    3. I posted some time ago regarding information that I found on my grandfather's birth certificate. It states that he was born at the N/E Corner of Claiborne/Monroe in Mobile County. A very kind soul sent me a map from 1856 that shows that these two streets do indeed intersect. They do not now. I also had several other suggestions about obtaining information. Unfortunately, I investigated all of them and have been unable to obtain any additional information. I was wondering if anyone has access to records that would show if the N/E corner of Claiborne/Monroe was a residential area or a hospital. Does anyone have access to the University of Alabama library? Supposedly, they have a phone book there from 1908 (the year of my grandfather's birth). Is this something that would be easy for someone to do? Is anyone, by chance, on their way to the UoA for research and would mind looking up something in a 1908 phone book? Thank you all so much in advance for helping me find this important piece of information. Diane in California Researching: Allen, Hasselvander, Clark, Collins, Davidson/Davison, Rigler, Hoffman

    3. I want to thank each and every one of you who helped me find my ancestors in the St John's church. The correct church was the St John's Episcopal Church. I have been in contact with the church historian and she will be sending me information. This is very exciting to me and I could not have accomplished this without your help! I need your help again. I want to send for some death certificates for my family members and I don't know which is the better way to do this for the State of Alabama. From past experience with other states it is sometimes better to do this at the County level and for other states it is better done at the State level. What is your advice? I would appreciate the address of the Health Department for Mobile County if this should be my better choice. Again, thanks so very much for all you help! Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com

When I was looking into this name change, the anti-German mood of the country was what I figured on, too. Your spelling of the name, however, escapes me. The map on which I found this name had the "SH" combination, as did the few Web hits I was able to locate. Is there, perhaps, a time-frame when the new spelling may have started? -------------------------------------------------------------- Craig McGraw Webmaster, Mobile & Bay Shore RR HS URL: http://bayshorehs.tripod.com/index.htm EMail: bayshore@garbersoft.net

    3. Hello, I am new to the list and am looking for people in Wilmer and Fairview in Mobile Co. I am looking for the burial records, obituary and cemetery records for Edna Riley Andrews, who passed away about 1978-79. She lived in Fairview...I'm told...a small community around Wilmer and Prichard. She also had a son, Jack Taylor of Wilmer, who passed away in 1970 and a daughter, Allie Graham, who passed away quite recently. Is anyone on the list familiar with it? I would appreciate any help with this. Thank you, Sue P. Elliott

    3. Actually, the name is properly spelled Frohsinn and means to be in a happy mood or spirit. If the name was changed around the time of WWI, it may have been in response to anti-German sentiment at the time. Hamburger steaks were renamed Salisbury steaks for this reason at the time. 3. My friend just sent me this info about Mobile books that I didn't know. Perhaps it can help someone/ Excerpted letter: Quoted: Thanks for the info on Hamilton's book COLONIAL MOBILE. I had been trying to get that book for over a year and was finally successful in getting a copy of the enlarged and amended 1910 edition earlier this year. And it cost me a small fortune!! Now, I find out that Heritage Books has it, plus four other great AL research books, on a CD for $28.00 !! http://www.heritagebooks.com It is CD #1418 entitled HB Archives: Alabama Volume l - and contains History of Clarke Co by John Simpson Graham, Colonial Mobile by Peter Hamilton, Revolutionary Soldiers in AL by Thomas Owen, Early Settlers of AL by James Saunders, and Cemetery Records of Greene Co AL by O'Levia Wiese. You might want to pass this on to our friends on the MobileBay message board before someone spends a lot of money unnecessarily. If one is a collector of old and rare books, I can see the investment. But if all you want is the information contained in these references (like I do), I wish I had known about the CD first. I could have bought a lot of additional books for the $130 I would have saved!! -- Bonnie (letter to me from Barbara) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
