Is anyone on this list researching the TOWNSEND surname? Jesse Lynch Lynn and myself are descendants of John THOMAS, Rev. Soldier who died in Autauga County, Al in 1840. Jesse and I have been swapping information and in my prior research he found the clue necessary to determine that the Eleanor, wife of Elnathan Stephens listed in John THOMAS's will is the same Eleanor THOMAS who married Thomas TOWNSEND in Hancock County, GA in 1815. Here is the first generation information that we have been able to gather. Descendants of Thomas Townsend Generation No. 1 1. Thomas1 Townsend died Abt. 1830. He married Eleanor Thomas January 21, 1815 in Hancock County, Georgia, daughter of John Thomas and Prudence ?. She was born Abt. 1797 in Virginia. A true copy, J. B. MATHEWS, Clerk." Notes for Eleanor Thomas: They were living in Pike County, Alabama when the will of John Thomas was in probate in September 1846. In Hancock County, Georgia, on Jan. 21, 1815 there is the marriage record of THOMAS TOWNSEND and ELENOR THOMAS. Information from Jesse Lynch Lynn, Jr. , [email protected] on July 8, 2003 Fourth, I have some new thoughts on John THOMAS's children that you may find interesting. John L. THOMAS, Nancy THOMAS, and Sarah THOMAS appear to have been pretty thoroughly researched, either by you or various LINCH/LYNCH researchers. Since these three seem well documented, I have done some work on the other sisters. I think it will prove very difficult to pinpoint those who lived out of Alabama. However, I think I have made some real progress on two others: Eleanor and Mary. The key to Eleanor was your information of a Eleanor THOMAS- Thomas TOWNSEND marriage in Hancock County. I am now confident that this did apply to John THOMAS's daughter. Searching the Autauga County Genealogy webpages, I have found a record of a marriage between Elnathan STEVENS (sic) and Elivia (sic) TOWNSEND on 12 Oct 1839, book 1, p 55. I am sure that this is John THOMAS's daughter and I am sure that "Elivia" is an error in transcription. Also, an Elthan STEVANS appears in the 1840 Autauga Census, p 31A, with one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. There were no other family members, as one would expect if they were married in October 1839. Also, there are an extensive amount of Estate Records for the Estate of a Thomas TOWNSEND in Autauga County, beginning in 1830, suggesting that Thomas TOWNSEND died that year. From the indexes, it appears there were several children. Also, interestingly, there is an 1860 Autauga County deed from Elnathan STEPHENS to Mary TOWNSEND, et. al. I have ordered some of the estate papers, and will let you know what turns up. From the Autauga County Internet site, Autauga County, Alabama Index to Orphans Court Records, compiled by Larry W.
