    1. [AL-MOBILEBAY] Look-up please
    2. CHRYSTAL TALBOTT
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list. I'm hoping to get some help on my husband's great-great-grandfather, Vincent O. Burgess. Our local Historical Soc., here in East Tennessee, doesn't have 1920 Ala. Census records. I'm hoping that someone could look up 1920 Mobile Co. census and check for Vincent O. Burgess, wife's name is either Agnes or Amy, they should have at least two or three children, one a daughter named Ellen. Also, Vincent is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, I was wondering if there is a listing for that cemetery and if anyone could send me his dates. He died sometime in the 1040s. Thanks for your help, Chrystal _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

    1. [AL-MOBILEBAY] Research help request from Canada
    2. James Milks
    3. Hello, My name is James Milks, and I am a hockey historian from Canada. I have joined this mailing list because I would like some help in locating relatives of a former professional hockey player named Art Coulter, who died in a Mobile nursing home on October 14, 2000. Originally, I had hoped to contact nursing homes in and around Mobile until I realized just how many there are. Also, the Mobile Register newspaper has no online resources for me to look up an obituary (assuming there is one) and try to derive next-of-kin from that, so I am really not sure how to proceed. That is why I have contacted you! I am hoping that someone may be able to consult copies of the local papers in the archives of the library or some other source and try to find the names of any children he may have had. Truth be told, I am actually looking for his brother, Thomas Coulter, who was still alive when Art died, and may very well still be. He may also be living in the Mobile area and in a nursing home. I am using Art's death to try to find Thomas, as Art is easier to track because he is a Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee, while Thomas only played a few games with the Chicago BlackHawks (but was also a member of the Canadian Olympic Team in 1936 in 400 metre hurdles). I am hopeful that Art's children will know where "Uncle Thomas" is. Any information or help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, James Milks LostHockey.com http://www.losthockey.com Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (613) 560-9855

    2. The Mobile Public Library Local History branch can be emailed at <mpllhg@acan.net> and can tell you if they have newspapers from those dates and if they are on microfilm. They can also give you the name and phone # of someone who will do research for a fee. Since I work and am handicapped I do not get downtown to MPL. The Mobile Genealogy Society might also be able to steer you to someone who does look-ups. Their email address is <mgsmobile@mobis.com>, their website is http://www.mobileroots.com, ph# 251-432-6474 M-W-F 10:30-2:30, Sat. 9 - noon. 1. Re: [AL-MOBILEBAY] Mobile Church Lookups Please
    2. Chuck - I can give you the Roman Catholic Churches for the 1800s. The first church on present site of Cathedral of Immaculate Conception 1828, cornerstone of present structure laid 1835, church consecrated 1850 , located on So. Claiborne St. between Dauphin and DConti Sts. Following this: St. Vincent Church, now Prince of Peace, 454 Charleston St., est 1847 St. Joseph (Maysville), 1703 Dublin St., est. 1857 St. Francis Xavier, 2034 St. Stephens, est. 1860 St. Bridget, 3625 W. Main St. Whistler, est. 1864 St. Patrick on Beauregard, closed in 1970s (records at Cathedral), est. 1866 St. Mary, 1453 Old Shell Rd. & Lafayette, est. 1867 St. Matthew, 906 Garrity St., est. 1898 Most Pure Heart of Mary, 304 Sengstak St., est. 1899 Some of the Protestant Churches are as follows: Franklin Street Methodist Episcopal St., corner Franklin & St. Michael Sts., est 1826, moved 1890 to corner of Broad and Government and became Government St. United Methodist Church Christ Episcopal Church, Church & Emmanuel Sts., cornerstone of present church laid 1835 Government St. Presbyterian Church, Government & Jackson Sts. , completed 1837 St. Francis St. United Methodist, St. Francis & Joachim, est. 1840 Trinity Episcopal Church, corner St. Anthony & Jackson, est. 1853, moved to 1900 Dauphin St. in 1945 State St. A.M.E. Zion, State St. , est. 1854 St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 4051 Old Shell Rd, est. 1858 Big Zion African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, 112 S.Bayou St., est. 1860 My information about the Catholic churches comes from the Archives of the Archdiocese of Mobile. Information on Protestant churches was gleaned from pamphlets issued by some of the churches from a walking tour and books titled: Historic Mobile, An Illustrated Guide, pub. in 1974 by the Junior League; Old Mobile Photograph Album published by First Federal in 1961; Where Time Bears Witness to Sound Building:Historic Buildings of Old Mobile, pub. 1935 by First National Bank. I hope this is of some help to you. You understand that some of the dates are when these congregations were established but it was a few years before their churches were built. Also, members of the Jewish faith have two very old congregations, both of which were established nearer to town than they are now. The synagogue of the Conservative Jewish congregation in Regency Place is Ahavas Chesed; and the temple of the Reform Jewish congregation is known as the Spring Hill Avenue Temple 'though it also has a Jewish name. Both, I think, were originally downtown and well over 100 years old. It is too late at night for me to check on that but can find out later if you need it. 1. Re: [AL-MOBILEBAY] BYRD's & LOTT's
    2. Ruthie Lott CARPENTER
    3. question was: Who do you suspect as being the father of your grandfather? I am also having to deal with an unknown. My father was born to a young girl who was unmarried. No one talked about who the unknown person in my case was. I, as a young child was forbidden to ask. Now that my daddy is in his seventies has now said I can search but my grandmother and great grandmother has died. Do you have some hints as what I can do? ================================= The only advice I can give you is to try to talk to as many senior members of your family as possible. Just wind them up, let them go and listen close. While I was in the Mobile area, I went up to Citronelle and just started asking around about my LOTT's. Since there is a LOTT something or another every other mile, you can find all kinds of people willing to direct you to one of the LOTT families. You might not be as lucky. The telephone book in the area you are looking is helpful too. Unless all of your ancestors had only one child each (not likely), the people you find by the same surname in that area may well be related to you. Find the oldest one you can and start listening to the stories. I spoke to a wonderful woman by the name of Mae SHEPHERD, who was born a LOTT. She showed me the bibles of her grandfather and great-grandfather. She spoke of her "Uncle Hous" fondly, as well as many of her other kin. She also talked about her "Aunt Ginnie" who married a WALLEY. My grandfather was raised by a man named WALLEY and his wife, but I was told they weren't any kin to us. Then she told me about what she had heard the adults talking about when she was just a young thing. She said she heard that Aunt Ginnie and that WALLEY man had Ginnie's cousin living with them because Aunt Ginnie was sickly and couldn't have children. She heard them say that the WALLEY man slept right between the two of them. She couldn't remember what the woman's name was, she just knew it was one of Uncle Hous' daughters. I found this a very interesting story, to say the least. When I learned that my grandmother was the oldest daughter of Houston A. LOTT, AKA "Uncle Hous" it got even more interesting. When nobody else had anything on my grandmother, other than the person who gave me this info, I began to see that she was one of the people that the other kinfolk apparently didn't talk about. So I ended up getting info from a woman that I originally thought was no direct kin, but who resembled my father more than his sister did! I took video of our chat, as well as notes. I hope some part of this is helpful to you. It has mostly been blind luck and Karma that has gotten me this far. It seems that every time I help someone find some local info here in MD, someone finds some piece of info for me down in MS or AL. Happy hunting to you! Ruthie

