Kelly Paul Graham Houston, Texas Dear Kelly, My great grandmother was Mary Boone Gibson, born Nov. 24, 1844 in Benton County, MO; died Jan. 1829 in Orange County, CA. Mary Boone Gibson was the daughter of Hawkins Martin Gibson, (born 1807 in KY) and his wife Sarah Bryan Bradley (born 1808 in KY). I do not find the name of John E. Dawson in my books. John E. was born in 1842 in Alabama, the son of John DAWSON (of South Carolina) and Elizaveth GIBSON (also of South Carolina). The Census of Alabama in 1850 list a "John DAWSON" (5 yo) in Barbour County,?a son of John DAWSON, "56 yo" from "SC". ? This John (or John E.?) is found in the 1870 Census of Dickson County, Tennessee, listed as being from "Alabama", being listed as of 28 years of age, and a Blacksmith by occupation. ? Could my John (E.?) DAWSON of Barbour County have been in the Civil War? Or, could he have just been uprooted by that war? What were the sentiments of the population of Barbour County, and what regiments might they have called up? ? Two of John E. Eugenia, There are a couple of mentions of Orr and Ellis in letters written by John Daniel Leslie from Union Springs to his wife and son in Birmingham in 1912. The sons had moved to Birmingham from Union Springs and their mother was on an extended visit with them there. Don't know if they will be any help to you but thought I'd pass them along: May 19, 1912 letter to son Hugh Leslie in Birmingham: "Tell your Ma that Mrs. Ellis is in Auburn with Fletcher this week. Hugh, what you reckon? Little Joe Ellis is to be married to Miss Baskin in a few days." July 25, 1912 letter to wife Mary Lula Raborn Leslie: "Tell Ed that Walter Orr was married to Billie Wilson's little girl Tuesday." Evelyn S. Leslie Remlap, AL
My Dad, Alston Branscomb [b. 1917], raised in Midway, Alabama (Bullock Co./formerly Barbour Co.), was taught by Mrs. ELIZABETH H. ORR in the 1st and 2nd grades [around 1923-1924]. The 1920 Union Springs census shows an Elizabeth H. Orr, Grammar School Teacher, age 53, boarding on North Prairie Street with the ELIZABETH & WM. C. ELLIS [Merchant, Dry Goods Store] family. She was listed as Aunt. Also living with them was Elizabeth Ellis's mother, MARTHA "Mattie" H. THOMAS, 70. As both have an 'H' & were born in Georgia, as were their parents, it is possible Martha H. might be Elizabeth H. Orr's sister. A newspaper reference from The Montgomery Advertiser, dated 1922-06-22, shows that "Mrs. Orr came from Union Springs, Alabama, to teach in Midway, Alabama". We have a photo of her. The 1930 Midway census lists Elizabeth Orr, widowed, having married at age 24, & a Public School Teacher, boarding with Annie Alley. However, she is shown as age 48, born in Alabama, as were her parents. A mystery! I would like to learn the Christian name of her husband, whom she would have married in abt. 1906. Alston graduated from Bullock County High School in 1935. He attended the University of Alabama from 1935 until 1940. He recalls: "Although my contacts with Mrs. Orr were limited through Junior & Senior High School, I would stop by the home in Union Springs, where she lived after her retirement, for a brief visit on my way home to Midway from the University of Alabama." According to the Ancestry.com. Alabama Deaths record, an Elizabeth H. Orr died in April, 1944 in Bullock Co. Mrs. Orr might be buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Union Springs, Ala. in one of the Orr lots or in an Ellis lot. Does anyone have information on Mrs. E. H. Orr? or a connected Orr or Ellis family? Is there someone willing to have a look for Mrs. Elizabeth H. Orr's grave in the Oakhill Cemetery & provide me with the details? I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. This information would mean a great deal to my 94 year old father. Eugenia B. I'm looking for some feedback on an ancestry website I created for beginners. It's a collection of free ancestry resources and how to use them. My wife convinced me to put this website together. I kept getting questions from people who knew I was doing ancestry research. They wanted to know where to go to get information about their ancestry. So I put this website together: http://sites.google.com/site/FunSimpleFreeAncestry It contains a lot of links to websites that are already in many of the GenWeb County websites. I just put them all together with examples of how to use them. I've been tracking the hits on each page and have removed a couple and added some. I think I have the right balance now. At least people seem to be looking at all of the pages on the website. Please feel free to pass this email onto anyone or any group that may find it useful. Thanks, Dan Smith
I joined the "Sons of the American Revolution" (SAR) using William Taylor as my patriot ancestor. He is my 4th ggf. I used SAR documentation of another cousin to prove my descent from William. I was planning to use my approved SAR application to obtain membership in the "Daughters of the American Revolution" (DAR) for my daughter. However, I've learned that DAR does not accept SAR documentation. Therefore, we have to prove descent from William to my daughter. William's descendants moved to Barbour County prior to the "War of Northern Aggression. William's son Mathias Clarke Taylor and Mathias's son Thomas Taylor died and are buried in Barbour County. I descended from Thomas's son Edward Monroe Taylor. Are there any DAR members of William Taylor descent that would be willing to share their DAR documentation? Most likely it would be easier to prove to a relationship to a recent DAR member. Rex Yance [email protected]
I am the registrar to the Eufaula,Alabama Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Information on your ancestor can be obtained by calling Washington DC DAR headquarters. 1-202-879-3217 tell whom ever answers the phone what your looking for. The DAR person will look up your ancestor and you can purchase the correct record to use as evidence for your daughters papers.
