    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] PIERCE & PRATT (1868)
    2. Below are a couple of "tidbits" from the Daily State Sentinel, which was a Radical Reconstruction newspaper operated in Montgomery after the Civil War. As you can tell the opinions of the editor of this paper was in direct contrast with many of the Southern people around him. Major B.W. PIERCE, long ago a citizen of Autauga County, but for many years past a citizen of Louisiana, has a long communication in the last Autauga Citizen, urging emigration to British Honduras. To those who are dissatified with this country and government, we advise them to communicate with Major PIERCE, and to emigrate at once to British Honduras (Daily State Sentinel, February, 15, 1868) Daniel PRATT, it is said, turned off (fired) all the freedmen in his employ, who went to Kingston and voted for the constitution. It will soon be the case that this same Daniel PRATT will want the labor of these freedmen worse than they now want employment from him (Daily State Sentinel, February 13, 1868)

    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] Records Searches - FOIA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: FOIA Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/pR.2ADE/847 Message Board Post: Dear fellow researchers: In my professional work I use the FOIA to acquire records from all areas. While you cannot just send in a generic "find this" request, using the proper request the proper forms and properly worded legal letter will result in the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages the first time and two weeks later received an additional 124 pages of documentation. It was a godsend! I will spell this out exactly to anyone who wishes direction and send you the form, the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. This is what the Freedom of Information Act is for! But you have to know how and where to use it. The FOIA is available for use in any state for any public record. It does not, not replace the researcher, but for those of us who have been unable to physically get to an out of town location or to contact an active researcher it's great. As a result of my request! I have my gggrandfather's entire household inventory down to every single knife and fork, I have his entire office contents down to the list of law books and furniture he owned, I have the guardianship papers for all of my ggrand uncles and aunts, I have a (long) list of people that owed him money for mortgages he held and how much, when they were due - it was like a treasure chest. I know how much he paid for a loaf of bread, how much of an allowance the Estate had my gggrandmother on for the next 5 years! And all because I knew how to ask the right way. Again, this is just one tool. I am preparing a "package" to email those who are interested. My email is [email protected] The response has been rather large, it's going to take me a few days, possible until the weekend. I am requesting a donation of $5 per person requesting the package. I will send the package first work on the honor system for the $5.00. I will be glad to help anyone with any additional inform! ation or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. for free. This is just taking me a LOT of time. I will email all the details with the forms, etc. In the meantime, start searching for as many specifics as you can get. This is not "send me the death certificate of...." This is "I searched the probate database for (county) and found that my ggrandfather's estate is in your records. It is between the years XXXX and XXXX. The case number is listed as ________" Then there is more legal lingo, etc. etc.. Anyway, I am sorry this post is so long, I will be sending this out to all interested sometime this week or weekend. Also, please advise anyone else you think may be interested in this information in other lists. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler

    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] Oak Hill Cemetery Survey Reminder
    2. Just a reminder to those of you who are serving on the Autauga Cemetery Survey Project- we are scheduled to start a survey of Oak Hill Cemetery here in Prattville tomorrow (Veteran's Day). There has been concern about whether we would be able to start the survey tomorrow due to the weather. However, we have had no "bad" weather here yet. We plan to go ahead as scheduled and will stop the survey if bad weather prevails. I will be at the entrance near the railroad tracks on Wetumpka Street between 8:00 -9:00 a.m. We welcome any of you who can come and help us with this project. Bring a snack and your favorite beverage if we get to stay for the day. Also, we still need volunteers to start typing the surveys for the book. If you are able to type in Microsoft Excel and have some free time to help, let me know. We will have the box of surveys at our monthly meeting (November 17) at the Prattville Library. Larry E. Caver, Jr.

Are there copies available for research, if so, where would these be found?
