    3. For those of you who have an interest in Florida research, did you know that Gov. Jeb Bush has proposed closing the Florida State Library System? Please become aware of these issues and make your concerns known. The first link will get you up to speed and the second is an online petition. You do not have to be a Florida resident to sign, as far as I know. 1. Re: [ALAUTAUG-L] Milton, Alabama
    2. There is some Milton history, written by the late Geni Cory, in Prattville, Alabama, at the historical society. The monuments actually mark the spots where William L. Taylor and his wife Sarah and their son Thos. J. were buried in the 1860's and 1870's, along with a son of Thomas's, Preston Taylor, who accidentally shot himself in the 1880s. The property belonged for many years to the Reed family (and might still) and is on Little Mulberry Creek. The Reeds had been told by generations of Taylors that their family was buried there, although no markers remained after the flooding of Milton and surrounding area about 1886. Because Thomas' J. Taylor's widow (Emma Bates Taylor) had several children who died young, it was assumed by Miss Cory that maybe some Bateses were buried there also, although there is no proof. A monument was dedicated in May 1980 (see Selma Times Journal of 2 May 1980), and then a historical marker was placed in 1982 (see Montgomery Advertiser Journal, 9 May 1982). Elihu Bates and Elizaeth Parr Bates, along with their daughter Emma Bates Taylor Bishop, who died in the 1920s, and some others, are buried at Harmony Cemetery; the Bateses attended Harmony Church, long gone. Hope this helps. I was involved in a lot of this in the 1970s and 1980s, visiting the site, etc. Are you a descendant of Emma Bates Taylor Bishop? Joe Hammer

I would like to know about a granite monument erected in May of 1982 in memory of the Bishop family. Was there a newpaper write-up that anyone would share? This monument is near an historic marker for the town of Milton. I understand that the original grave- sites for the Bishops were plowed under circa 1920. I would really like to have a photo of the Bishop marker and a write-up. Also any local history concerning this family. Some of the other Bishops are buried in the Harmony Cemetery and another Bishop Cemetery located ? Any help will be greatly appreciated. You know what a brick wall is like! Ann Davis

    3. Good morning, All, I joined this list this morning and am researching the Luter/Lewter families. In a combined effort with a couple of other researchers, we are researching these families with the goal of up-dating a book on the family that was published back in 1974. If you are a Lewter or have Lewters in your family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. My own branch of the family hails out of Giles/Lincoln Counties of Tn., and Limestone County, Al. Looking forward to meeting new cousins. John
