Companies in this battalion were composed of boys under the age of eighteen. Most would have been listed as age seventeen; others sixteen or younger. Also, keep in mind that a majority of these young men enlisted after Congress enacted legislation requiring seventeen-year olds to enroll in the junior reserves. During the late summer of 1864 two companies of junior reserves were added to this battalion and it became the 1st Alabama Junior Reserve Regiment. The regiment finally appears in the records as the 62nd Alabama just weeks before General Taylor surrendered his forces in Alabama and Mississippi. Most men over the age of fifty would have been in the County Reserves, which were state militia commands.
