    2. Hi, Irma, I was not aware that a Rev. soldier named John Thomas lived in Autauga Co. I have been told that a Martha Thomas m. a Rev. soldier, John Owen, who also came to Autauga Co.--probably in 1823. She was younger than her husband. Do you happen to know who John Thomas' children were? Was there a Martha? Would he have had a sister named Martha? Did John Thomas come from SC? Thanks a lot for any info you (or other readers) might have. Virginia Garrison Lexington, KY

    1. [ALAUTAUG-L] Newspaper Transcriptions, Montgomery, Ala., "Volume II"
    2. !!!BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT!!! DEATH, MARRIAGE AND PROBATE NOTICES FROM MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA NEWSPAPERS, Vol. II (1866-1875) This is to inform you about the upcoming release of my latest book, Death, Marriage And Probate Notices From Montgomery, Alabama Newspapers, Volume II (1866-1875). This is the second volume in a continuing series of newspaper transcriptions related to Montgomery, Alabama. The collection picks up where "Volume I" ended. It contains valuable historical and genealogical information on individuals who resided in Central Alabama counties following the Civil War. During the years following the Civil War some local newspapers were not in operation so the Montgomery newspapers became an important source of communication. The collection also contains some valuable information for individuals residing in other parts of the state. This collection is of special interest for anyone doing research in Central Alabama. Montgomery's newspapers devoted a lot of coverage to the surrounding counties in Central Alabama. Information was often included from correspondents and other newspapers in Alabama counties from as far east as the Georgia line and all across Alabama counties in the Black Belt region to the Mississippi line. In some instances this collection may contain valuable reprinted extracts from newspapers that have since been lost from local county records. The book has approximately 440 pages, with soft-binding and includes a detailed index. It contains newspaper transcriptions from surviving issues of: The Daily State Sentinel (1867-68), The Montgomery Daily Advertiser (1866, 1871-74), The Montgomery Weekly Advertiser (1869-70), The Alabama State Journal (1869-70), The Montgomery Weekly Mail (1869), The Montgomery Daily Mail (1870), and The Southern Plantation (1875). The anticipated release date for this book is September 1, 2003. This particular book is being published by myself and not by any publishing company. This will allow me to offer the book for sell at a much lower cost. This book would probably retail between $35-40 from a publishing company. I will be selling the books for $30 per copy plus $4 postage/handling (Total $34 per copy) effective September 1, 2003. However, I am offering a discounted price of $25 per copy (plus $4.00 shipping/handling) for all orders received by August 31, 2003 (Total $29 per copy). As some of you may know, I am not trying to make a profit with my publications. If I make any profit from my publications I try and use the funds to pay for copies, microfilm, etc. associated with new "research projects", as well to help defer some of the costs I incur in traveling to speak to historical and genealogical societies. 3. Is anyone on this list researching the TOWNSEND surname? Jesse Lynch Lynn and myself are descendants of John THOMAS, Rev. Soldier who died in Autauga County, Al in 1840. Jesse and I have been swapping information and in my prior research he found the clue necessary to determine that the Eleanor, wife of Elnathan Stephens listed in John THOMAS's will is the same Eleanor THOMAS who married Thomas TOWNSEND in Hancock County, GA in 1815. Here is the first generation information that we have been able to gather. Descendants of Thomas Townsend Generation No. 1 1. Thomas1 Townsend died Abt. 1830. He married Eleanor Thomas January 21, 1815 in Hancock County, Georgia, daughter of John Thomas and Prudence ?. She was born Abt. 1797 in Virginia. Term, 1829 This day came Thomas TOWNSEND, Administrator of the estate of William LEWIS, deceased, and filed his accounts with the Judge of said Court for final settlement of said estate... A true copy, J. B. MATHEWS, Clerk." Notes for Eleanor Thomas: They were living in Pike County, Alabama when the will of John Thomas was in probate in September 1846. In Hancock County, Georgia, on Jan. 21, 1815 there is the marriage record of THOMAS TOWNSEND and ELENOR THOMAS. Information from Jesse Lynch Lynn, Jr. , [email protected] on July 8, 2003 Fourth, I have some new thoughts on John THOMAS's children that you may find interesting. John L. THOMAS, Nancy THOMAS, and Sarah THOMAS appear to have been pretty thoroughly researched, either by you or various LINCH/LYNCH researchers. Since these three seem well documented, I have done some work on the other sisters. I think it will prove very difficult to pinpoint those who lived out of Alabama. However, I think I have made some real progress on two others: Eleanor and Mary. The key to Eleanor was your information of a Eleanor THOMAS- Thomas TOWNSEND marriage in Hancock County. I am now confident that this did apply to John THOMAS's daughter. Searching the Autauga County Genealogy webpages, I have found a record of a marriage between Elnathan STEVENS (sic) and Elivia (sic) TOWNSEND on 12 Oct 1839, book 1, p 55. I am sure that this is John THOMAS's daughter and I am sure that "Elivia" is an error in transcription. Also, an Elthan STEVANS appears in the 1840 Autauga Census, p 31A, with one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. There were no other family members, as one would expect if they were married in October 1839. Also, there are an extensive amount of Estate Records for the Estate of a Thomas TOWNSEND in Autauga County, beginning in 1830, suggesting that Thomas TOWNSEND died that year. From the indexes, it appears there were several children. Also, interestingly, there is an 1860 Autauga County deed from Elnathan STEPHENS to Mary TOWNSEND, et. al. I have ordered some of the estate papers, and will let you know what turns up. From the Autauga County Internet site, Autauga County, Alabama Index to Orphans Court Records, compiled by Larry W. 3. I live in southern La. and one day while out exploring an adjoining parish to search out cemeteries a friend an I visited a rather large cemetery out in the country but almost in the front yard of an old farm house. My friend located the graves of some ancestors and as we left we noticed the grave of a Confederate soldier. The story we heard was that he was training at Camp Moore and died there. Camp Moore is in Tangipahoa parish,La. and a lot of rebels trained there at the beginning of the Civil War. I guess he died a natural death but really don't know that. I've often wondered since that day if his family ever knew what became of him. I decided to share the info in hopes it might help open or even close a door for someone searching this family. Hope it helps! OLIVER P. PARRISH 4 Oct. 1828-------8 Nov. 1862 Cap. Co. F 31st. Alabama Regiment Brenda Gray Felder
