In case you didn't receive this personally, some updated news pertaining to RootsWeb......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.

If you can relate to any of these surnames, please contact me at saundra_b_2001@yahoo.com Hello, I'm continuing my research on my Oliver side of my family. My Dad and I published a book about our ancestry in 1992 entitled THE OLIVER LINEAGE, Period Covered: 1811 to 1992 North Carolina to Maryland, researched by Saundra R. Oliver Brown, and compiled by Lawrence E. Oliver, Sr. My family were slaves to Benjamin Oliver 2, nephew of Benjamin Oliver I who moved from Virginia to Duplin County, NC. Benjamin2 was born around 1803, and died in 1881. The records show he married Ann Jane Dickson on December 14, 1829. He wrote a will on July 12, 1872 and it was probated on September 20, 1881 (CR.035.801.9, volume 4, page 212 of the Will book in the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, N.C.). Benjamin2's father was Francis Oliver. His will was written October 28, 1807, probated January 1808 (CR.035.801.9, Vol. A, p. 371 North Carolina Archives. Would there have been an inventory, and appraisement, and disbursement documents to go along with this will? It was Benjamin Oliver (1803) who took notes for the NC Cohabitation Records I found out that Sawnee and Nellie Oliver lived together through the North Carolina cohabitation records. Also, in the RECORD OF NEGRO MARRIAGES, 1825-1866 which is also on microfilm #120 and microfilm C.635.60015, Sawnee Oliver has been living together for 40 years. Also stated in the Microfilm #156-0003 Marriage Bonds Early to 1868, Duplin County, NC. I estimated then that they had been together since 1826. An 1870 document labeled Acknowledgments of marriages of Persons of Colored, dated August 13, 1866 was another document that mentioned them. Also, in this same record Sawney's daughter Ellen Oliver married Martin Carr, the son of Fortin and Julia Carr, on December 5, 1868 by J. R. Oliver, M.G. My Oliver relatives married the Carrs and the Kornegays, as well as, others in the neighborhood. Then I drew up a comparison chart between the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules. Benjamin had 14 slaves in 1850 and 21 slaves in 1860, living in 5 slave houses. 1850 male slave age 70 - 1860 there wasn't a matching slave 1850 male slave age 50 - 1860 male slave age 60 - THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MY 3 X GREAT GRANDFATHER - SAWNEY OLIVER born about 1799 in Virginia 1850 female slave age 39 - 1860 female slave age 47 - THIS COULD HAVE MY 3 X GREAT GRANDMOTHER - NELLIE born about 1811 in North Carolina 1850 male slave age 4 - 1860 male slave age 14 - THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MY 2 X GREAT GRANDFATHER - ALFRED/ALFORD OLIVER born about 1846 Sawney and Nellie Oliver had 9 children as shown by the census. I don't know whether there were any children before the 1870 census. Sawney is in the 1870 NC Mortality Schedule having died in January 1870 of dropsy. In 1870, Nellie Oliver is living next door to slaveowner Benjamin Oliver2 (visitation 261-family group 259, Duplin County, NC) Now I'm ready to ask the rest of my questions besides the ones above: 1. Are there any more records there I should look at when researching my African American family? Could I get copies? 2. Are there any tax records of the African American Olivers there? Could I get copies? 3. Would there be any birth or death records for any of the people in the family group record? Could I get copies? 4. Are there any suggestions you might give me to further my research? MapYourAncestors.com I haven't had time to play with it yet â other than just exploring the examples they have â but you might want to experiment a bit with MapYourAncestors.com, a site that does exactly what the name would make you think â map out where your ancestors lived. The default example is the Bush family, and if you click on the individual entries, windows pop up with photos and basic details. For a simpler, but international example, click on "Beginner Example" at the top of the page. Note in the upper right-hand corners of each map that you have map, satellite and hybrid options for viewing. The maps also include zoom and click-and-drag functionality, so you can zero in or out, or follow a line that seems to veer off the map. If you decide to try it out, drop me a line and let me know how it goes!
Tracing Back Family Lines: Workshop helps Louisiana families uncover Haitian roots Louisiana Weekly Mon, 22 Aug 2005 12:58 PM PDT In the tumultuous years from 1791 to 1809, so many people left Haiti for New Orleans that the city's population increased by one-third. Some came by way of Cuba, Europe and New England to find permanent refuge in Louisiana. LA CREOLE celebrates local heritage Louisiana Weekly Mon, 22 Aug 2005 12:57 PM PDT Over a year ago, Pat Schexnayder and Ingrid Stanley were involved in researching genealogies in Louisiana. They met through an online forum, and began to discuss Creole history and heritage.
