In 1961 in Mobile, AL there was a celebration of the centinal of the Civil War. Folks were dressed like in the 1860's I'm searching for pictures taken of the salesclerks in the W.T. Grant Store located on Dauphin St. across from the park. Joe Pierce
Someone was recently asking for information on how to have an old cemetery restored. I came across this List while browsing. http://[email protected] Perhaps you already know about it but I thought I would pass it on. It's a List for exchanging ideas on restoring and upkeep on old family cemeteries, reparing headstones, etc. Hope it helps. Judith Lomax Canavan, researching LOMAX in NC, SC, VA, IN, AL, FL, TN, KY.
Greetings! I've only just joined this list this week, and I'd like to tell you all about two cemeteries I've surveyed in Mobile county, that I hope may be of use to someone. Two weeks ago I surveyed the Spring Hill Graveyard: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Arc/7061/Genealogy/SpringHill.html Then I did the Reed Cemetery in Alabama Port: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Arc/7061/Genealogy/Reed.html Also, I am the state coordinator for the RootsWeb Alabama Tombstone Project, which is an effort to update all the cemetery transcriptions across the state and to place them in an Internet archive where they will be available to genealogists around the world. If anyone has a list of burials at any cemetery (Mobile, Baldwin, or any county!!) I'd love to have it to add to our growing archive. The address for the Tombstone Project is listed below. Again, I'm glad to be connected!! Pamela Hosey Long Mobile, Alabama [email protected] Check out our Web page! http://home.att.net/~dpdklong/ Alabama Tombstone Project Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/alabama.html Listowner, The Popwell Family Mail List [email protected] Pam's Genealogy Page http://home.att.net/~dpdklong/Genealogy.html
Just to pass this on, (since it concerns Cemetery upkeep). A friend of mine who is a Civil War enactor just informed me that the VA will replace headstones for any person who served in the military, INCLUDING confederate soldiers! He said you order the forms from the VA administration. Sherry http://vidas.rootsweb.com/sherry.html

Have 1700's Mobile area families of LIGHTFOOT, LOTT, PIERCE, MYRICK that I am searching for. If you have any families with these surnames would you please contact me. Also, possibilities of other ancestral surnames in that area during 1700's and 1800's would be DICKSON/DIXON/DICKERSON, STUCKEY, GRANTHAM, EARLE, DORSEY, HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON, WILLIAMS, JONES. Looking, especially, for information on the following individuals: Martha Jane Dorsey LIGHTFOOT, born: before 1775, dau. of Phillip LIGHTFOOT, married Absalom LOTT in 1781, (Need more info on her and who her mother was.....may have been named Susanna, Mary or Martha. Martha Jane may have had a sister named Margaret Susanna LIGHTFOOT who married in 1781, also, to a Henry COOK, I think, who was born in MA.) Also, looking to confirm the descent of Martha Jane Dorsey LIGHTFOOT and Phillip LIGHTFOOT from the line of Elizabeth PHILLIPS and her husband, John LIGHTFOOT and his father, Reverend Richard LIGHTFOOT of England in 1600's and wife, Jane JONES. The daughter of Martha Jane Dorsey LIGHTFOOT and Absalom LOTT was Frances Lucretia LOTT, born abt. 1800 in AL married William HATTEN. Their son, Lawrence HATTEN, (wife, Frances Elizabeth GRISHAM, dau. of Elizabeth Ann FORD and Jehu GRISHAM,) was in the Confederate Army and captured at Battle of Nashville, after fighting in Battle of Franklin, TN, and taken to Union POW camp, Camp Chase, OHIO, where he died. Their son, Cicero HATTEN, was my great grandfather. Elizabeth PIERCE, born: abt. 1780-1790 in SC, married William MYRICK, sons were named Aquilla, born abt. 1814 in GA, Henry, born abt. 1818 in AL, Jeremiah, born abt. 1819 in AL and William H. MYRICK, born abt. 1827 in MS. (Need information on parents or siblings of Elizabeth PIERCE. May possibly be daughter or granddaughter of Hugh PIERCE and Sofia HUNTER, dau of Cherokee parents, Bold HUNTER and Beaver TOTER.) Claranda 'Clara' WILLIAMS who married Hudson/Hutson H. SLAUGHTER, born: 1844, AL, he joined Confederate Army at age 16. Sometime after he returned from the war they lived in Winn Parish, Louisiana......may have lived there prior to the war as I believe that he joined the Army in Winnsboro in Winn Parish, LA. (Searching for the family of Claranda 'Clara' WILLIAMS . Possibility that her family was part Indian and part French, my grandfather showed my mother picture of grandparents who looked full blood Indian ancestry but no other information.) Della JONES, probably born abt. 1860-1870, who married Cicero HATTEN in Louisiana (Searching for the family of Della JONES. Her brother was a judge in New Orleans.) Rebeccah Jane DICKSON/DIXON/DICKERSON, born: abt. 1828, who married Isom/Isham Daniel HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON. Isom fought in the Civil War in the Confederate Army and was captured and sent to Camp Morton in Indiana in 1864 and was home in 1866, (Searching for the family of Rebeccah.) Harriet STUCKEY married Enoch HERRINGTON, born abt. 1780 in NC. (Looking for the family of Harriet STUCKEY.) Rachal Moranda COLEMAN, married Wesley BRIGHT, 1st husband, and then married my great grandfather, Spencer B. PARKER. in mid-late 1800's. I don't know if COLEMAN was a maiden, adopted or married name. My understanding is that her biological father's name was LOUIS/LEWIS and her mother was Carrie KNIGHT. Spencer B. PARKER was the son of Sarah 'Sally' JENNINGS (desc. from John JENNINGS and John PAYNE's dau. Margaret of Old Rappahannock, Va from England in mid-1600's.) and Jeremiah 'Jerry' PARKER, (desc. from Elizabeth BARHAM and Drury PARKER of VA and MD, families from England in 1600's) Sarah JENNINGS mother was Kitty EARLE and father was Bailey/Baley JENNINGS. Kitty EARLE married Bailey/Baley JENNINGS abt. 1795-1800 in Christian County, KY (searching for her family.) Would appreciate any information anyone might have. In advance, I thank you. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick

