    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/759.1 Message Board Post: Records of Company "A", 1st Battalion, Hilliard's Alabama Legion show that E. E. *McCrosby* volunteered at Montgomery Ala. on March 6, 1862. However, he was inspected by a surgeon, rejected for service and not enrolled. E. E. McCroskey enlisted as a private on August 1, 1862, in Co. "H", 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers. He was assigned to duty with the Conscript Bureau in Alabama shortly afterwards. A pay record dated Camp Watts, Ala., March 10, 1863, notes that he had been enrolling conscripts in Montgomery County from Dec. 11, 1862, through the end of February. A company roll for Nov.-Dec. 1863 shows him absent, detached by order of General Morgan. McCroskie requested a commission as 1st Lieutenant and Drillmaster, P.A.C.S., on July 28, 1863. Although his request was endorsed by Major Ready, who cited his qualifications and experience, it was not accepted for what appear to be administrative reasons. Ink on several pages of correspondence in his file is quite faded and difficult for me to read. However, another document shows that McCroskey received pay as a private on Sept. 15, 1864, for service through March 31, 1864. Surgeons routinely examined prospective recruits and sometimes rejected a volunteer or conscript due to age, size, physical disability, or any combination of these factors. However, Major Ready's endorsement demonstrates that McCroskey's aptitude as a drillmaster and ability to handle recruits overshadowed whatever physical deficiencies he may have had. I am impressed that McCroskey persevered as a drill officer at Camp Watts despite not having the rank, title and pay ($11 vs. $80 a month) of others with similar responsibilities. Of course he was eventually commissioned as a captain and the ranked all the other drillmasters, who were lieutenants. His experience brings to mind the Biblical story of Joseph in Egypt.

    3. My great great grandfather, William Ledbetter enlisted at Talladega on the 10th of April 1862 and was in Co. E 31st Alabama Infantry, CSA. He was captured, then paroled at Vicksburg, 9 July 63. He was in Wayside Hospital, Demopolis, AL, on 17 Oct. 63. Then he was captured at Resaca, 16 May 1864. He was received at the US Army General Hospital at Chattanooga with a lacerated wound of the head caused by a shell (hit his right eye) from the May 15th battle at Resaca. He was sent to Camp Douglas and discharged from there on June 13, 1865. He was 27 in 1864. William T. Ledbetter applied for his CSA pension on July 30, 1885. He was a private in Company E of the 31st Regiment of Alabama Volunteers. He was wounded, while in the discharge of his duty on the 15th Day of May 1864 at Resaca in the State of Georgia, in consequence of which wound he received such wound in such service as renders him physically incapable of making a livelihood by labor, that he was a resident of the State of Alabama on the 17th day of February 1885, that he is now a resident of Precinct No. 14 in Calhoun county, and State of Alabama and is at present engaged in business as a farmer; that he does not own in his own name, nor does his wife own, two thousand dollars worth of property, after deducting the amount of all encumbrances thereon; and that he is entitled to relief under the act "Providing for the Relief of Soldiers Maimed or Disabled during the late war," approved February 17, 1885. William T. Ledbetter made his mark (due to total blindness) on J! uly 30, 1885. My grandmother told me that he was left on the battlefield for dead and when they came back for the bodies several days later they discovered he was still alive. His eye was severely infected so he lost that eye and the infection spread to his other eye which eventually blinded him completely. I don't have any pictures of him. ----- Original Message ----- From: resacacsacem@excite.com Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 4:28 PM To: AL-CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AL-Civil-War] Descendants of Soldiers of The Battle of Resaca, Ga. 3. I am new to this list and wanted to post my interests in case others are searching for similar information. My father's family lived in Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama during the Civil War. My gg-grandfather Henry Kierce served in the 63rd Alabama Infantry as a Corporal in Companies C & E. His brother Daniel Kierce served in the 42nd Alabama Infantry in Company E. His older brother George W. Kierce was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 42nd Alabama Infantry Company E. They were both captured during the Siege at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. Daniel Kierce was taken prisoner and was paroled on May 1, 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina. George W. Kierce was taken prisoner and later paroled but was released on October 28, 1863 due to heath problems. He later was assigned as Captain of the Covington County Reserves, for Company A on August 27, 1864 and later was commanding officer for all Covington County Regiments until after the end of the war. Henry Kierce was taken prisoner at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865 and was sent to Ship Island and was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi on May 13, 1865. I know very little about him -- he is rumored to have died in the Civil War, but we have not been able to confirm this. We also don't know if he married or not. Other than his father, mother and siblings names, that's all I know about the man. I'm building a database of all John WEBBs who served in the Civil War and then I will start eliminating those who are known to be the children of other people, those who are way too old/young to be mine. I hope this will leave me with a reasonable field of candidates to research thoroughly -- i.e., buy pension records, death certificates, and the like. Think there is a possibility yours might be mine? Even if not, do you have his Civil War Service info (military unit) etc. ! to put him into my database?
