Alva was born January 17, 1853, in Mobile. Family moved to New York in 1861. Educated in France. Married William Kissam Vanderbilt in 1875. Divorced him for adultry in 1895. They had three children: two boys and a girl, Consuelo who married the Duke of Marklborough. In 1896, Alva married Oliver H.P. Bellmont and was widowed in 1908.
