Pat Godwin https://www.dailypress.com/news/hampton/dp-nws-hampton-fort-monroe-20190418-story.html Northam calls for Jefferson Davis arch on Fort Monroe to come down <https://www.dailypress.com/dp-bio-lisa-vernon-spark-20180112-staff.html#nt=byline> Lisa Vernon Sparks Gov. Ralph Northam has called for the removal of the Jefferson Davis Memorial arch at Fort Monroe, saying its continued presence has an “adverse effect” on the historic property and urged the authority’s board of trustees to initiate steps to take it down. In a letter presented Thursday to the Fort Monroe Authority Board of Trustees, Chief of Staff Clark Mercer relayed the governor’s stance, asking an eight-member panel and those ex-officio members present to take necessary steps to remove the arch and all references to the Jefferson Davis Memorial Park, located at Bernard and Ruckman road intersection near a 500-yard terreplein. The archway entrance to the Jefferson Davis Memorial Park was built on the ramparts in 1956 by the Army on behalf of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The group paid $10,000 to build the 50-foot wrought iron structure. “This process will require a detailed review … along with significant public engagement. I believe it is appropriate,” Mercer said, reading Northam’s letter. “I feel strongly that a memorial glorifying the President of the Confederacy has no place here, especially given our efforts this year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of enslaved Africans landing at Old Point Comfort. Northam’s position, which some present called bold, argued while the arch and park are listed as contributing elements to the Fort Monroe National Historic Landmark designation, they “were constructed after the landmark’s period of historic significance ended,” his letter stated. Members of authority’s board, after some debate, voted unanimously to take steps to have the arch removed, a protracted process given the federal constraints facing the historic landmark district. The vote took place during the second day of a two-day retreat with a tour of select spots on the 565-acre former military post that included a visit to the archway. The United Daughters of the Confederacy conceived the original project to erect a structure in honor of Jefferson Davis, authority officials said. Davis, the former U.S. Secretary of War and president of the confederacy, was incarcerated for treason within a casemate cell, a mere walking distance from the archway and park. Christine Gergely, 72, of Newport News, a representative with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, was in attendance Thursday. Gergely was there with her husband and spoke in defense of the structure, saying it was accepted by the Army in good faith. “How can you have ‘one nation under God’ and destroy a piece of history?” Gergely said, referencing a comment another board member made earlier. “Removing the arch is just denying the original history. I think it’s wrong. We have as much right to our things we have given in good faith, as anyone else.” (Rob Ostermaier/Daily Press) Mercer later summarized Northam’s letter, saying the governor feels there is a distinction between teaching the history about Davis at the Casemate Museum “and a memorial on a hill that glorifies and honors an individual we don’t feel is a contributing factor … but we feel takes away from the actual contributing elements and their historic significant.” Mercer said. “When we look at what contributing elements are ... we feel the mid-1950s falls outside the scope of that. It’s not a coincidence this was put up the same year … of Virginia’s massive resistance.… It’s incompatible to have that and tell the story we are charged to tell here.” Board members also considered some options in the meantime — including adding interpretive signage, changing the name on the arch, or even remove, obscure the letters or store them — given the optics of the structure as the community prepares for the commemoration events in late August. “This is where freedom lives, and everything should be consistent with it,” said board chairman James Moran. “I think the interpretive signage is going to be quite provocative in and of itself.” Ex-officio non-voting member Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball added, “That’s a very offensive structure, largely because of the timing. I would not want anyone coming here without some interpretation of that sign. I think it’s really important to get something up there. It just sitting there, like an endorsement.” The letter primarily was addressed to David Stroud, the authority’s historic preservation officer. Stroud said his office will begin reviewing the request. The historic landmark designation lists the Jefferson Davis Memorial Arch and park as a contributing landscape feature and is outlined in a programmatic agreement crafted before the Base Realignment and Closure Process — BRAC — in 2005 and before the military post was decommissioned in 2011. Northam has faced recent criticism about a blackface photo in his medical school yearbook, but the issue of removing the arch had been an objective when he was lieutenant governor and served on the authority’s board in 2014, Mercer said. “It’s never a wrong time to do the right thing,” Mercer said. Dear Ladies, I’d like to share this article with you about our local historically famous family…Commander Catesby ap Roger Jones. Catesby ap C. Jones is the love of my life and like Mrs. Llewellyn, when Catesby passes away (if I am still living!) another void will be in my heart. Selma Chapter 53 bestowed the Military Service Cross of Honor to Catesby’s daddy, WWI Veteran many years ago of course and we have also given Catesby ap C. Jones the Service Cross for his WWII service. When we have our events here in Selma