I thought of one more thing to tell you all. Since this list's reply setting is set to "reply-to-list", you might consider adding your own email address to your signature as a "clickable link." MOST email software will recognize this type of link. What you do is type your email address preceded by "mailto:" There can be NO space between the colon and your email address. For example, I'll do this with my email address like this... mailto:[email protected] If you see the line above colored in blue and underlined, then you should be able to just click on it with your mouse cursor and a new email message window addressed to me should pop up. Try it. (You don't have to send the email, though -- this is just an exercise!) If it didn't work or you don't see that line colored in blue and underlined then, I guess you're email software doesn't get it. It will be an option for most of you, though, to send private replies when you need to. Plus, even if your email software won't recognize that type of link, others' will, so you could still include it in *your* message (at the bottom under your signature) so others could use it to send messages to you. Remember, though! If you are sending genealogical information, I would prefer that you send it through the list. If you are just thanking someone or telling them that you will get something for them later, etc., then send it privately. Use your judgement. 8-) -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama E-Mailto:[email protected] Listowner of MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY]
Just for the record... MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY] A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Mobile Bay, Alabama, area -- specifically Mobile and Baldwin Counties in Alabama plus the counties which border these counties in Mississippi (George, Greene and Jackson), Alabama (Clarke, Escambia, Monroe and Washington) and Florida (Escambia). Topics for the list include genealogical queries and discussions of resources having to do with the aforementioned counties and various time periods in the area's history such as the Louisiana Purchase (Mobile was the first capital of Louisiana), Spanish West Florida, the Confederate period, the Mississippi Territory, etc. As well, "press releases" from genealogical societies and libraries in the aforementioned counties are welcome. To subscribe or unsubscribe, send the word "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" (without the quotes and be sure you spell the word correctly!) as the only text in the BODY of an email message to: [email protected] (for mail mode) or [email protected] (for digest mode). Once you are subscribed, the mailing address for *ALL* postings is [email protected] You must be a member of the list to post. You should also check out the archives of this list to see if messages have already been posted that might interest you. Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl to search the list archives. When you are asked for the name of the list, enter AL-MOBILEBAY. If mail that this list sends to you is bounced back more than 4 times, the mail server will AUTOMATICALLY unsubscribe you. If you have any questions or problems regarding this list, you can contact me at <[email protected]>. Contrary to popular belief, I am not online 24/7, so be patient with me. I have three jobs. Most of the text from this and the previous 3 messages was copied-and-pasted from THE VIRTUAL MAIL ROOM at http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs/mailroom.htm -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama Listowner of MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY]
SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN REPLYING TO POSTS * If your email software quotes the original message in your reply, PLEASE delete all text from the original message that is not germane to your response. * If you subscribe to the digest mode of the list, remember to change the subject line to reflect the subject of your reply. This is very, very important!!! * If you are responding to a particular thread (a series of messages on the same subject) and the discussion starts to veer away from the original topic -- it's a good idea to change the subject line to reflect the new topic(s). Many people who subscribe to many lists (and therefore have to deal with a huge amount of email) typically just scan the subject lines and use only that information in their decision to read or not to read your message. ...more to come... -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama Listowner of MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY]
A "TO DO" LIST FOR PARTICIPATING * Please DO participate in the discussions. * Please DO post your questions about genealogical resources in the area that the list covers. * Please DO post your queries about your ancestors that you are trying to find. * Please DO help as many other people on the list as you can. * Please DO send your messages to the list in plain text format. * Please DO check out a web page titled Basic newsgroup and mailing list "Netiquette" at http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/genuki/netiquette.html -- especially if you are new to using online mailing lists. * Please DO proofread your message, the subject line AND the email address to which you are about to send it. Is everything correct? Are you sending it to an individual or to the list? Make sure before hitting SEND. * Please DO check out the vast amount of information that has been compiled on the Mobile Genealogical Society's web site. MGS sponsors this mailing list. You just might find an answer to something without having to ask the question! You can find the MGS web site at http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs * Please DO consider becoming a member of the society that is sponsoring the list. You are interested in there being more and better genealogical resources and information in this area and a strong society can make things happen. A "TO NOT DO" LIST FOR PARTICIPATING * Please DO NOT post virus warnings to the list. 99% of them are urban legends and hoaxes. * Please DO NOT "flame" anyone on the list. Be nice and people will be nice to you. * Please DO NOT post strictly personal messages to the list. If you make a new friend