    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] Martin & Lewis Johnson from Georgia
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/pR.2ADE/820 Message Board Post: Searching for brothers Martin Johnson and James Lewis Johnson. James Lewis Johnson moved to AL in the early 1840's. Martin Johnson moved to Autauga AL in about 1857. There is a story that Martin Johnson was killed over a land dispute. We are trying to learn the truth about this story. His brother James Lewis Johnson may have been involved to some degree. It would have happened between 1860 census the families are present, but in late 1860's the younger children returned to Crawford Co., GA to their mothers family. In the 1870 Census the children are present in GA. Martin Johnson married Nancy Bryant in Bibb Co., GA. Martin and Nancy died in Autauga, we read that their graves are unmarked. Lewis Johnson married Mary Ann Porter in Hancock Co., GA. James Lewis and Mary Johnson died in New Hope, AL. Any assistance with this family story would be greatly appreciated.

    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] James Walter Smith and Margaret Frances Houston
    2. smithiras
    3. James Walter Smith 12 March 1839 23 May 1914 Margaret Frances Smith 14 June 1845 28 July 1880 They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Prattville. He was a private in the 38th Ala Infantry Volunteers, captured near Nashville, imprisoned in Camp Chase, Ohio. He is my husband's great-grandfather. His son Arthur Francis Smith Sr. was born in Prattville, moved to Mobile, married Sadie McCrum. Their son, Arthur Francis Smith Jr. married Lucille Tyler. My husband is their son, Arthur Francis Smith III. According to his Children of the Confederacy application in 1945 his great-grandmother was Margaret Frances Houston. She died shortly after Arthur Sr. was born. His birthdate was July 8, 1880 and I found a notice of the death of Mrs James Smith in Death and Marriage Notices from Autauga County, Alabama Newspapers 1853-1889 by Larry E. Caver, Jr. The date coincided with the date of death on the tombstone. They had an older son, Harvey, who lived in Mobile but my husband doesn't remember him. If there were other children I haven't found them. If there are any relatives left in Prattville I hope to fill in some blanks on this couple. I have been unable to find James and Margaret in the Autauga County census for 1880 or James in later censuses after her death. I think I have found them both with their families in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. The ages and names coincide. If I have the right family, James is the son of William A. and Rebecca Smith. His siblings were Sarah, Thomas, Gains, William, George, Elizabeth and John. Sarah and Thomas are the same age and could be twins. Arthur Jr. was a twin. Twins running in families sometimes skip a generation. This from the 1850 census and next door is a Singleton Smith age 25 and would be the oldest if he is their child, also. He has babies John, and William. In 1860 Rebecca is the head of household and James and some of the others are still living with her. In 1850 Margarett F. Houston is listed with Rachael Houston and apparent siblings William, Mary E. Martha J, Thomas J., Clementina. No male head of household. In 1860 Margaret is with R. Houston and W. D., Mary, and Thomas and no male head of household. The ages for Margaret and James in the censuses each year work with their birthdates. If these are correct then who was Margaret's father and when did he die? Also, I have not found a marriage date for James and Margaret. If any of this ties in with anyone's research in Autauga County I would like to hear from them. I would appreciate information on where best to start my search when I come to Prattville sometime next month. I plan on going to the cemetery first to see the graves. I have a map that they sent me from City Hall. Where would be the best place to start? The court house, library, or other sources there? Thanks for any help. Iras Fearn Smith Mobile

Chilton is made up from Autauga, Perry, Shelby and Bibb counties. At one time it was Baker County. Chilton was created in 1868 and the name change from Baker was in 1874. Elmore was created in 1866 from Autauga, Montgomery,Coosa and Tallapoosa counties. Coosa was created in 1832. [ Creek Cession] . They moved the county lines so often it is wise to always search Autauga, Chilton, Coosa and Elmore when looking for People on the census. With Probate records the folks in the Probate offices have been really great about what year that county line moved. My ancestors were in what is today where the four corners of these four counties meet. With a radius down to Wetumpka over to Rockford and to Marbury. Lightwood is where I call home. Hope this helps. candi

