My Thomas Malone, Sr., 1803 was land agent, magistrate, asst. Indian agent, Ft. St. Stephens, Ala., and a member of the St. Stephens Masonic Lodge and presumedly, later a member of a Mobile lodge untill his death. I'd like any Masonic information on him. Would a Masonic record reveal the maiden name of his wife or her parents? Her name was Mrs. Mary S. Malone. Someone posted a query recently asking whether anybody knew of any Masonic records that could be accessed for more information about our ancestors. I don't know whether this person received a private response from anyone or nobody had any ideas, but I too would like to research my ancestors' Masonic records, if they can still be found somewhere in Mobile County, and would welcome any tips on where to look. Does anybody know whether the old Masonic Lodge still exists that used to be above the Methodist Church in Whistler? I was reading recently that this lodge was co-founded by my g-g-grandfather. My grandfather was also a Mason. Bronya Feldmann Berkeley, CA

I'm sure others have better info, but I think this referred to a time when lots of folks were leaving town because of an epidemic. Those that couldn't leave, such as ministers and the like, organized this very informal 'club'. There is a St. Stephens Road Church Of God at 1956 St. Stephens Road. Could the church have been renamed? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 28, 1999 10:52 AM Subject: [AL-MOBILEBAY-L] St. Stephen's Road Methodist Church > Is St. Stephen's Road Methodist Church still in existence? Has anyone heard of the "Can't-Get-Away-Club" that was in existence during the 1890s in Mobile? Researching: HUGGINS, CUMMINGS, GILLESPIE and SPENCER Mary Ann Bell

Earlene, You're right, I could find no connection to Charles Hartley Smith. I probably should add YET to that statement, because my Smiths are definitely a "work in progress". There is a Julia T. (Tarver) Smith buried in the Old Whistler Cemetery who is also related, but by the Tarver, not the Smith. She was married to a John Smith and I haven't a clue on him. I intend toget the Mobile Smith marriages, on my next trip down there. There has to be a clue somewhere Plodding Along in Georgia, Betty
Is St. Stephen's Road Methodist Church still in existence? I found reference to it during the later 1800s and early 1900s.
Earlene, I'm glad to find out who those three Smith children in the Whistler Cemetery belonged to. They were buried near one of my Smiths, but they had no death Certificate listed in the Mobile County Death Index, so I couldn't check them out. I can tell you about Alex McBride Smith and his wife Elizabeth Phillehaw(yaw) Smith. He is the son of Absalom Wm. and Tabitha (McWhorter) Smith and was a locomotive engineer for fifty years, as were most of his brothers. His father Absalom was in Company E of the 21st Alabama and died December 13, 1864 as a prisoner of war on Ship Island(off the Mississippi coast). The historian for the 21st Al stated that the part of Ship Island used to bury Confederate Soldiers was washed away by Hurricane Camille in 1969, leaving no trace of their burial place. Alex's mother Tabitha was last heard of when she appeared on the list of "Maimed Soldiers and Widows of Confederate Soldiers" when the act was approved February 28, 1889 for their relief. She was then still in Mobile Co. Plodding Along in Georgia, Betty
Forgot to say in my previous message that all of the Therrells worked on the railroad, too. Zach Therrell was a locomotive engineer also. He is buried where the 3 Smith children are buried, but I found no headstone. He was their grandfather. Earlene
Thanks so much, Betty, for giving me some history on Alex and Elizabeth Smith. I assume you know of no connection between Alex and Charles Hartley Smith??? Glad my message was of use to SOMEone! Earlene

Aubrey, The Mobile Public Library Archives is located at 704 Government St with a zip of 36602. From this you can get a map printout on your computer (Yahoo makes good ones.) They are directly across the street from the main library and there is ample parking behind the building. Their telephone nr is (334) 434-7093 and they are open 9AM to 6PM Monday through Saturday. I'm sure they have the 1880 Census on Soundex for Alabama. I do not know whether they have Florida. To be sure you might want to give them a call. Have a good trip and good hunting. Apparently, Confederate prisoners, who were able, at times were offered the option of enlisting in the U.S. Army/Navy to get out of prison. Two brothers that I have traced were captured at the Battle of Cassville, Ga., sent to the Union prison at Rock Island Illinois and subsequently offered the option of enlisting in the US Army and sent to Ft Leavenworth KS to build roads and bridges.. Three others (also brothers) that were captured at the Battle of Resaca.(also in Ga.) were sent to the Alton Military Prison in Illinois. One died there, the other two opted to join the U.S. Navy when offered the opportunity. In all five instances, they had served three years in the Confederate Army prior to their capture. There are, however, no records of any application for pensions, that I have found. I'm sure there were deserters from the CSA, however, I would not apply thaterm to these people, unless I had walked in their shoes (or in their case, bare feet.). Plodding Along in Georgia, Betty
Gwen: This website allows you to look up land patents in Alabama: Click here: Alabama Land Patents When you get to the site, enter your ancestor's name and see what you find. You can view the actual land patent from that site and print it off yourself with a little ingenuity. I entered Michael Melton and found two records. That might be your ancestor. If so, it shows that his lands were in the northern part of the state, rather than down in Baldwin County. Also, I searched at this site to see if I could find a Tensaw Lake in Baldwin County: Click here: USGS GNIS Map Server http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/MapServer?f_name=Tensaw+Lake&f_state=AL& f_latlong=310354N0875218W&server=PARC This shows the actual location of Tensaw Lake in Baldwin County. This "help" may confuse you more than help you. Kathryn
Somewhere in the recent past I read a post regarding how to obtain old records from the Masons. Many of our ancestors were Masons and this may be worth searching. Does anyone know if this is productive or even possible? I know the name and identifying numbers of one Lodge in Covington Co., MS from 1870-80s. Any ideas? ..... Ray Revette/FL
