Jonathan T McCrary (b 1841 d. 1896, Autauga Co) was a teacher before and after the Civil War and during the war served in G company of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Because he was a young teacher before the war and sergeant (and for a long stretch, ranking member of his company) in a unit attached to the Army of Northern Virginia under Stonewall Jackson, I would think it is likely that he wrote about the experience. And especially since I was able to find accounts of the war written by many of his comrades in A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry by Gregory C. White. There are many other descendants of Jonathan McCrary in the area so I guess it is worth a shot asking if anyone knows if any of his letters or writings exist? The cemetery is located on the left side of the road across from the Shiloh Church Road. The cemetery is surrounded by an iron fence and has a concrete walkway from the gate through the center. Surveyed by Honey Lanham Dodge, 9 March 2002. This cemetery was partially cleared in March 2002 by Honey, Larry Dodge and Mac Clark. Fellow "patrons of the past"- I have been working on "volume II" of the Montgomery Newspaper transcriptions. I came across an item today I just had to share. It is an account of a "double wedding" ceremony in October 1881, sent in by a reader to the editor of the Montgomery Advertiser. At first I thought the account might be from a local "social-lite" lady of Montgomery past, sharing the vivid details of a recent wedding she attended (flowers, wedding dresses, etc). However, as you can see about half-way along, the account goes straight to the FOOD served. The account came from a member of the Montgomery "Drummers". Read and enjoy. Larry E. Caver, Jr. Editor: On the evening of the 5th instant, I had the pleasure of attending one of the most brilliant and novel ceremonies, in the way of a wedding, that it was ever my pleasure to witness. The contracting parties were the Misses Eugenia and Georgia KEY, twin sisters, daughters of Mrs. Sarah KEY, of Boromville, Alabama, and Messrs. Ira MITCHELL and John D. PUCKET, uncle and nephew, one living in Opelika, the other near Columbus, Georgia. The double ceremony was performed at the same time, and was one of the briefest but most impressive I ever listened to, by Reverend Mr. LIVELY, of the "Hard Shell" faith… (Later) The supper was splendid. The tables seemed almost to groan under the weight of good things, and as fast as my plate was empty, Mrs. KEY had it supplied again… I did my best to represent Montgomery's champion eaters, and especially the fraternity of drummers. I know some drummers would have envied my position, at the end of that table, where were set roast duck, turkey, pig, kid, mutton, etc., with cakes, syllabub, goblets large and filled and refilled every time they were emptied. Politeness only, and the fact of my not being a regularly invited guest, induced me to leave that inviting table. I imagined that I was eating more like a tramp than a drummer, and perhaps did… I wish I could witness just such a wedding, and help to enjoy such a supper, every Wednesday for the balance of the year! -Submitted by "J.M.C." They were married in Barbour County, Sep 18, 1851. Narcissa died Jan 2, 1880. Does anyone have more information about this map? I was just looking at this map on the genweb site for Autauga Co. It is dated 1830 but has lots marked for E. J. Zeigler, M. Davids, and W. T. Hall. These names would place it about 1844-1845. Perhaps it was drawn in 1830, and the names were added as the lots were purchased??? Edward Jefferson Zeigler was born about 1822 in SC. He married in Autauga Co in 1844. He is the only E. J. Zeigler I know of in Autauga. His mother Milley Zeigler married Henry P David about 1843. They separated soon after. Anyway, E. J. Zeigler has 2 lots on the SW corner of Tyus and Pickett Streets. M. Davids (Milley? David?) has 2 lots on the NW corner of Company and Washington Streets. W. T. Hall has one lot on the NW corner of Houser and Autauga Streets. However, his name may have been marked out and the name T. Nunn is above. Honey Lanham Dodge

I have at least SOME information for you. First of all, James Willis Keenum is my great-uncle. I think he was the eldest of the family and my grandmother (Hazel Keenum Hedgcoth, 1910-1984) was the youngest of the bunch. (I think the family had about 10 kids or so altogether.) I think my grandma even had some pictures of your grandpa's family (I'd have to check when I get back home; I'm on a business trip at the moment). I do have a beautiful family portrait of the Keenums (our great-grandfather's family) taken around the turn of the century. They were really a beautiful family. We can scan a copy and send it to you if you'd like. I don't think your grandfather is in the picture since he was older and probably wasn't living at home anymore. I knew several of your grandfather's younger siblings before they died: Aunt Pat, Uncle George, Aunt Becky, Aunt Ethel. I think those were all I met. I have all of the family's names, kids names, etc. (from my grandmother's recollection before she died). The other siblings (as I recall) were Ada, Nancy, Carl. Two of the kids (Bethel and Elizabeth) died when they were still kids. Your great-grandparents were named James (or John?) W. Keenum and Dollie Frances Osborn. I think both of them were born in Alabama (Tuscumbia?) around 1870 or so (again, I don't have their exact birth dates on me, but I can get them for you). I'm still researching them, so I can't give you absolutely certain information yet. However, I have found Dollie's parents on the census in Alabama. Her father's name was John J. Osborn and her mother was Arlee (?) Osborn. I remember my grandma saying that her grandmother's name was Arlee, so I'm confident that this is the correct family. One other thing you may or may not know... Our great-grandfather had a sister named Molly (or "Mollie"?) Keenum Bryant. I think she was a widow and lived with the family for quite some time. I think my grandma said her husband had been a preacher or missionary. I noticed in one of the later censuses in Texas that it looked like Molly was living with your grandfather's family at one point. When the Keenums came from Alabama to Texas, they settled in Longview, Gregg County in East Texas. I think some of the older children stayed there (like your grandfather I think) while the parents and the younger children moved to the city of Fort Worth in the 1920s or so. One anecdote that my grandma told me regarding your father was that, when she came to his cotton farm to visit, he didn't like her to help pick cotton. When I asked why he didn't like her to help pick cotton, she replied, "Because I'd pick just enough to sit on." I'd love to find out what you know about the Keenums and swap information, pictures, etc. We have a small family reunion every year that you may be interested in (comprised of Becky's descendants and my grandmother's). My email is [email protected] or feel free to call anytime at 817 239 6774. Is your family still in Texas? Thanks. Todd

There is a FREE publication put out by the U. S. Government Printing Office called "A Citizens Guide to Using The Fredom Of Information Act and The Privacy Act of 1974 to Request Government Records/Documents" - all you have to do is request one sent to you - it tells what agencies/records you can obtain and also sample letters you can just write - and how to address the envelope to insure that the FOIA Officer of any agency gets the request - the waiting period will vary as to what records you want and they have the option to charge you for copying, you can request the fee be waived - the "United States Government Manual" is also sold by the Superintendent of Documents of the U. S. Government Printing Office - this tells you which governmental office you go to for what records and the FOIA Officer of that agency - every library should have this in their library and you would not have to purchase one - there is NO central government records office that servoces FOIA requests. delilah evans At 19:12 11/28/02 -0700, [email protected] wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/pR.2ADE/853 > >Message Board Post: > > Hi fellow genealogists!
