I thought some might like the sharing of this poem... I especially like the last line. Best, Bob RE Speese It was the first day of census, and all through the land each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Thank you to L. In looking up the locations of where my ancestors lived, I found this map source very useful. It is RR maps from the early 1800s forward. It also shows the boundaries as they were at the time, which can be very important. Hello, If you live near Cullman, Alabama, Wallace State College in nearby Hanceville is a terrific research place for the Civil war. They have all of the Alabama Compiled Service Records on microfilm as well as many other CW sources to work with - most not found anywhere else other than the National Archives in Washington, DC!!! The items are in their library, which also has a large geneology floor as well. Hope this helps you. Gregn BIggs
I don't have access to the rolls but our local library has Broadfoot's rosters, if that would be of some help. Provide a name and I'll see if I can find out which unit the person served in. Hello Everyone! I am new to the listand desperately need some help! I am searching for the family of William Maloy, Sr. His son,William Maloy, Jr. (middle initial may have been either M or J), was bornsupposedly in Santa Rosa Co, FL but Santa Rosa Co was not formed until 1842.So, he was probably born in Escambia Co. in the area where Santa Rosa is now. Parts of this Family migrated in AL then into MS. In 1850 census, I have located Maloys in 6 Counties in theFL panhandle and in 14 Counties in AL, 5 of these are just north of the FL panhandle. There is a Harriet Maloy shown in both Holmes and Jackson Counties, FL in the 1850Census. She must have lived on the line and was counted by both sides! This wasWilliam Maloy's wife's name and may be the one we are looking for but noevidence other than the census. This is the line: Descendants of William Maloy, Sr. 1 William Maloy, Sr. .. +Harriet Forhand ......... 2 William M. Maloy 1840 - 1929 ............. +MaryLouise (Mary Jane) Brown 1850 - 1943 Does anyone have any prospective leads or suggestions forme? I have a Maloy/Malloy/Molloy Data Base of 4434 persons andwill search it for anyone with a lost relative. I too would appreciate any hints or suggestions for a lead! Best Regards Roy Eastes Gulfport, MS

Birthdate, place, wife, children, charges/circuits served, place of death, burial, etc. Many thanks in advance, -- Rev. Jabe Fincher ---Pensacola, Florida

Mary Ann, if you can't find them in Mobile or you want to do more checking in N.O., go to http://www.neworleansgenealogy.com and click on resources...... try the notary archives and also the library's site and also the notre dame archives. The priests wrote letters to each other and I've found a few names mentioned when I did a search there. Mobile and New Orleans were in the same 'district" so you might find something there...... ~*~*~*~*Cat ~*~*~*~*~ There cannot be a crisis today; my schedule is already full. http://www.ambiancestudio.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <tasha10@concentric.net> To: <AL-MOBILEBAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2001 10:50 PM Subject: [AL-MOBILEBAY] Rivarde > Hi, > I am new to the list and searching for information on the Rivard/Rivarde family in Louisiana.
