I am researching the LOMAX- MONIAC line and an unknown Creek ? woman who married a Lomax. ASAHEL LOMAX b15 FEB 1787 Guilford Co., NC died abt. 1853 Callaway Co. MO. His parents were WILLIAM PEMLOTT LOMAX and SARAH KNIGHT grandparents ABEL KNIGHT and RACHEL HARE. It is said he was half Indian which I don't believe is true. But his grandmother is RACHEL HARE and it is said she was Creek. He was supposed to have married an Indian woman named BETTY JANE around 1813 in Wilson County, TN. they had four daughters one being ELIZABETH H. LOMAX, and two sons WILLIAM and JESSE He then married LUCINDA VAN BIBBER, 15 OCT 1848 Callaway County, MO., they had no children. His cousin SYDNEY LOMAX, married MATILDA MONIAC daughter of DIXION MONIAC and ELIZABETH ELLIOTT, 4 June 1846 in Bay Minette, Baldwin Co., AL. One son, SYDNEY born 25 Mar 1859, Escambia Co., AL. According to the book Greenwood County Sketches by Margaret Watson, Matilda was a full blooded Creek woman, from the book William Lomax and his Descendants by J.B. Lomax. SYDNEY and MATILDA ran a stagecoach "Stand" on the Federal Road through the Creek Nation, Georgia and Alabama sometime between 1806 and 1836. I have the book The Federal Road, it doesn't mention them, but I have found reference to their stop being close to the CRUIT homestead. Any information would be greatly appreciated and I would be happy to share what I have. Judith Lomax Canavan

Visit THE BOARD ROOM of the MGS Web Site at > http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs/board.htm Nope, no ancestors by those names, but your message did strike a chord. One of my interesting genealogical discoveries has been that of finding out that my great-grandfather was illiterate. His son--my grandfather--was a doctor, but great-grandpop himself--evidently--couldn't even sign his own name. Oh, well. I guess if that's the worst thing I uncover, I'm lucky. Pat Burchfield
David, Jackie Feldman and others on the list were very helpful to me with same request, I thank them all again. Barbara Waddell and Jean Blount might have some reference materials still available, I'm not certain. In addition David, just in case you aren't aware, there are a number of PRINEs buried in Shiloh Cemetery. Here is the address and phone number: PINE CREST CEMETERY (334) 478-5227 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy Mobile, Alabama 36605 According to Jackie, a lady named Leslie who apparently works there is very helpful. Good Luck, David! Susann Whiddon Wandrey
Well, I finally got some of my ancestor Frederick Daniel Myers' land patent application back from the National Archives and discovered some interesting tidbits.I knew already that he had a plantation at Chickasabogue (where the park is now) and this was part of the land grant for it. The interesting tidbits were that one of the affadavits that two witnesses who knew him had to sign stated that he had built a house around June 8th of 1847 and had cultivated the tract also by the time of the application in 1848. So, now I know when he built his home. The second fascinating tidbit is that I believe I've discovered that he was illiterate! The handwriting for his signed name looks exactly the same as that of the land registrar who also signed, except it appears that my g-g-g-grandfather has made a rough-looking "D" in the middle of the signature. This "D" appears by every one of his signatures. At first, I didn't get it. Then, I noticed that one of the witnesses had made an "X" and that someone had written (his mark). Then, it hit me about the funny "D". Well, it wasn't for no reason that he emigrated to this country. Anybody have any ancestors named John Read or Solomon Oswald living in the county in 1848? These were his witnesses and probably neighbors. Bronya Berkeley, CA

Patti, I am searching for my paternal grandparents: Willaim J. THOMPSON and Mary Caroline MIXON. They moved to Clarke Co. MS about 1880. I don't know what county they were in AL. I have just found that my grandmother gave information on Virginia Mixon in Dallas County in 1880, Virginia was a g daughter, 6 years old in 1880. Apparently Mary C. had been married to a Mixon before marrying THOMPSON. She is also listed in the MS 1880 census. Doubt if they were in Clarke Co. but who knows???? Thanks. Guess T. Simmons