and start chatting, don't do it in public. * Please DO NOT send attachments of any kind to the list. * Please DO NOT send your messages using any sort of formatting (other than plain text). This means no images, no colored text, no boldfacing or underlining, etc. The mail server will simply kick it back to you without it reaching the list. * Please DO NOT include a list of the surnames you are researching in your signature file. The messages on our list(s) are archived and can be searched by visiting http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl. When somebody is searching for your surname, they need to find it only once. If they are searching, and get too many hits because your surnames are included with every email that you have ever sent to the list, they may not request all the messages and therefore may miss seeing your message that has your actual family data. ...more to come... -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama Listowner of MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY]
Hey folks, I am continuing to enjoy reading your messages and following your discussions on MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS. I have some information that you need to read and take to heart as you participate. It will make the experience easier on all of us. This information will be in several emails, so please be patient and pay attention. ABOUT MAILING LISTS Mailing lists are remarkably simple beasties -- you send a piece of e-mail to the list's address, and the list retransmits that message to everyone who is subscribed. The current REPLY setting for MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS is "reply-to-list" which means that when you hit the reply button on your email software, your reply email is gonna be sent TO THE LIST. If you want to send the reply to a particular person, you must substitute their email address in the TO: field of your email. In my view (and I'm the one that has to make these decisions), I LIKE "reply-to-list" because it causes your responses to go through the list and they are, therefore, archived on Rootsweb so that future researchers can hopefully make a connection to the information that you are posting. HOWEVER, once your conversation with someone turns "chatty", you should be sure to send those types of messages directly to the person. ALL LISTS HAVE TWO ADDRESSES Every mailing list has TWO addresses -- the list name, where posts should be sent, and the list name followed by -request, where commands to the listserver software should be sent. For example, posts to MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS should go to [email protected] while "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests should go to [email protected] (for list mode) or to [email protected] (for digest mode). LIST MODES AFFECT HOW YOU RECEIVE POSTS MAIL MODE is where every post sent to the list is resent to subscribers as a separate piece of e-mail. DIGEST MODE is where several posts are batched together and then sent to the subscribers bundled together in one email. Digests produce less clutter in your mailbox, BUT replying to an individual message requires a little extra effort. You have to remember to change the subject line in your reply email and if your email software quotes the text of the original message in your reply, you have to delete all the text that is not germane to your reply (which can be substantial). ... more to come... -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama Listowner of MOBILE BAY AREA ROOTS [AL-MOBILEBAY]
Hi Bonnie, I've been noticing your posts about the McVOY family since I subbed to this list a couple of months ago. I thought you might be interested in the following I saw tonight as I was looking at a microfilm that I borrowed via Interlibrary Loan (my library obtained it from Samford University Library in Birmingham, AL). I was looking up something on my George DAVIS in 1824 and this popped out at me: >>>Mobile Commercial Register, Friday Morning, October 22, 1824. Page 1, >>>Vol. III, No. 79. Notice. Will be sold, on the premises, on Friday, the 19th day of November, 1824, at 12 o'clock, on a credit of 12 months, for an approved negotiable Note, together with a Mortgage on the premises, three LOTS of GROUND being in the City of Mobile, bounded south by Dauphin Street, east by Claiborne street, north by the lands of John Moon. Also, all the right, title and interest of A. Robeshow, deceased, to three other lots adjoining the above, and bounded west by Hamilton street, south by Dauphin street, north by the lands of George Getz, and east by the aforementioned three (lots?), each containing fifty-five feet front, and running back 110 feet--and all sold under an order of the Honorable the county Court, as the property of A. Robeshow, deceased, to pay his debts. Joseph Krebbs, Diego McBoy, Commissioners oct.19 78tf<<< If you would like to email me your mailing address, I'll send you the hard copy of this notice, as I made a copy for you while I was at the library. Marianne Gilbert <[email protected]> Phoenix, AZ Searching in Mobile the family of George DAVIS and wife Rosetta. Children are George Jr., Eliza, Adaline, Betsey, James & Isaac. Hi; I had one of those too. George Smee (1838-1926) But I finally found him. As the family stories went he came from England to Alabama as a stowaway. For a time I thought he may have been a crook that changed his name but one night I found in some old papers of my Aunt's I found the place in England he came from. I rejoined the Essex mailing list and the next day two people answered my post! Keep looking through everything, you may find something you missed. Those Aliens came from somewhere. Amanda K. Howell P.S. Where can I find records on stowaways?
Joe, I don't know, wish I did, but if you find out, please let me know; I have someone just like that, too. Joe which is correct on Floyd's birth date, 3-25-1834 or 1-14-1834? On the papers you had sent me on Pierce's, list Jan 14. > So you think Floyd was from the Covington Co. Pierce's huh? you might be right. What do you think about the Lewis Pierce being the father of Jeremiah, anymore on him. I believe Jeremiah great-grand father was a Jeremiah from Isle of Wight, VA. and through his son George and downward, but I am tyring to prove this.
