    1. Arranged Marriages
    2. J. E. Howell
    3. Hi; Dose anyone know anything about arranged marriages in the late 1800's? My Great-grandparents marriage was arranged, and I haven't hardly a clue why! Before the wedding they saw each other in her parent parlor. She was 17 and he was almost 27! They lived in Bayou La Batre, Mobile Co. his parent where Acadian (mother, Armenia Grelot) and English (father, George Smee) and I am unsure about her side (father, Angus Crenshaw and mother, Mary Goleman). Thanks for any help!; Amanda K. Howell <><

    1. Fernando O. LaCoste
    2. I found the following Obit in the Mobile Geneology Library while on a recent visit: Died at Whistler, September 8th, 1862, in his 26th year, of typhoid fever, Fernando O. Lacoste, Sergeant in Haynie's Battery. (Omitting poem here) He leaves a fond mother, loving sisters and brothers, and a large circle of friends to mourn his irreparable loss.- Though he left bright evidence behind him that he had been transplanted from a world filled with cares and suffring to regions of never-ending bliss, yet naught on earth can heal the wound his family have recieved, save, "Time, the Great Consoler, and Religion, the Devine Comforter." (Omit another poem here) A Friend I found what I thought was this same Fernando Lacoste in the Mobile 1860 census living with a boy of 6 John Lacoste. That John Lacoste was my gg-grandfather. Now I don't know who Fernando is. Was he the father? and if so, why not mentioned in the obit? John Lester Lacoste named one of his sons Fernando so I believe there is a connection. Did his family reject his selction of wife, or did he not marry the mother of his child, or did he take in an orphan that he adopted? .....Does anyone have anything on the Lacoste family of Mobile and Baldwin? 3. Oh Jabe!!! So glad you did this!!! My old "bottle digging/hunting" stomping grounds! I bookmarked your sites. Not enough time just now, other than to skim over it, but I will read throughly, later! Thanks so much! I am not kin... but know most of the names. I know there were some Broadus who had a Flea Market type place out towards the Mobile Flea Market. I haven't lived in Mobile in 7 years. So glad to see a little history on an area I know. 1. McMahon in Mobile
    2. Kitty Dunagan
    3. The convent you are seeking is VISITATION ACADEMY on Spring Hill Ave., Mobile. I was a student there in 1940 and at that time it was a very prestigious private school for young ladies. It is a cloisture convent and the nun's do not leave the premesis. I revisited in 1998 and although the school is now closed, it has become a retirement home for the order. I suggest you look in the yellow pages for the phone number and phone them. I'm certain all the records are available. Kitty Dunagan Natchez, MS

On her death certificate it says her father was Patrick McMahon. We have found her grave and William T and son William (Bill) whom I knew but did not have intrest in family history then. We think Mary had a sister here that was a Nunn ( the order that never goes out of the convent) my Wife say's she remembers her mother knocking on the convent door and they would only open it a little and she would talk to her Aunt. The convent was on Springhill Ave. This would have been c. 1940 If anyone know anything about this family please let me know Bryce L Hager 8689 Wolf Bay Ln Foley, Al 36535 1-251-955-1319 PS as soon as we get our house sold we are moving back there, so I will see all of you at the Genealogy meetings.
