The Local History and Genealogy Division of the Mobile Public Library, the Mobile City Archives, Mobile City Clerk's office, and the Museum of the City of Mobile would have books listing the mayors. But this would be quite a list since Mobile is 300 years old and I don't think it is in electronic form anywhere. Is there a particular person or time period you're looking for? Ralph Poore 3440 S. Hello, I am the fellow from Canada who joined this list in the hopes of finding a lead on the brother of Art Coulter, who died in a Mobile nursing home in 2000. Here is the series of events that led me to him: - I posted a request for info on Art Coulter's death - Somone on this list was able to tell me that he had died in Baldwin County - I then found a list of nursing homes in the Mobile area online - As luck would have it, the first home I called in Spanish Fort, turned out to be the one I wanted. - The nursing home had no real information, but was able to give me the name of the funeral home that handled Art's funeral - The funeral home said they had contact information for Art's family, and agreed to forward a letter on my behalf. - The family then forwarded the letter to Thomas Coulter in the Chicago area. - Today I received a letter from Thomas, who is well and turned 91 this week. I must admit that I had pretty much given up hope on finding Tom, but thanks to this list , a lot of long distance charges and a little perseverance, I found him. > What are the requirements for becoming a substitute teacher in Baldwin >County? Hi Jabe, As of 4 years ago, the only requirements were valid ID and at least 3 personal references. They will fingerprint her and I believe they will do a background check (or at least they SHOULD on EVERYBODY). The only drawback I think is that it takes about 2 months to get a paycheck, but believe me, subs are hard to come by and so she should stay busy! After she receives her card, she should take it around to the schools and let them make a copy of it and her SSN and get a phone no. and address. Good luck on your move! My g-g-grandfather James McAlister died in Mobile 2-8-1870. He was born in Campbeltown, Scotland in 1823. He had a younger brother Neil McAlister who "lived to an old age" there in Mobile. Both worked in shipping repair and construction before, during and after the Civil War. James is documented as helping construct the Hunley at Park & Lyons. Looking for descendents of grand uncle Neil as well as other descendents of James. Any cousins out there? Would anyone know what Enumeration district the corner of Layfayette Ave and Brazil or Basil St. would be in the 1900 census? I can't tell from the descriptions. Thanks for any consideration! Mary Ann
Fort Charlotte, originally called Fort Conde by the French who built it, served during the French colonial period as a buffer between French New Orleans and the Spanish in Pensacola and the British on the Atlantic coast. The fort also protected the French settlement in Mobile against Indian uprisings. Great Britain's defeat of France in the Seven Years' War resulted in Mobile and the fort passing into British control in 1763. The British lost Mobile and the fort in the American Revolution to the Spanish, who renamed the fort Charlotte. The Americans took over the town and the fort in 1813 during the War of 1812. The American settlers had no use for the deteriorated fort and tore down its walls and sold the land in lots. When the I-10 tunnels under the Mobile River were constructed, Fort Conde was partially reconstructed and serves today as a museum and tourist attraction. Ralph Poore 3440 S. On the blm site which has just been put back on line I found a very curious thing. In October 1 and 15 of 1821 a group of men, one of whom is John Hogan bought numerous 30 ft sections of land at the site of "Ancient Fort Charlotte" in the City of Mobile." There are other buyers as well on the same small section of land. They were among other l Willliam Barnett, Edward Hall, Addin Matthews, Frances Armstrong. There were over 130 purchases by some or all these men on October 1, and 15th. All purchases were less than an acre. I believe that John Hogan is the same Captain J. B Hogan who was a land speculator and sold bounty land grants for War of 1812 soldiers. I have the document where my ancester Martin Franklin and his two brothers gave him legal right to sell their bounty land warrants in 1819 and 1820. At that time they were in Baldwin County Alabama. Does anyone know the historical significance of these purchases? Can anyone tell me about Fort Charlotte? I am curious and think it makes a wonderful genealogical story. I should say that my ancestors bounty land grant was in Arkansas and apparently unrelated to the Fort Charlotte purchases. Thanks in Advance, Belinda Jacks

I am new to the list. I am researching CLARKE family mainly of Marengo and Perry County. However, I just found in the will of Henrietta M.H. Clarke, reference to a daughter Virginia. In probate records dated 17 MAR 1871, Virginia is listed as the wife of Henry F. WILSON and residing in Mobile. Henrietta's probate records in 1866 list a M.V. Clarke, so Virginia may be a middle name. In the 1870 census in 8 W. Mobile I found a Henry Wilson, age 31, Mary V. (30), Henry (2), and Richard (1). I have no idea if this is a connection or not. Henrietta M. H. Clarke was married to Robert CLARKE. Children were: Roberta Maria CLARKE Ruffin b. 1829, Robert G. (Gray?) CLARKE, Virginia CLARKE, and Andrew Becket CLARKE. Order of birth unknown. This family was known to reside in Dayton, Marengo Co. AL in the late 1830's. The family resided in Uniontown, Perry Co. AL after 1839 and Robert, Henrietta and Andrew are believed to have died in Perry Co. Robert Gray CLARKE b. abt. 1834, resided in Clarke County, AL. Roberta died in Faunsdale, Marengo Co. AL in 1909. Hoping to find cousins, Kim in AL
Recently, I put up a request to find a cousin on my mother's maternal side, Martha Belleisle Price Shenesey. A lady named Eugenia Parker responded back and said she writes a genealogical column for the Mobile Register newspaper, and wanted to know if I would like to put in a query in her column. Well, I want to let you know that I took her up on the offer, and the very same night it first ran, Martha called me. You see, it really does work! Ms. Parker has told me that one of the things this column can be used for is queries. I would highly recommend this way of finding living relatives who might be able to help you with your trees! Give her a try. You never know what might happen. Eugenia's e-mail address is GENGEN1@prodigy.net. Pat Hansen Phoenix, AZ
Hi Everyone, Volunteers for the West Florida Regional Library (WFRL) "Reference-Genealogy" Department are in the process of Surname Indexing 36 Volumes of original Fisher-Pou Funeral Home, Pensacola, Florida Financial Account Records that span the period between December 1926 and August 1979 ... Besides local Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, Florida residents, the records reflect those services provided to transport individual remains to distant locales throughout the United States ...