They were not listed in any census I can find. If I know a little history, it would help. When you get a chance, please stop by my forum and read all the Alabama genealogy and post your queries for your Alabama ancestors. There are thousands of Alabama SURNAMES listed, so please look through to see if your "cousins" have been there and posted to you. If you want to post your own queries, you need to register first (it's free); but you can read through the other queries without registering: http://forums.about.com/ab-huntsville//messages?lgnF=y&msg=463.1 Please take a moment to browse through them and check the surnames--you might find a long lost cousin or two! You have to register before you can post. Look at the very very bottom of the page on the far right side (under the other posts/messages) and see if you're in basic or advance view. In basic, you will see at the TOP of the LEFT side where it says "start new discussion". In the Advance view, it says "post new" at the top of the left side in two places (at the very top and just under the GENEALOGY title in gray. Good luck in your searches! I know one that lists many (not all) in Chilton County. I know that the ALGenWeb pages for some counties will point you to lists of cemeteries. I also know that some cemetery transcriptions are available at the USGenWeb archives, along with many other documents. But one resource that I find quite useful for finding cemeteries is a book I bought from the University of Alabama's Cartographic Research Lab. Visit <http://www.as.ua.edu/geography/cart_lab/publications/index.html> and look at what they offer. In particular, look at something by the name of "Historical Atlas of Alabama Volume II: Cemetery Locations by County". You can purchase it for as few or as many counties as you wish. I bought it for 11 counties and now wish I'd gone ahead and gotten all of them. There's a PDF you can download there which shows what kind of information is available. You'll need to understand that the information there is not 100% accurate in all cases. I've got pretty good info, for instance, about one cemetery in Elmore County that I'm trying to find which indicates that it's perhaps not exactly where they list it. On the other hand, their information says that its precise location isn't known, so I can't hold that against them. There may be cemeteries not included -- and there are some whose locations may vary slightly. But all in all, it's been a fabulous resource for at least locating candidate cemeteries in my searches in nearby counties where my ancestors lived -- which include most of the counties you named. I didn't purchase Blount or Montgomery Counties, but I'd be happy to offer some small assistance with the others. = Steve = -- Steve W. Are there cemeteried also in >Independence? >I'm lookinf for members of the FLEMING, STEWART, and GRIER families. >Thanks in advance for your help! >Alice Fleming Campbell Alice, I may be able to offer a little help here. To begin with, go here for a reference map: <http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/counties/autauga.jpg>. From there, here's what I know: Independence Church is listed at T18N-R13E-S12. Looking at that map, you'll see Independence. A bit north of it, you'll see a road that has first one then another road leading off to the west. The Independence Church is shown on my map as being near the top end of the first of those. I haven't been to the area, but my map shows nearly a dozen cemeteries within a 5 mile radius of Independence itself. Kingston is at T19N-R15E-S22. On that reference map, going directly north on the road from Poseys Crossroads, it's pretty close to the south corner of the intersection of that first road you see to the west. There's another cemetery indicated on the opposite side of that intersection, which is Wilson. If you don't already, you should keep a bookmark (favorite, whatever you prefer to call it) to the RootsWeb site where a lot of files are available. For Alabama, it's <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/>, where you can then look through various counties and categories. You may also find the Autauga County GenWeb page at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~alautaug/> useful. None of the surnames you mention are listed in my source in regard to those cemeteries, which doesn't really mean anything. But I'd be interested in talking about Grier families with you. You'll note my signature has Grier -- my Great Grandmother was Emma Lue Grier before she married Archie Green Jackson. And there are numerous Griers I have some small knowledge of in Elmore County. = Steve = -- Steve W. Many times mothers gave their sons their maiden names. I am stuck on my g-great grandfather, Robert Lumpkin Martin who came to Equality, Ala in Coosa Co, supposedly as an "orphan" with an "aunt" and who married Elizabeth Robbins (d/o Solomon) in March, 1836 - the first marriage recorded in that county. I believe he was born in Oglethorpe County, GA in 1813. I also think that his mother could have been a Lumpkin because of his middle name. I know this is a long shot, but it never hurts to try.
