In response to your query concerning Zachariah Pope Gordon and Mary O. Montgomery Gordon. Zachariah Pope b. 1787 in Fairfield Co, SC (the son of Lewis and Jemima Jones Pope)and Arrena/Irene Hill (daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Rogers Hill) married 15 Aug 1813 in Jones County, GA. They had one child, Amanda Hill Pope (b. 1816 in Jones County ,GA and died in 1862 in Autauga County, AL). It is not known if Irene died in Jones County or after Zachariah moved to Autauga County. He remarried and had several children. He was a large plantation owner and helped with the development of Autauga County. His plantation was located in the bend of the Alabama River in Autauga County. Amanda Hill Pope married James Madison Gordon (b. ca 1817 in NC and d. 8 May 1861 in Autauga County) They had two children: Jane Irene Gordon and Zachariah Pope Gordon. Jane Irene first married Andrew Jackson Merritt son of John and Martha Emily Durden of Autauga Co. They had one child: Nettie Gordon Merritt who was born ca 1861. Andrew "Jack" Merritt died 14 May 1862 in Camp Butler, Illinois. Irene Gordon Merritt then married William Montgomery on 16 Dec 1863 in Autauga County, AL. They had eight children. Zachariah Pope Gordon was b. 7 Oct 1844 in Autauga Co, AL. He died 3 Sept 1911 and is buried in the Oakhill Cemetery in Prattville, AL. He married Mary O. Montgomery who was the daughter of William and Anne Burrows (daughter of Alvin and Aurilla Toms Burrows of Winfield, NY). They had four children including Minnie A; Algernon Pope; Montgomery; and Annie Iola. The O. in Mary O. Montgomery's name remains a mystery but it might have been Orrisaville as Mary's mother had a sister named Orrisaville who died fairlyyoung but after she married and had children. Algernon Pope Gordon was b. 30 Jan 1870 and d. 12 Jan 1951 at Montgomery, AL is buried in Memorial Cemetery. He was licensed as a railroad brakeman early on but throughout almost all his working life he ran a dairy farm in Montgomery, AL.(probably the Hope Hull you are talking about as it is beautiful cattle country right outside Montgomery) He and Adella Virginia Collins Gordon had 6 children. Hope this helps. If more detailed information is desired contact me at Fallonfox@aol.com By Kay Smith Gibbs, a descendant of Thomas and Rebecca Hill and William Montgomery.
