This message is for Gloria England, or anyone else who would like to find out more information about the Mobile fire of 1919. I email with a retired fire chief in Mobile, and he is an expert about historical fire department information in Mobile. I emailed him with this post to the list and he gave me permission to give you his email address. If you will email me privately, I will pass it along to you. I am seeking any information regarding the brothers or father of Samuel Harrison Crenshaw from Mobile AL 1829. Brothers may have been Benjamin, Henry, Jefferson C. or George W.
The Mobile Public Library has a free pamphlet entitled "Mobile, Fire in the City" by George Schroeter. The source of his information is not given, but it is a nice article. I have to back up Gloria & Steve on this one. FamilyDiscovery.com definitely has misleading information on their site. If you look at their information page, they promise monthly access at the "special price" of $7.99 a month. They then offer a renewal every two months at the "special price," to be billed automatically to your credit card. They also promise you can cancel your membership at any time. But if you visit their "Terms of Service" page, you'll see that they do not refund any money if you cancel before your month is up. They merely cancel your future renewals. Buried at the bottom of this page is their diclaimer that all the links on their site are to EXTERNAL web pages, and therefore thay are not responsible for errors, etc. I also recommend you skip this service. One of the pages on their site has a broken image link, and their "Contact" page doesn't work. Pretty sloppy work for a company that expects money for their service. Whenever you consider paying for a service or subscription databases (i.e. Ancestry.com & others), you should always a)check the Terms of Service; b) read any "Information" or "About Us" page to see who is compiling the information and how it's being done; c) check to see whether you are renewed automatically or whether you must re-subscribe at the end of your paid subscription; and d) check to be sure there is some way of contacting the company/individual if there are problems. If you don't read the fine print first, you might get taken. Just my 2 cents (or dime) worth. Teresa Gray Sault Ste Marie, MI
Does anyone know who C.S. Stewart was who lived in Mobile in 1819? Nancy Bell nb7020@bellsouth.net
I received this on my Hill list at rootsweb thought I would pass it on, I have no personal knowledge of these people. HILL-L@rootsweb.com I took a minute out of our volunteer typing time to check this site out. http://www.familydiscovery.com/ It is a fraudulent site because a membership gives you links to our free sites. You do not have to pay to get to any site in USGenWeb Right here, there is no charge to get to all the counties in USGenWeb. We are all hardworking volunteers to have genealogy information free for researchers. I have found links to our Macoupin civil war rosters, censuses, which we spent many hours of volunteer time now to have unknowing researchers pay a membership to click on a link to view our work. Macoupin County ILGenWeb volunteers have put over 1400 pages of free information and continuing to work to get more pages up. If any person finds our complete work in their membership, please notify me. Please pass this information onto any list. Let's try to keep these ripoffs from making their pile of money from our volunteer work. Please pass this onto any list you might be on. Hopefully, this site will be removed soon if not sooner. Thanks for listening. Gloria Steve Hill Natchez, Ms. flacracker@peoplepc.com
For what it's worth - there is a fairly new tourist attraction in Orlando, FL, about the Titanic. I quote verbatim from a brochure I picked up at AAA: "Titanic - The Exhibition. The world's first permanent Titanic attraction, features full-scale room re-creations, including her world-famous Grand Staircase. Also included throughout the 17 themed rooms are over 200 artifacts, movie memorabilia go back in time with our guided tours every 1/2 hour by crew members and passengers." (I think that was meant to be two sentences.) In case you wish to contact them about the magazine, they are at the Mercado Shopping Village, 8445 International Dr., Orlando, FL. Telephone: 407-248-1166. Toll free no. to Sales Dept. for ticket info: 877-410-1912. Hi, Just say I have been away too long, but who are the First Families of Mobile?, where were they from?, and what dates are we talking about here? What qualifies you to be a First Family and what do you get if you are a descendant of them? Sorry, I'm just curious. Thanks and God bless you.
A copy of the magazine ON MOBILE BAY was found among the passengers' luggage on the Titanic. It has been restored; however I have no idea where it is. Ann in Atlanta
I am looking for info on the Lacoste of Mobile and Baldwin Counties. My great grandfather was John Lester Lacoste who married Agnes Towle daughter of professor Amos Towle. John's father was Fernando Lacoste. I cannot seem to relate him to the other Lacoste in the area. The children of Augustine Lacoste and Elizabeth Hartley are listed in orphan's court procedings in Baldwin County in the 1840's when an E. Bailey and husband John Bailey gain custody. Since according to his will, Augustine is dead, I assume E. Bailey is either thier mother, remarried, or an older sister. They all seem to disappear until they start showing up in Mobile in the 1860's. Can anyone out there put me on thier trail? Charlene Moore
Does anyone have any information on the Lett and Moye families?
I just checked your site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~almobile/ You're doing a great job. I was shocked to see of the passing of Carol Middleton. She did so much for the Genealogical Community. I was sorry to hear this news. She will truly be missed. -- L. L. Scott, IBSSG - NW Florida L. L.
