Mary Ann: I ordered marriage and death certificates from this site, and they came rather quickly: <A HREF="http://www.alapubhealth.org/vital/vitalrcd.htm"> Click here: How to Obtain Vital Records from the State of Alabama</A> Kathryn "A family tree can wither if nobody tends its roots." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching these families in the Southeast: COX, CROUT, HENRY, HILL, KELLY/KHELE, LAWRENCE, LITCHFIELD, MAULDIN, NELSON, OVERTON, SMITH, TAYLOR, UZZELL, WEST. Mary Ann, The general cost in a Probate Office is $1.00 per copy plus postage and handling. Certified copies with the signature of the Probate Judge or his seal is $2.00. I didn't know in time and I paid the State of Alabama $12.00 for my mom's marriage record that I could have had for $1.00 Kay
Where do I send off for marriage licenses issued befor 1936. Both sets of my grandparents were married in Mobile County in 1916. I have found both of them listed in the probate records for mobile county. I have the book number and the page number that their marriages were recorded. My question. Do I send my request to Mobile County Clerks Office, or to the Probate Court records office? Thanks, Mary Ann
Hi Mary Ann, Send the request to the Mobile Co. Probate Court. They are very helpful there. You should get your "reply" from them with just a short while (in my case, usually within a week or two). In my search for information about Samuel Harrison Crenshaw who married Isabella Rayford, I have learned that he had a brother Benjamin L.Crenshaw. Ben married Isabella after Samuel's death. I would like any information about the Rayford family from Mobile Alabama around 1850 or the Crenshaw family related to Benjamin L. and Samuel H. Linda Philp
There is an 1856 map of the city in it called "Robertson's Reference Distance Plan of Mobile as it is in 1856". Someone from the library may know more about it. obusy1 wrote: > > Does anyone know where I might locate a street map for Mobile from 1908? > My grandfather's birth certificate says he was born at N/E Claiborne/Monroe. > I'm wondering if this was a hospital or a private home. Nancy, I agree also. The same thing happened to me. I trustingly gave information it has taken me years to accumulate. And, as you said, some of the info is not proven as it is a work in progress. I am happy to share with people who share some of my lines. But I was very upset when someone told me they had seen the info on Family Tree Maker. I wasn't asked for permission and info was given on a lot of living relatives. Mary
Does anyone know where I might locate a street map for Mobile from 1908? My grandfather's birth certificate says he was born at N/E Claiborne/Monroe. I'm wondering if this was a hospital or a private home. When looking at a map of today, Monroe/Claiborne do not intersect. It looks at though a freeway now runs approximately where the two streets would have intersected, providing, of course, that the streets are in the same location as they were in 1908. Thank you so much for any information that you can forward! Diane in California Researching family names: Allen, Hasselvander, Clark, Hoffman, Rigler, Collins, Davidson/Davison
Nancy, I totally agree. Those who defend posting every name they can find to hand on their "tree" by saying they believe in sharing, are simply avoiding the truth - most are name collectors. They know nothing about those whose names they grab but want to enhance the numbers that show in their geckos. We all collect names because that is the nature of our hobby but that is clearly not genealogy and they do more harm than good. I HATE seeing a huge gedcom posted on Rootsweb WorldConnect which carries the statement that "I don't know anything more", the implication being "don't ask me." I work full time on my project, literally 10 hours a day and have paid thousands to qualified genealogists to document my family project.. I collect names but always go back to source material to check, verify and document. It makes me furious to see my typographical errors posted all over the public databases after my webpage has been corrected. If they would even give their sources it would help the unsuspecting find the corrections. I wish more people would start insisting that some sort of checks and balances be put on these huge "name mills" but I will not hold my breath. I tried to get WorldConnect people to simply make people hit a check mark which says "This is my work or I have permission of the owner" and you would have thought I was committing treason - they wanted no part of it. They too want to brag about their billions of name. Nola Duffy nduffy@patch.net
Hello... I am the Webmaster and Administrator of the Mobile & Bay Shore Railroad Historical Society, based in Mobile, Alabama. Our main function is the documentation and publication of resources about this short, 39-mile-long branchline of the Mobile & Ohio which ran from Prichard to Bayou la Batre. In the course of our research, we have run across instances of several stations and flag stops where the name changed during the railroad's 40-year lifetime. One such name change is FROSHINN, which is of German origin, and means "sense of glad". Modern maps, at least from the 1920's onward, refer to this area by the name known today - LAURENDINE. This is known to be a family name dating back into the Civil War period. Our society is looking for information about both names, when the change took place, and what the reason was for the change. If anyone can provide some of this information, we would appreciate it. We also invite everyone to take a look at our website. The address is noted below. -------------------------------------------------------------- Craig McGraw Webmaster, Mobile & Bay Shore RR HS URL: http://bayshorehs.tripod.com/index.htm EMail: bayshore@garbersoft.net
I was able to find quite a few years of Mobile city directories on microfiche through my LDS library (Mesa, AZ). They have them onsite, however I don't get there very often (a few times a year). I don't remember which years they were but they did have the mid-1800s. You might check your local LDS Family History Center and see if they have them, if not, maybe they can be ordered for you - that is, if you're not in Mobile. > The following e mail was sent to a mailing list I'm on. This type of behavior is inexcusable. I wrote to ancestryweb. com and sent a copy of the letter to the person in question. Their e mail addresses are on the website below. I think we all should write and protest this behavior, as it violates a legitimate genealogist's "code of ethics", so to speak! Anita, Yes, the genealogy branch of the Mobile Public Library has all the city directories, going back, I seem to recall, into the late 1830's or so. Someone else on the list may be able to supply the exact range of dates, but you'll find a complete set there extending back into the time period that you are interested in. --Mark

Jerry, Thomas W. PARK is identified in the 1860 census as having been born in England, as was his wife, Ann. The had a daughter, Margaret/Mary who was less than a year old in that census. The 1870 census shows Ann and her daughter still in Mobile. The 1850 census records for Greene County or Mobile County don't have Thomas listed. BTW, Thomas was killed in the second sinking of the Hunley. The ship and last crew were lost on February 17, 1864, (the third sinking) while attacking the U.S.S. Housatonic. Hi Jabe, I don't know of the names you mentioned, but do you have any MILLERs in Mobile? I'm specifically looking for one by the name of George Poe MILLER who married Eliza DAVIS. My ggg grandfather was her father, "Original" George DAVIS, and her brother was my gg grandfather, Isaac DAVIS. I would like to learn more about George Poe MILLER. He was born 27 Feb. 1798 in Washington Co., PA. and died 26 March, 1869 in Mobile. He's buried in Magnolia Cemetery. Forgive me if I've already asked you about your Miller connection and it didn't connect! If there are any other MILLER researchers out there who may know about this MILLER family, I'd love to hear from you. Looking for any information on Thomas W. PARK (Mobile) who worked at the Park and Lyons shop and helped H. L. Hunley build submarines for the CSA. Hunley and Park moved the sub to Charleston to evade the Federals. On Oct 15, 1863, the submarine was lost and all crew members died including PARK and Hunley. These men are buried at the Magnolia Cemetary in Charleston. Any information would be helpful as I am trying to establish a link to the PARK family in Greene Co., AL. Thank you. I need to know if there was a church in Mobile, AL in the early 1900's that had "St. John's" as part of it's name. A marriage record dated 1900 has a note on it that shows the marriage will take place in the St. John's Church. Is this a Catholic Church? Can anyone tell me if the church is still in existence today and where it is located so I and check for further records. Thank you! Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com