    2. TreeMother
    3. Hello: I am researching the Langford/Lankford family which lived in Greene Co. and intermarried with the Lotts and Byrds while migrating to MS from GA in Mobile, AL. I have copies of the marriage records. Daniel Langford/Lankford married Lavisa Lott daughter of Jesse Lott.; Judith Langford married Jesse Byrd; and Stephen Langford married Polly Byrd. These marriages occured in the early 1820's. Lavisa Lott died in Texas when she migrated here with her son, Daniel Jr. I am also looking for records on William Washington Mills and James Palmer who married sisters and the daughters of Elleby Langford/Lankford in Greene Co. Both the ladies died (probably in childbirth) and their husbands are named in land records for Elleby. Elleby's father was Edmund or Edward Langford. The name Edmund is interchangeable with Edward and causes confusion in researching. He migrated to GA about 1793 or earlier from SC. He may have been born in VA or NC between 1760 and 1770 as calculated from the 1830 census of Washington Co. Alabama. 2. Jennifer Lartigue
    3. Hello All, My name is Jennifer Lartigue. I am trying to find some information on the Lartigue Family of Mobile. the information I have is not much but maybe it can get me started. My husband is Randy Lartigue. His parents, Paul James Lartigue, Sr. who passed away @1959 and Emeline Lartigue. They had four children: Paul James, Jr., Larry Glenn, JoAnn and Randall Brice. Paul Sr.'s parents were Robert A. Lartigue Sr. and Kitty (?) Lartigue. They are both buried in Pinecrest Cemetery I believe. They owned the land where Brookley Air Force Base was built. From what I understand, The Federal Government somewhat forced Kitty to sell them the land for what it was assessed for (for little of nothing). At the end of the war instead of letting the family but back the property it was then donated to the City of Mobile. I have heard stories that the fireplace that was in Kitty's house was used in the Officer's Club. I believe that Paul, Sr. was born in Mobile. I am not sure of his parents names. Kitty, we think was born in France. I believe her maiden name was Deveaux. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jennifer Lartigue _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

    2. Jennifer Lartigue
    3. Dear Group: Help, Help, Help. I have found a little more information about the Caminas'. On April 11, 1908, Antonia Fernandez Caminas, along with her two children (Hortensia age 2 and Antonio age 8 months), arrived in New Orleans, LA aboard the S.S. Excelsior to visit Antonio Caminas. Their passage was paid for by N.M.F. Co (Mobile). Antonio being her husband was said to be working for this N.M.F. Co. making the times for the Bellingrath home. Mr. Bellingrath had gone to Cuba to hire six men to come to America to work for him. Antonio arrived in New Orleans on Jan 11, 1912. The family story is that Hortensia then returned with her family to America at the age of 15. I am very interested in finding the ship manifest when the entire family came over. The group would have possibly consisted of 1 female adult with either three or four female children and two male children. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I have listed the full names below. As much as I know. Antonio Caminas - Father Antonia Fernandez Caminas - Mother Enrique Fernandez - Mother's brother, brought his sister and children over to America to be with husband. He then went back to Cuba to open a restaurant. He never married. Family lost touch and no one ever heard from him again. Mary Hortensia Fernandez Caminas - Eldest Daughter Anthony Caminas - Eldest son Emeline Caminas - Born 1909 Josephine Caminas - Born 1911 Charlie Caminas- Born 1916 Maria Olga Del Carmen Caminas - Born July 17, 1918 Thanks in advance for any and all help.
