    3. Greenville Advocate, March 26, 1874 TWO FINE PLANTATIONS FOR TEN DOLLARS!! What will be the Cotton Crop of the United States for the year 1873-4? Col. Ben Morris of Eufaula, Ala. has two large and fine plantations which he desires to convert into cash. Both are in southeast Alabama. One is in Barbour county, five miles from Eufaula, immediately on the line of the Vicksburg and Brunswick Railroad, and contains two thousand and sixty (2060) acres of land. The other is in Bullock county, two and one half miles from "Three Notch," on the Montgomery and Eufaula Railroad, and contains 610 acres. Both places are now in a state of cultivation and are admitted to be two of the best plantations in Southeast Alabama. They sold before the war for over $_0, 000 (?) [looks like 30 thousand]. On one of the places are thirteen head of cattle and two horses, and on the other, ten mules and one horse, with full sets of farming implements, &etc.(?), on both places, all of which go with the lands if disposed of on the following terms: Colonel Morris gives everybody, so disposed, a chance to guess what the cotton crop will be, in bales, for the present cotton year. Each guesser will pay ten dollars for this privilege, and all the estimates or guesses must be sent in by or before the first of May, next, as after that time no estimate will be allowed to enter the contest. Now, if as many estimates are sent in as will amount to $25,000, Col. Morris will, as soon as the crop is ascertained and announced by the New York Cotton Exchange on the first of February next, make a perfect title deed of sale of both plantations, stock, implements, etc.?, to the party who may have made the nearest estimate to the crop so announced. Col. Morris will retain nothing from either place, except the crops that may be raised upon them this year, and the property will be turned over on the first of December next, to the best guesser. If estimates amounting to no more than $10,000 are sent in, then the best estimate will take the ! Bullock place. If estimates amounting to more than $10,000 and less than $25,000 are received, the money in excess of $10,000 will also go with the Bullock place. If estimates amounting to more than $25,000 are received, all money over that amount will go with both the plantations to the best estimate. If less than $10,000 in estimates are received, then Col. Morris retains both plantations, and the money sent in goes to the best estimate. So that somebody who can guess well will get a handsome pile of cash. Messrs. Clark, Hart, and Co. cotton warehousemen, of Eufaula, will receive estimates and money, and receipt for the same. All estimates will be recorded when received, and the money deposited for safe keeping until the question is decided. Parties sending estimates by mail should give them both in words and in figures, plainly written, to prevent mistakes. Refer to Hon. James L. Pugh, Hon. _.(?) S. Shorter of Eufaula, Gen. H. D. Clayton, of Clayton, Ala. or to any reliable and responsible men, living in or acquainted with this section of Alabama. Address Clark, Hart, & Co. Eufaula, Ala. march 12

    3. Homer, My main interest in the THOMAS line is trying to find out what happened to the minor child of Charles E. THOMAS and Feriby LONG. I do think that Charles, son of Morton, either came back to AL from LA after the war, or else came back to AL to enlist with some of his extended family (THOMAS, HAGLER, LONG). I am not really a THOMAS descendant - just trying to round up all my missing LONG family members. Since Feriby was married in 1865, and was dead by early 1868, I can't track her in the census. Do you have a list, or know of a web site that lists the companies supplied by Barbour and Dale? The CSA Index book is arranged alphabetically, and the THOMAS section is huge. For instance, here are a few that I *think* might be from Barbour/Dale THOMAS (from AL) A. 33rd Inf Co A Aaron Hardy's Co (Eufaula Minute Men) Abram 39th Inf Co C Adam J. 6th Calv Co H A.F. 45th Inf Co C Thomas B. 6th Calv Co I C.C. 25th Inf Co B Daniel 1st Bn Hilliard's Vol Co B Daniel R. 33rd Inf Co G David J. 1st Bn Hilliard's Vol Co B D.H. 15th Inf Co H Sgt There are, course, tons more from AL alone, not to mention the other states. If I knew which regiments/companies were supplied by Barbour/Dale it might help me pick out those gentleman from the list. Thanks, Terri

