Nancy, I totally agree. Those who defend posting every name they can find to hand on their "tree" by saying they believe in sharing, are simply avoiding the truth - most are name collectors. They know nothing about those whose names they grab but want to enhance the numbers that show in their geckos. We all collect names because that is the nature of our hobby but that is clearly not genealogy and they do more harm than good. I HATE seeing a huge gedcom posted on Rootsweb WorldConnect which carries the statement that "I don't know anything more", the implication being "don't ask me." I work full time on my project, literally 10 hours a day and have paid thousands to qualified genealogists to document my family project.. I collect names but always go back to source material to check, verify and document. It makes me furious to see my typographical errors posted all over the public databases after my webpage has been corrected. If they would even give their sources it would help the unsuspecting find the corrections. I wish more people would start insisting that some sort of checks and balances be put on these huge "name mills" but I will not hold my breath. I tried to get WorldConnect people to simply make people hit a check mark which says "This is my work or I have permission of the owner" and you would have thought I was committing treason - they wanted no part of it. They too want to brag about their billions of name. Nola Duffy nduffy@patch.net
