For those of you who were wondering, as I was, about the parents of Linda Dodds Baumhauer of Whistler, AL (diceased), I think I know the answer to the riddle now. Her grandson, with whom I've been in contact (and who also didn't know her background) as learned that the story goes that she was the daughter to one of Mark Dodds'es brothers. The brother, however, deserted the mother and daughter when Linda was a small girl. Then, a little later, the mother left the daughter to run off with another man. So, evidently Mark Dodds adopted Linda when she was orphaned by circumstances. Linda's son (my correspondent's uncle) tried to ask her about details late in life, but she refused to discuss it. (I guess she was still ashamed.) A very sad story, but at least she found protection from a kind and generous uncle and married well, as far as I know, and produced a successful and upright family in spite of her tragic early life.
