    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xhC.2ACE/827.1 Message Board Post: Pat -- Just because it's not on the internet doesn't mean the information doesn't exist. In this case, there's almost too much. A good starting place for anyone interesting in Alabama units is Dr. Ken Jones and his Confederate unit bibliography: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/albiblio.html Note that there are eight published sources on the 40th Alabama. The one which will interest you was written by Captain Samuel H. Sprott of Company "A", the "South Sumter Guards". Here's a review: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0942979559/reviews/002-9770190-0012800 The only Quimbys to serve in an Alabama unit are the three (including Mathew) who appear on roll with Sprott's company. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if you are interested in copies of CSA service records. As a rule, I strongly recommend that people go to Dr. Jones and his site for information about Alabama units. The internet is a great place for people to communicate and can be used as an on-line encyclopedia. However, specialized information such as most people here seek is largely not on line and likely won't for many years, if ever. To find a National Archives service record for an Alabama soldier, search here: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html Quimby is an unusual name, so I entered only the last name, selected "Alabama" and left everything else blank. IN most cases you must enter a first initial. To check for other records on Alabama soldiers, including pension applications, search here: http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/search.cfm It's not complete, but should be in the next year or so. To ask questions or get explanations concerning any issue about the war in Alabama or service records, post your question here: http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/boards/alcwmb/index.cgi? The people who read this board and reply to your questions are published authors and experts. Click on the CWMB Monitor to go to other boards on other Southern states and war-related issues. If the answer doesn't appear there, you've got a pretty tough nut to crack. Finally, contact me about Confederate service records and pension applications. I can copy almost anything.