Seeking information on Alice McReynolds Schowalter, wife of Emanuel R. Schowalter. Emanuel is buried at Point Clear in Baldwin County, as is his mother-in-law, Sarah McCracken McReynolds Cole. What happened to Alice? Where is she buried? She must have died between 1870 and 1880. Would also like information on the family of her daughter, Blanche Schowalter, who married Luis J. Broadwood. The family (Blanche, Luis, and three daughters: Hilda, Edith, and Barbara) are shown on the 1910 Baldwin County, Al Census. Any information pertaining to these people will be appreciated. I'm not sure how it works in Ala, but getting gov't help is tough in most places these days, especially for cemetaries. If you go to this site, you'll see a cemetary that has quite a few historic people buried in it. Right in the nations capitol, no less! They have had to rely on volunteers to get the work done. Even the servicemen who come regularly are volunteers. Everything is explained pretty well on the website. Check it out. I hope it is helpful to you. Good luck in your searches! It was deeded by the family to the Whistler Methodist Church. However, at some point the Whistler Methodist Church deeded the land to the County of Mobile and it is now inside a county park, I'm told. This is good, because I would assume that no Howard Johnsons will come in and pave over the cemetery. However, the cemetery is in terrible disrepair from what I've also been told and I'd love to see it restored at least to repair the broken headstones to be able to read them and to protect it from vandalism, if possible. Someone suggested getting it put on the State register of historic places and thought that I would have a good chance of getting a grant for its restoration in this way. Does anybody know anything about that? Also, does anybody know of any outfits in the state or nearby that restore old cemeteries? A friend who works in the Mobile Probate Court office thought she heard that a family cemetery can be claimed by a descendent of that family as their rightful property, because the right to the land can't be sold. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks for any help in advance! People took in children from other families quite often, even when the parents were still alive. It was often due to finances, having too many mouths to feed at home. Alot of the time, the male children were taken in, in order to help the hosting family with chores. My own grandfather was raised by a family who had no sons, only one daughter. Your best bet would be to look in the census for them, I think, under the BURNS name. Good luck in your search. Ruthie --WebTV-Mail-1014032127-14691--

I am looking for information of Ossian Brownlee HUGGINS born about 1848 in Mobile. Married Nannie Dell GILLESPIE (maiden name - CUMMINGS). Buried 1897 in Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile. Looking for marriage dates and information on his father, John HUGGINS originally from Magnolia (Abbeville Dist), SC. married to Adella (Della Ann) FORT.
Mary: A similar thing happened in Mobile with two of my ancestors, James and Mary Hill. I found papers settling their estate and awarding guardianship two separate times, when the minor children became orphaned. All should be on file in the Probate Court records at the County Courthouse in Mobile. Kathryn

I am looking for any descendants of the James BURNS family of Mobile. James BURNS (b. 12 Feb. 1806, d. 13 Dec 1883) was from Ireland and Mary, his wife was from England. I believe James came to Mobile in 1836, and married in 1838. James was an engineer for the Gas Works. James and Mary had six children; John, Robert, Alice, Mary, Catherine Ann, and James, Jr. Alice BURNS married my great grandfather, John Patrick HALLIGAN (b. Aug. 1833). John Patrick designed and built a submarine, the "St. Patrick" during the Civil War, and he opened a hardware store after the war. Business was good for awhile, but somewhere around 1880 John closed the business. I believe John sent his two girls, Josephine and Maggie back to Ireland to live with his relatives. The other two sons, Albert Sidney and Robert Lee HALLIGAN stayed with their mother Alice, while John looked for work in New Orleans. In 1881, John died of a sun stroke in New Orleans, and was buried there. Two years later, Alice (age 40) died of dysentery, and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Mobile. I believe the BURNS family took in the orphaned children, Albert (age 5 years) and Robert (age 14 years) and raised them. Does anyone know if the BURNS family would have to go to court to get custody of the children, after their parents died, and would their be records that I could obtain?
