He died of disease in camp at Bristoe, Virginia in August of 1861. His grave is the only one of hundreds there which is still marked. I read a 2 or 3 sentence article in the local paper from before 1900 mentioning a number of his comrades & family (none named in article) had traveled to Manassas (closest town to Bristoe) to mark his grave. Private Leatherwood is mentioned in the book I Saw the Elephant : the Civil War Experiences of Bailey George McClelen, Company D, 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment, pages 17-18, along with an interesting account of the heavy toll of disease in the camps during those first months of the war. McClelen spells William's name as Nunnelley. Regards, J. Pearson
