Hey Susie, I grew up in Crichton on Haas Ave. I would like to see the OLD MOBILE MAP. I also lived in Birdville on Ibis street with my husband in 1957. Barb.
Unfortunately for you it was 1908. Mobile records, however go back to the early 1800's. Some counties began keeping such records after the the civil war. Hello ! I am also interested in getting a copy of the old map. Is it being offered anywhere for sale? I moved to Mobile in January 1952 and moved away in 1964. Husband (recently deceased 9/2/01)back in the 40's worked for an insurance company at the time and had clients in Birdville. He also had family there years prior to that and I cannot find some of the streets that were there previously. Would love to be able to trace some of the area's he talked about. Any help appreciated....... Susie, I am very interested in receiving a copy of the Old Mobile Map. I lived across "Fulton Road" from Maryville on Eslava Lane and then on WIllow Lane. I sure do remember "Birdville". My wife walked to Brookley every moring--to work. Jim Stephenson
Mary. You have brought to mind memories of my child. Birdville. We moved to Titmouse and later on Ibis Drive not long after I was was born in 1947. My parents were living in a one apartment on Selma St. when I was born.(This is now in a fashionable historic district) Finding a house in Mobile was next to impossible . Birdville is the common named for is really Thomas James Place. All the streets are named for birds hence Birdville. Someone has convinced the News Media that Every thing from Virginia Street south to Brookley is this Maysville community. Wrong!!!!. Maysville is a small subdivision behind Ladd Stadium and surrounds Williamson Highschool. Now let me get off my soap box and wish everyone a Happy New Year! Susie, did I ever get around to sending you a 'thank you' for the copy of the famous map? My husband & I have both been fighting the crud that has been going around and trying to survive our family Christmas which we had to have two days early. Since then we have been spending more time in bed than up and sleeping most of that time---my mind is just in a fog. Of all times to get sick when the doctors' offices aren't open. I really enjoyed studying the map. Back when Toulminville and Crichton were out in the country and Spring Hill WAY out. That marsh area you mentioned was indeed just bare of being built up. It gave me a good chance for some day dreaming. You can plainly see the Birdville subdivision down toward the bottom. This pattern of circular streets was so new to folks in this area and really caused a lot of comment. Hi. I am interested in the name of MALAYOSA in relation to the MCVOY family (aka MAKBOY, MACABOY) in the 1790's confirmations, and also in the earlier 1800's Escambia Co. Census records. Could this be the same as MELOS that is listed as ISABEL MCVOY's name in the 1784 census? I would appreciate any information on this particular surname in West Florida, Mobile, or New Orleans areas circa late 1700's to early 1800's. Thanks. Susie, how old are you? The fifties aren't all that long ago. Let's see--when did Brookley open? Was it late thirties or early forties? Who can remember? Hello. Does anyone know if there is an index to deaths in Alabama after 1959? I am trying to find a cousin who died in Mobile in January, 1973 (according to the SSDI), and I ordered the film at my FHC for the first portion of death records. Today, when I perused it, it did indeed have Mobile county deaths on it for that month on various days, grouping first letters of surnames together, but my person wasn't there. Very confusing; it would help if I knew a certificate number! Pat Hansen Phoenix
Didn't someone need to look at an old Mobile Map? I have one. It is older than me... but we won't go into details about that part. There is Brookley Field on it. The Fair Grounds right beside it. All streets. City block map type. Detailed pretty good. There is NO INTERSTATE on this map! And West Mobile looks so strange! No mall or anything. Just little X's for "swamp". But the map is old. Probably before 1950. If someone was looking for something in particular, I could scan that section tomorrow. Susie
I am searching for any one that has information about descendants or parents of Uriah Washington Cartwright born in or near Mobile July 4, 1828 married Elizabeth Jane Speck??? died in Union County Mississippi on January 17, 1900. Any help or guidance will be very helpful. Cecil cartwright cartunio6@worldnet.att.net
Howdy ya'll, I think I have some conflicting information concerning George Washington Busby. George was born 5 Dec. 1852 in Jasper Co., Miss. He was son of John Zachariah Busby and Sarah Street. Now that the George I'm referring to has been established, was George W. married twice? If so, who and when, and what children by each wife? I have him as married to Caroline Broadus in 1881(Book 28; Page 629: Mobile County) and to Eliza Jane Grimes in 1884 (Book 30; page 203: Mobile County). I have births of children ranging from 1882 to 1909. Can anyone provide some clarification? documentation, etc. Thanks, -- Jabe Fincher---Pensacola, Florida http://jabessite.homestead.com/index~ns4.html

Hi When looking for my family my grand father was Admiral Dewy Hilburn married to Ruby Lee Bates whose sister was married to Joseph Palughi someone answered that they had a bar called Joe Palookas. Would this bar have any connection to Grand View Park. I ask as I have a flash back I believe to be a memory when I was a child, of a Funfair Park on a coast which I understand was in the Bay of Mobile. My father was William Erle Hilburn who erved in the USAF, he married my mother Sheila Patricia Bartlett but they divorced in 1961, we returned to England then. My father married Noel, but passed away in 1989. Any help would be great Lorrie _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
Hi there, I also remember Grand View Park with fondness. I remember going crabbing off the whart there. But I have to point out that the name perfectly describes how the park looked. It was a very beautiful park with old oak trees. Like many other places we remember with fondness, much of it was destroyed by Hurricane Frederick in 1979. It was never the same after that. Still, I was saddened that the site was used to build an apartment complex. Mary
Hi folks - Here are a couple of messages I sent "reply," but they didn't get to the list. It's sure fun to rmember the "old days" (for sure in my case!). Anyone recall the Alba and Gulf Clubs on Dog River? Skating at night on Michigan Ave and around Murphy? Street cars and 7th grade at Barton? Hi - It was Cedar Point Road. and prior to that it was Bay Shell Road. I remember my folks telling me it'd been called "Shell Road," (P.29 in _Images of America Mobile and the Eastern Shore_, by Frye, Nancy and Tracy Gaillard, Arcadia Publishing). It's an interesting book, and has several pages devoted to Monroe Park. I remember Grand View Park - watching the monkeys was a hoot. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RESpeese@aol.com> To: <AL-MOBILEBAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2001 2:19 AM Subject: [AL-MOBILEBAY] Re: Grand View Park > In a message dated 12/05/2001 7:11:43 PM Central Standard Time, > squirrelena@yahoo.com writes: > > << Hope someone out there could help me. Brookley is pictured on pp. 24 & 41, but no date of opening is given. However, I did work there in 1942-43, and believe it must have been begun in '39, '40 or '41. (Not much help there, is it?) You can probaly find the pictures you are looking for at the University of South Aabama Archives. They have web site. Trying a search at google .com I used to go to this same park as a child in the fifties.
