    1. [ALBARBOU] 1833 or 1838 census
    2. Jim and Terri Tait
    3. List, Helen Foley published what she calls the 1833 census of Barbour County, AL. Marie Godfrey transcribed what she called the 1838 Barbour County census, and had the original and the transcription microfilmed. This microfilm is located at Samford University, Birmingham, AL. I printed out a copy while I was there. If you look at the 1833 and 1838, they are virtually identical - names, order of names, number of children, slaves, etc. There seem to be only slight differences in the interpretation of the names. Not so long ago, a kind distant relative sent me a copy of the daybook/journal of Charles LONG, an early Barbour resident. In this journal, Charles listed his children and their birthdates. Charles LONG's first child was not born until 1833, so I do not think there is any way that the three children listed in the "1833" could be correct. Based on the information, I tend to think that the 1833 Foley census is really the 1838 census, and that Mrs. Godfrey was correct. I did contact the AL Archives to see if they had any information, but they did not seem to be able to answer the question. Has anyone noticed that the number of children/ages seems to be "off" for their early Barbour ancestor in the 1833 Foley census? Is the 1833 Foley census really the 1838 Godfrey? I might add that I am indebted to both Mrs. Foley and Mrs. Godfrey for their wonderful contributions to Barbour genealogy. I would just like to know if the census is really 1833 or 1838. Thanks, Terri

    3. Terri, That Young Soldier could be from new Co A, 5th Ala Inf; Co K of the 5th was made-up of men from Barbour and under the Conscript Act of April 1862 it became new Co A; although not shown at Natl, James W. Young was also in Co K; a machinest from NY, enl at age 25; Co K also contained a number of younger soldiers; the youngest I found was Benjamin H. Brooks at age 13, and many 14, 15 and 16 year olds; Louis Chitwood who later became Co Cdr, was probably about 19 or 20 when promoted to Capt; these young folks did us all proud w/ Genl Lee's Army of Northern Va; of the more than 1200 who served with the rgt during the course of the war, only 62 remained to be paroled at Appomattox in Apr 1865.
