    1. [AL-MOBILEBAY-L] Re: Registering a family cemetery as historic place
    2. Bronya Feldmann
    3. Dear Listers, This year I discovered that my family in greater Mobile left behind a family cemetery (Myers Cemetery near Chickasaw), established in 1849 and containing family graves up to 1949. It was deeded by the family to the Whistler Methodist Church. However, at some point the Whistler Methodist Church deeded the land to the County of Mobile and it is now inside a county park, I'm told. This is good, because I would assume that no Howard Johnsons will come in and pave over the cemetery. However, the cemetery is in terrible disrepair from what I've also been told and I'd love to see it restored at least to repair the broken headstones to be able to read them and to protect it from vandalism, if possible. Someone suggested getting it put on the State register of historic places and thought that I would have a good chance of getting a grant for its restoration in this way. Does anybody know anything about that? Also, does anybody know of any outfits in the state or nearby that restore old cemeteries? A friend who works in the Mobile Probate Court office thought she heard that a family cemetery can be claimed by a descendent of that family as their rightful property, because the right to the land can't be sold. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks for any help in advance! Bronya Feldmann Surnames: Myers, Dantzler-Rhodes, McInnis, Seale, Thomas, Dodds, Gibson, Baumhauer, Ramsay
