Mary Ann in Birmingham, I think your husband Rob Ervin is my nephew. If his mother is Elizabeth and his father is Robert Huey Hudson, he is for sure. Ann in Smoky Center FL, I am watching with a great deal of interest your email RE. George Gullett. The Samuel Ervin you refer to is my great, great, grand father. I have all or at least most of Sen. Sam's Ervin material, which he was kind enough to send me years ago. I also have a good photo of Countryside taken on the birthday of Sarah Asbury Tait Rives Ervin. It includes G.E. Gullett. I also made an inventory of the Ervin cemetery at Possum Bend(Rock West), Wilcox Co. I am also in contact with a lady from the MS Ervin's who is writing a great book on the Ervin's. Presently it is draft form. The old Tait/Ervin Plantation house, Countryside has been sold and subsequently renovated! Would you be interested in a copy of the photo? info from the cemetery on the Gullett's? I have also some other Gullett info. Please contact me on my email at [email protected]! I would like to chat with you. I live in Mobile. BOB ERVIN -----Original Message----- From: R. A. I would be very interested in getting copies of anything you got from Senator Sam, as Lib says she can't find hers. Rob has mentioned vaguely remembering a family story on a female relative vanishing on her wedding day and leaving her ring on a bench in the garden. Do you have anything like that? I have the story of Sarah A. Tait's tragic first wedding day, so that's not it. BTW, I have copies of family photographs showing your family from 1940 (that one's dated) and from several years before, if you're interested in copies. They were in Judge Ervin's desk when Rob got it. Also some photocopies of a hand written family tree. Mary Ann

Wow, what a genealogical find? Really admire Ol' Senator Sam. Yes, outstanding, the Birmingham library. My Capt. Edward Malone, Sr., CSA, Mobile cotton broker, had an old maid daughter, Miss. Elizabeth Russell "Sissy" Malone (d12-29-1979?), Birmingham, Ala. She joined the Birmingham UDC on Capt. Malone. I'd like to locate her Birmingham grave. I question her death year of 1979? Bob, Is the ERVIN you reference kin to any IRWIN's -- for example, Samuel (Erwin) Irwin born in VA about 1790; or William Brewer Irwin born 3/5/1820 in Oakville, AL; or Edward Erwin born 1740 in Long Glade Augusta County, VA ? Terry
Where did you find the MS Territorial Papers to which you refer in your post? Kathryn

Emanuel P Gaines and George Strother Gaines were brothers. Young Gaines was a nephew. He was the cattle man who had close relations with the Choctaw Indians. He married one of them. George Strother married one of his daughters. Emanuel P Gaines had an enviable military career. He was at Fort Stoddert when the former vice president was arrested and held there. Just from memory. Jim, et al: This is Anne C. in FL. When I looked for my ancestor, George GULLETT of Baldwin Co., in the MS Territorial Papers, I found him a couple of times as a chain-carrier for a surveyor named Young GAINES. Mary Ann: I'm descended from George GULLETT (1784-1819) and Mary Ann EADES (28 Feb 1800-26 Aug 1831), dau. of Capt. John EADES and Jane (Jennie) FEE - all of old Baldwin Co. MT. As you probably know, they had two sons: John Eades GULLETT (20 Aug 1816-21 Mar 1899 - my 2nd great-grandfather) and George Samuel GULLETT (17 Mar 1819-14 Feb 1885). After George's death in a fight with a mother bear, Mary Ann removed up to Wilcox Co. where her parents were now living, then married (as his 3rd w.) Samuel ERVIN (6 Jul 1776-26 Jan 1823) and had Robert Hugh ERVIN (11 Sep 1822-11 Jan 1875; Sen./Dr.). I suspect Sam was a distant cousin, as her grandmother was Jane ERVIN and her sister was Margaret Ervin EADES. Sen. Sam ERVIN told me that this Samuel was his great-grandfather's oldest brother who removed to Alabama and I'm told he was in touch with the family in Camden, AL (where they still live in the old plantation house). Did you know he was into genealogy and left his entire collection to the South Caroliniana Library in Columbia, SC? It includes a huge family tree someone else did, from the earliest Scots-Irish ERVINS from Ireland. My Jane ERVIN may show up on it, but not sure yet. Mary Ann married third to Dr. Squire GRAYSON of Wilcox Co. (b. 1793) and had William S. GRAYSON (b. 1826) and Margaret Jane GRAYSON (1829-1831). Mary Ann, her toddler, her mother Jane EADES and Robert HAILES, first husband of her sister, Margaret Ervin EADES, all died in 1831 and are buried in the cemetery behind the ERVIN plantation house at Possum Bend near Camden. John Eades GULLETT married Rebecca Jane BLACKMON. Their son William Blackmon/Ervin GULLETT came to Florida and married Victoria GEIGER. I've traced both these families back to same area in SC and suspect their ancestors knew each other! BTW, your library in Birmingham is magnificent! One of the best! Spent several days there!
