Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/751.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, there is another Johnson in this company [Co. "D" 13th P.R. Battn.; later Co. "H" 56th P.R. Regt.]. All of them enlisted at Jasper Ala. on Sept. 6, 1862. All appear on roll through Oct. 1863, the last issue on file. The names are Freeman, N. J. and W. M. Johnson, the last named on roll as a bugler. Although Johnson is a common name, these men should be close together on the Walker County 1860. Also, have you ever used the agricultural census for 1860? Those who need only names, dates and places won't be interested, but if knowing how your ancestors lived had any attraction to you, this is it! The ag. schedule provides more detail than most can imagine about these people's farms. It records everything they raised or made except distilled liquor, and every animal except dogs, cats and feathered creatures. Here's an abstract of a Virginia County for 1860: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/gray60ag.htm Alan "No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the LORD." Prov. 21:30

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/751.2.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for the kind words; I'll look for this old article over the weekend. Don't be shy: please contact me. Early next week would be good. In 1872 Willis Brewer published "brief historical sketches" of almost every Confederate command from Alabama, 116 pages total, listing company commanders and counties in which each company was recruited. My copy has been in use since 1966 and badly worn as a result. The ADAH has graciously provided all of us an on-line copy: http://www.archives.state.al.us/referenc/alamilor/mil_org.html Brewer says little about the 56th Alabama; almost nothing about the companies from Walker and surrounding counties. That inspired me to do the research and write the article on the 13th Alabama P. R. Battalion. I also searched for each member on the 1860 census to see what areas of Walker and adjoining counties were represented. Capt. Freeman Johnson's company organized at Jasper Ala. on Sept. 6, 1862, his commission bearing that date. Members came from northern Walker and southern Winston. The company received the letter designation "D" in Major William A. Hewlett's 13th Battalion. On Oct. 6, 1862, Hewlett took the four companies of his battalion to camp at Columbus Miss., where they remained several months. In April 1863 a company from Fayette County joined the battalion. At this time Hewlett decided to place recruits that had recently come into camp in a new company. This new company was strengthened by transfer of most of Capt. Johnson's Winston County members to its ranks. These additions increased Hewlett's battalion to six companies and thereby qualified him for promotion. At this time the battalion had been picketing near Smithfield and Aberdeen Miss. On June 8, 1863, the 56th Alabama P. R. Regiment formed by combining five companies of the 15th Alabama P. R. Battalion with six of the 13th Alabama P. R. Battalion. The merger, which took place at Okolona, Mississippi, was confirmed by the Adjutant & Inspector General in Richmond Va. on July 8, 1863. Sometimes the command was called the 56th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. Officers and men enlisted for three years or the war. The article covers the command's military career in more detail. Members of the regiment were among the last Confederates to leave Meridian Miss. and Atlanta Ga. when Sherman visited those cities. They formed part of President Davis's escort when he rode south from Charlotte N.C. to Washington Ga. disbanding at the latter point on May 2, 1865. It doesn't surprise me that one of the three Johhnsons in this company (Co. "H", 56th Ala. P.R.) remained in the Carolinas. In addition to the article, I can provide copies of the service records of the three Johnsons in this company. As long-time company commander, Capt. Johnson's service file is rather full, including pay receipts, clothing issues to his men (cotton shirts and wool jackets), feed for horses &c. I haven't looked, but there may also be entries for them on the 1907 census as well as Ala. pension applications. Let me know how else I may assist you. Alan "The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD." Prov. 21:31

Please- anybody I would love info on Freeman Johnson and the other 2 family members mentioned! I am so excited to see someone else looking for these people besides myself I can hardly type this out straight! Maybe I have something that can help you out. I have been wanting to see what Alan had available, but was too shy to ask. I would love to see his article he is mentioning in his posting. It has been a family mystery for a long time, and I have finally been able to recently have the time to work on it. Cathy, Alan- please contact me. I may not get back with you for a couple of days, but I do want to compare notes. I am a great great granddaughter of Freeman Johnson.CSA 13th, later with the 56th Partisan Rangers, buried near the Rome, GA area. I am a descendant of his son, Nicholas J. 'Nick' Johnson. I wondered where he got his name from, and heard he had brothers, but all the documentation I had only showed sisters in the Walker County, AL area. Thanks, Jill Herrin

We know that Nicholas Johnson was here in York County, SC when the war ended. He met and married my greatgrandmother here and stayed. We heard he had a brother in the war also, that he may have been killed. I'm searching in hopes of finding something about his family. Do you know anything about Capt. Freeman Johnson? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    3. Are you just interested in the twelve-month company or still following it after initial enlistments expired? I have found little in the Mobile Advertiser & Register about the 2nd Alabama Regiment, but saw articles about this company in the Claiborne Southern Champion, February 8 and March 22, 1861. These newspapers are on file at the ADAH in Montgomery. Alan Pitts "The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts." Prov. 20:27 -----Original Message----- From: D. A. The 6th Cavalry was over the Alabama line in adjoining states for very short periods, but never went into Tennessee. The 7th Cavalry is another story, however. We need to be certain that the soldier in question really belonged to one unit or another.

    2. I'm looking for any info on Silas Rice, born in Ga, but living in Al when the war started. He died in 1863, and is suppose to be buried in Rehobeth Church Cemetery, Houston Co (possibly Geneva Co) Al (I've looked but can't find his grave). Also, James Bennett Robbins, born in Ga/SC?, died in war. And the last one is my real problem. I THINK maybe the Rogers I'm looking for is Joseph Rogers. All I know is a Rogers soldier, killed after early 1865 (last child born in 1865), leaving 5 small children. His widow killed herself shortly after his death and the children were put into foster homes scattered over what is now Houston and Geneva counties. thanks for any info on any of these soldiers! shandi