    3. Mary Yaw, List, I have copied all entries for THOMAS from the following book and would be happy to do THOMAS lookups: The roster of Confederate soldiers, 1861-1865 / edited by Janet B. Hewett. Hewett, Janet. This book lists all CSA soldiers (not just AL). I currently have just the THOMAS entries. Hoping someone can point me in the correct direction for the CSA service of the sons of Morton THOMAS. His sons were (at least) Charles Engram, Jackson, Andrew, and Hiram Wade. Morton and his family moved to LA, but the sons might have come back to AL at some point. Trying specifically to find info about Charles E. THOMAS, who married Feriby Adeline LONG in Barbour County, daughter of Charles LONG and Elizabeth HAGLER, and moved to LA. Was he the son of Morton THOMAS? Mary - maybe you can help me wade through this long list to try to find CSA services for the sons of Morton?? Thanks, Terri

    3. This is the mail that was sent to me about the "Old Faulk Cemetery." Maybe someone on here will also be able to help search this old cemetery out, shoot, maybe one of you live near it and dont even know it! Dear Bonnie: I am the great great grandson of James and Rhoda Faulk through Lorenzo Faulk buired south of Midway, Lorenzo Kendrick Faulk buried in Oakwood cemetery in Montgomery and Alice Kendrick Faulk Schweizer buried in Cedar Hill cemetery in Vicksburg MS. Congratulations, I think it is great that you are collecting pictures of old gravestones. There are three graves in the McKenzie private graveyard. The Mckenzies were good friends of James and Rhoda Faulk according to some records but I know nothing about the McKenzies. The graves are still there. I doubt if someone dug the ground up that there would be anything remaining. About 1972 my Mother and I met with Marie Godfrey and we went to the graveyard. At the junction of the road that runs through Louisville and a road that runs east to ??? Corners is the Louisville Pecan Company or used to be. Go east on the raod about a mile. In 1972 the road was gravel but it is now asphalt. The road bends around a big tree growing on the south/right side of the road and the ground is elevated above the road. I understand that the area was mined for bauxite years ago and when the company came to the cemetery they did not bother it so all around the cemetery the ground in several feet lower. In 1972 I walked into the cemetery but the underbrush was so thick I could hardly get into the area. In a later visit I was told by some people further east that once the graves were fenced in and the grave area covered with rocks. The gravestones mus have been in a vertical position. I was told the cemetery was very pretty. In 1935 I visited the area but no one in Clayton knew of the cemetery so I did not see it then. Well anyway because the trees and brush were so terrible I gave up. A year or so later my wife and I again visited the cemetery. This time I came armed with shovel, axe and machete. I wanted to clean up the area where the graves were. I started chopping down the brush and got into the west side of the area. There were some foot stones but no gravestones. Believe me I really got hot so I decided it was not worth the work as it all would grow up in a short time. My wife noted a small piece of gravestone peeking out of the ground and I cleared it off and found James' stone broken into three parts lieing horizontal about four inches under the surface. Taking mu shovel I tapped around and found Rhoda's stone and -Jesse Edward's stone. Someone had pulled all three stones up, broken James' stone and thrown them on the ground. On one of my visits I noted the high school not too far to the southwest and it is my suspicion the culprits came from there. My wife suggested we take James' stone home which we did and it was plenty heavy. Later on we returned and brought Rhoda's stone home. I placed them on the side of my home and when we moved two years ago brought them and placed them in the ground in our flower garden. At one time I tried to get the local monument maker/undertaker south of Louisville to clean up the small area where the Faulks were buried and put in a new stone. Of course I was ready to pay whatever he charged but he was not interested. Its been a long time since I was there but I am now 87 years old and not liable to get to Louisville again. The last time I was there I found Jesse Edward's stone still lieing on the gound but moss and water were destroying it. What a pity, I feel very sad. I presume it is about gone. If you get out of the car and check you will see the ground where the cemetery is is the same level as the side of the road but all around the cemetery it is much lower because of the mining. I would sure like to hear what it looks like today. Have you checked the Louisville cemetery north of the Methodist Church? There is a stone in the front row for John Faulk 1806-1839. He is the half brother of James Faulk. His parents were William and Rachael Futeral Faulk, He married but had no children. For privacy reasons I am not including a name or the address. But this is what was sent to me.Hope it helps find these graves or helps someone in researching them. Thanks, Bonnie Tharpe ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
