    1. Re: [ALBARBOU] Alabama newspapers
    2. Does anyone know if their was a newspaper in the Blue Springs, Clio, area about 1881-1886 that would list obits and accidents? I am searching for the death obit for Jane (Hagler) Booth, d. about 1881-1886. I am searching for the death of James Robert Booth, b. 1886. Died from fall off wagon when the horses ran over him. I have been told that he was about 16 yrs oldand I have been told he was about 2yrs old, but he was born in 1886 and is not on the 1900 census. I tend to go with his being 2 yrs old. Therefore I need to find a newspaper for about 1888. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Doris

    1. [ALBARBOU] Clark reunion
    2. >From The Eufaula Tribune, 20 august 2000, weekend edition. Reported by Ann Smith. ================================ Clark reunion The descendants of John Bascom Clark gathered Aug. 5 for a family reunion at the Eufaula Community Center. Hosts and hostesses were JoAnn Clark Sanders, Annie Eula Clark Sellers, Sarah Lee Nolin Baker, all of Eufaula, and Patsy Ann Clark Gardner of Columbus, Ga. About 150 people attended, spanning four generations. A highlight was seeing a Clark family genealogy book spanning 188 years (1818-2000). The four hostesses researched archives for months, gathering information from Eufaula and Ozark to compile the book. Members came from as far away as Miami and Beaver Creek, Ohio. Clark Sanders commented that the community center was a great place for the event, and said the staff was very helpful and considerate. ================================================ Richard Price SOS 6-3

    1. [ALBARBOU] Tribune editorial
    2. The following article appeared on the editorial page of the Eufaula Tribune, in the 20 August 2000 weekend edition. It was written by Joel P. Smith. ========================================= "Excited voter elected Dr. Thornton town's first mayor" With the mayoral election only days away, a yellow clipping in Mrs. George N. Hurt's fragile scrapbook gives an interesting and timely account of the election of Eufaula's first mayor, 143 years ago. Eufaula was incorporated by an act of the Alabama Legislature on Dec. 19, 1857, with the stipulation that "the city governing body of the City Council of Eufaula shall consist of a chief officer to be styled 'the Mayor of Eufaula' and common councilmen." the first election was held under Intendant Ramson Godwin's and council member's supervision. Eufaula's excited voters chose Dr. William H. Thornton as their first mayor. That old clipping of an article written by Anne Kendrick Walker, author of "Backtracking in Barbour County," recaptures the town's excitement when townspeople chose Eufaula's "most prominent and popular and honored physician" as their first mayor. "A group[ of dust-covered horsemen galloped out of Eufaula one day with a message which, at that time, had all the importance of a Paul Revere mission, all the 'flourishes' that we associate with the ride to Concorde and Lexington, all the 'dash.' For Eufaula did things picturesquely; the men rode well, body-servants went along as outriders, a gay cavalcade it was drew rein at last, not at an officer's headquarters or an inn, where public men were wont to gather, or either before some white doorway of an old home. "This particular cavalcade went forth to meet one of the town's citizens, who was returning from a call which he had made on one of his patients. There had been an election that day in town-Eufaula had elected the first mayor in her history. Unanimous choice had fallen to a young physician, Dr. William Horatio Thornton, and the town could not await his return to inform him of the result of the day's voting. "And so before dusk fell, the ballots were counted, lights were set out in the windows of the houses, preparations made for bonfires and, meanwhile, a cavalcade was formed and rode through the street on a mission which could not be delayed." The riders galloped through the dust and drew rein suddenly and saluted the man of the hour.. Dr. Thornton had married Mary Butler Shorter, a daughter of Gen. Reuben Clark Shorter. The wedding had taken place in the general's palatial house on the bluff in 1845. The bride and groom built their home on Randolph Street. It's now know as the Thornton-Comer-Rudderman House. The fascinating old scrapbook includes another article on the Dent Mansion (Fendall Hall) by Miss Anne Walker that is also timely. She tells "the romantic story" of how Edward Brown and Ann Fendall Beall Young's second daughter, Anna Beall Young, was "courted by a princely gentleman whose name she was soon to bear - Hubert S. Dent." They courted in the detached brick kitchen which was being used as a 'parlor' until the manor house was completed. Today, the Friends of Fendall Hall are assisting the Alabama Historical Commission in developing a plan for a reconstruction of that detached kitchen which was destroyed by a falling tree during a storm. =============================================== Richard Price SOS 6-3

    1. [ALBARBOU] New Cemetery
    2. As reported in the Eufaula Tribune, 20 August 2000, the Barbour County Commission approved a request from the Center Ridge Missionary Baptist Church for a cemetery to be located on County Rd. 25. This is located near Mt. Andrew. Since there is already a cemetery at the church, I am assuming that they are adding an annex because of space considerations. Richard SOS 6-3

    2. I am looking for information on the outfit that Joseph J. Floyd was in during the Civil War. He was the son of Theophilus Floyd Sr. and was born Nov. 7, 1835, died July 31, 1862 at the Battle of Richmond. He married Sarah Butts on Dec. 17, 1856. After he died, she married Abner Pickett. I always thought maybe Joseph was in the 39th as was his brother, Theophilus Jr. but they were at Chickamauga. Thanks! JONI

    3. Debbie, Rgt History refers to him as A. Jason Cook, b.1837 in Stewart County, Ga; enlisted Mar 15, 1862 at Clayton as Pvt, Co K, 29th Ala; his record seems to be pretty well scrambled in that one report shows him dischaged due to rheumatism and another shows that he d. at Fairground Hospital #2 at Atlanta Jun 24, 1864; the Sexton's List indicates he is buried in Block E, Row 3, Space #13 in Confederate Section at Oakland Cemetery; in view of that, the latter story would seem to be correct; listed at Natl Archves as A.J. Cook, so no help on him being Andrew Jackson Cook there either; if it will help, George Perry Cook and Thomas J. Cook, Jr of Barbour were also in Co K; Thomas was also born in Stewart County in 1837 and George lived at Star Hill following the war; from comparing the records of A.J. and Thomas, looks like their records may have gotten tangled together as I see 1837 and rheumatism in both w/ dates of being wounded somewhat too close. Hope I have not muddied the water; and I can be of further assistance, please advise. Deo Vindice, Homer

    3. Would love to hear from anyone with info on my ancestor Elias Magruder; information on him is as follows: Elias Magruder was probably living in the Barbour County area around 1850. By 1860 he had moved to Henry County and he is listed in the Henry County 1860 census as born in Maryland abt. 1805; wife Martha born in Georgia. Occupation listed as an "Overseer". He probably was Overseer for his cousin Dr. James T. Magruder's holdings in the Barbour County; the latter lived across the river in Georgia near Georgetown. He was father of my ggm Arbanrion Magruder (b. 1839, married John L. Armstrong in Clay County, Ga. in 1861).
