is well maintained. However, even it needs constant attention from family members. Terri