Catesby always wears his daddy’s medal as well as his own! The Catesby ap R. Jones ancestral home is located on Tremont Street and is very beautiful! He built it as a wedding gift to his bride Gertrude Tartt Jones. They are both buried in the family plot in Live Oak Cemetery. Commander Jones of course survived the war, only to be shot by a neighbor in his front yard sometime after the war! I call the Jones Family “Selma’s Royalty”! Selma Chapter 53 will be hosting our Confederate Memorial Day Service Friday 26 April 2019 at 6PM at Confederate Memorial Circle, Historic Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Alabama. Rev. Von McQueen will be our Keynote speaker. Immediately following the program, a lot of us retreat to the Tally Ho Restaurant for supper. Please come join us! Bring your friends, family, chapter members, neighbors, associates to Selma and bring a lawn chair and an umbrella just in case! Catesby will be there too! Confederately yours, Pat Godwin Selma From Dragoon Larry Miller: Hey Gang: This birthday tribute to WWII Veteran Catesby Jones was published Wednesday, April 17 in the Selma times-Journal. JGS HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATESBY: World War II veteran Catesby ap C. Jones is having a birthday. He will be celebrating his 94th to be precise, and his spryness is living proof of age just being a number. It is our privilege to be one of the first to bring Catesby Happy Birthday wishes. The Welch patronymic naming conventions are complex whereby children are identified by the name of their father. The term “ap” is a Welch term meaning “son of.” Therefore, please bear with me. Here is the lineage as they relate to our subject Catesby ap C. Jones. Catesby’s great grandfather was Commander Catesby ap Roger Jones. His grandfather was Roger ap Catesby Jones, and his father was Catesby ap Roger Jones. Confusing isn’t it, but important to relate the family tradition of exceptional patriotism and devotion to God and country. No one can deny the patriotism and sacrificial service of the Jones family. Ancestrally speaking, they have served in multiple branches of military service with distinction and honor including Navy, Army Air Corps and Army. Commander Catesby ap Roger Jones was the son of Major General Roger ap Catesby Jones. Commander Jones served both in the United States Navy (USN) and the Confederate Navy (CSN). He was commanding the CSS Virginia (Merrimac) when it engaged the USS Monitor. The first ever battle of the two ironclads was declared a draw. However, the ironclad USS Monitor withdrew first from the engagement giving the Confederates reason to declare it a victory. In 1863, Commander Jones was sent to Selma to supervise the ordnance works so vital to the Confederacy. One of the productions here was the Brooke rifle as displayed in front of present day Selma City Hall. Catesby ap Roger Jones, Catesby’s father, served in World War I and World War II. He fathered two sons, Roger ap C. and Catesby ap C. our birthday boy. All three served in World War II. Colonel Catesby ap Roger had obtained his rank by serving in WWI and continuing to serve in the Army Reserves and the Alabama National Guard before volunteering in WWII at the age of 44. Coincidentally, the eldest son, Roger ap C., served under his father’s command in North Africa. They remained together at the North African Port of Bizerte, Tunisia where the 3rd Infantry Division loaded out for the invasion of Sicily. They would later share duty stations at Palermo, Sicily and in Italy. The younger son, Catesby ap C., enrolled at Marion Military Institute in June 1943 awaiting the call to report. The special greetings from Uncle Sam came in January, 1944. He underwent basic and advanced training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Additional training and instructions occurred in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania before the ship ride to South Hampton, England. Catesby was assigned to Company A, 1280th Engineer Combat Battalion. One of their duties was constructing Bailey bridges across the rivers of Germany for troops and equipment. They began maneuvers in January, 1945 clearing bridges, overpasses, roads and autobahns of mines and explosive devices. In May 1945, the 1280th were called upon to construct a Bailey Bridge across the Rhine River. The bridge design selected for the Rhine was floating on pontoons. However, the Bailey bridge could also be erected above the waters depending on the need and circumstances. Unfortunately, Catesby injured his knee during the construction of the bridge and spent the next three months in an Army Hospital in France. He was airlifted back to the United States on August 27, 1945, and spent some more time in Army hospitals and rehab facilities. Fortunately, all three Jones’s, father and two sons, survived the war and returned to the relief of wife and mother, the late Elizabeth Beers Jones. Perhaps, Mrs. Jones’s ordeal was equal, if not more severe, than the men in her life. Much, much more can be read about the exploits of Catesby ap C. Jones and the entire Jones family in the archived January 2, 2006 edition of the Selma Times -Journal. Happy Birthday Catesby and thank you and your exemplary family for dedicated, sacrificial and honorable service to our nation. May God’s blessings continue to sustain and keep you. James G. Back in the mid-1980's I was serving as Division Recording Secretary and today was reminded by another officer at the time, the following:"We lost a very big supporter of what is correct in the Division, with Lamurl was President. A fairly new member became adamant thatshe was going to present her own award and Lamurl refused. She said it was not according to precedent or Bylaws."Awards have always been presented by Officers and/or Chairs.
