Anyone out there with info on the Gray family of Autauga Co. from the earliest, George--1818 to present day. George died there in 1830 but left many descendants and I am trying to put these families together. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Brenda Gray Felder
I can't answer your question, but I would like to make a comment. B.F. Miles rented the ground floor of the Methodist Church Sunday School (which was located on the second, top floor) in a building built by Daniel Pratt. The building was adjacent to the Pratt Gin Company. Miles operated a retail mercantile busubess. The store space was rented to help the Methodists with the upkeep of the building. Does anyone on the list have other information which supports and/or complements this? Hi Irma, I was interested in your MILES query.I have a William A MILES in Autauga County, AL whose young son, Noah MILES was born 1855 (tombstone in Oak Hill Cemetery) and died shortly after. This William married Julia Marie ROBINSON (sister of my direct ancestor E P ROBINSON) in AL. Julia was born in 1823. Could he have been a brother to your Benjamin Franklin MILES? I haven't been able to find any information on him in AL. Perhaps he moved to TX. Have you any information on William A MILES? Thanks-Sorry I can't help you in your quest. I has seen several references to Revolutionary War veterans who settled in Autagua County. The Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution has undertaken a project to locate and document the graves of as many Revolutionary War Veterans as possible within our state. While there is considerable information published about these grave sites, most are listed as to Section, Range and Township. This project involves the plotting of the grave sites via GPS with the development of county maps with this information, along with the cemeteries within the county. This is an extremely long term project but some four counties have already been completed. I would like to hear from anyone who has information on such graves along with any war of 1812 veterans, as these to will also be plotted. John R. Can anyone on this list give me a reference that would support the supposition that the father of Benjamin Franklin MILES, born August 11, 1813; died July 21, 1864; buried in MILES Cemetery, Lawsonville Community, Rusk County, Texas is Abraham MILES from Pike County, Alabama. Benjamin Franklin MILES married in Autauga County, May 6, 1847 to Sarah Albertine TATUM. They had a son, Albert B. MILES, M. D. whose tombstone in the same cemetery as Benjamin F. MILES states that he was born in Prattville, AL He was a noted surgeon who practiced at Tulane University, in Louisiana. Does anyone know what tribes were living in Autauga Co. in the 1840's. Guess it may be impossible to know as they assimilated into the white community after the removal. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
Hey Dave, That was very interesting. I am white and I agree with you, you are right, there is a lot of interesting facts about Autauga Genealogy. I have met several people who were descended from old Autauga Co. families and I have heard a lot of stories of how in one family or family line there are Black, White, and Native Americans in it, or a mixture of all of the above. I think that a heap of old time Southern White families have a lot of Native American and Black blood in them and don't evenn know it. You can see it in some of them. By the way, I think those relatives of yours that are very light complected and have nothing to do with their grandmother are sorry for being that way. They migrated from S.C. to Autauga Co., Alabama in 1822 and lived and died in or near the Joffre community not far from Old Kingston. William was born in 1759 in Richland Co. S.C., fought in Rev. War; under Gen Moultry in 1776, and in May, 1777 was in Capt. Holly Risbey's company, Col. Sumter's Regt.. He later served in S. C. Militia. He migrated to Autauga Co., Alabama in 1822. Lived his last years and died there in the Joffre community in 1836. He was suposedly a wagon maker. His spouse is unknown at this time. His son Lewis Rawlinson was born in 1799 in Richland Dist., S.C. and died on 10/5/1855 in Autauga Co., Ala. According to Harry Rawlinson's book, Lewis was probably a wagon maker, farmer, and sawmill man(Lumberman). Lewis' first wife was (?) RISOR, D. 1834 -'35 and his second wife was Sarah Grant Chambliss. Sarah's maiden name was Grant, being the widow of a Mr. Chambliss. They both had children that married into families around that area such as the Risors, Grants, Carters, Golsons, etc., and some were buried in those families' old family cemeteries in that area. For example one of Lewis' sons, James B. Rawlinson, is buried in the old Carter family cemetery. I was wondering if anyone knows where William and Lewis might have been buried, either singulary or in some family graveyard somewhere out in that area of Autauga County. I have checked the old DeRamus Cemetery and Lewis' son John Lewis Rawlinson is buried there, but not his dad and granddad mentioned above. Any help or info on this would be greatly appreciated.
