My list of companies recruited in Dale & Henry shows: G, 15th Ala. Inf. Regt. D, 59th Ala. Inf. Regt.(some Barbour, too) E, 59th Ala. Inf. Regt.(some Barbour, too) A number of men from Henry County appear in each one of these. Your list includes 2nd Co. A, 60th Ala. Inf. Regt. I believe that's supposed to be 60th Georgia, "Irwin Invincibles". You should add Co. E, 60th Ala. Inf. Regt, the "Henry Guards", as well as Robert J. Chisholm's Cavalry Co., which became Co. I, 5th Fla. Cav. Battn. ADAH also has the following Henry County company rolls: Bryan's Company Curry's Company Jeff Davis Rebels Fowler's Company Franklin Guard Gordon's Company Henry Prancers Knowles' Company McCalley's Company Smith's Company Ward's Reserve Battalion Yancy Rangers I haven't reviewed these yet, but hope to do so in the near future. Hope this helps you.

I'm new at this researching and was wondering if someone could help me. My 2ed greatgrandfather was John A. Rikard . He and his 4 brothers were all killed in the war. He, George Morgan, Dennis, Henry S. were in the 36th Alabama Company G and Christian M. Rikard was in the 53rd Alabama company F. This is all I know is there someplace I can go to to find out more? Thank you for any help. Shirley Gibson Raines <shirleyg27@aol.com

I once ran into a woman who had an ancestor who had the exact same name as my great-great grandfather, and her ancestor had a son with the exact same name as a son of my great-great grandfather, but they were not, by other evidence, the same people. Sometimes it does get weird. Another possibility is that the soldier mentioned IS your ancestor, but you're thrown off because the county lines in question have shifted and changed in some way over time. Check that out in one of the many guidebooks available, one of which is The Handy Book for Genealogists. It has a section for every state which lays out the ways county lines have shifted when, for instance, a couple of small counties were formed out of one big one. Your public library or a local genealogical society will probably have that and other books. Another book for lots of information on how and where to do genealogy research, including finding out about shifting county lines, is The Source: a Guidebook of American Genealogy. It may be that your ancestor was born in the county when it was part of the one mentioned in your source, but that the part in which his birthplace lies later split off and became another county. Good luck. Karen Rhodes
Question: My g-g-grandfather's name appears on several Civil War soldiers lists as being in the Alabama 7th Cavalry, Co. H.. However, neither county in which he resided at that time (Marengo, Clarke border) is not one of the counties listed as home counties for soldiers in that company. Am I barking up a potentially wrong tree or is there a chance the soldier named on the muster lists IS the same as my g-g-gpa? Sherry

The cross makes a neat memento to go along with one's Confederate keepsakes. Another idea is to purchase a full size Cross of Honor and install it at your Confederate ancestor's burial location. And ~PLEASE~ if your Confederate ancestor doesn't have a tombstone, order a free one from the Veteran's Administration. Regards, Glenn Jones Brig. Gen. Stand Watie SCV Camp 1303 Oklahoma I. T.

The 35th and 57th Alabama Infantry Regiments were indeed consolidated on April 10, 1865. However, both of these commands lost their original identity to become part of the consolidated 27th Alabama. That's why you see men from the 35th, 49th, 55th and 57th with duplicate index entries in the 27th Alabama. If they were still on roll at the time these units were consolidated, their names will also be listed with the 27th Alabama. I've gotten off track with my reply. I intended to demonstrate that someone from the 35th Alabama could be listed with the 27th, but not the 57th. Charlie's intent was well placed, but the specifics were wrong.

With a little work, I can provide something much more specific, such as this list of units from Cherokee County, Randolph's neighbor to the north: http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcherok/ch-units.htm However, it may be that the questioner just needs someone to do a little research on a specific soldier. In either case, please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com for assistance.
Dear Will, I sincerely hope that if your family has this treasure that you will keep it in your family. Yes, they do bring 'big bucks' from e-bay but the honor that it represents when was bestowed on your Grandfather is priceless. D. A. Bass-Frazier
D.A. and other listmembers, No, my family as far as I know, do not have this treasure. I would never consider selling something so valuable to my ancestor's and descendant's lives. I just thought it was interesting the day I decided to learn the history of the Cross it was listed there. Will Sharp

I would like to thank everyone for the information on this Cross of Honor. I am going to send for the record of my grandfather's as this will help me date the picture more precisely. After I received your info, I decided to check on ebay and today they sold one which also included the name on the bar and documentation for $606.01 . Will Sharp

I have a picture of my ggrandfather who served in the Civil War in Co. E 49th AL Inf. and it is believed also in Co. G 49th AL Inf. He was discharged (pension papers) April 1865 Appomatox C. H. In the picture, he has on his lapel a bar pin with an Iron Cross (?) hanging from it. The person who gave me the picture says it was awarded to him in the war and that he served under Robert E. Lee. Can anyone tell me anything about this pin and how I find out if he did, indeed, serve with Robert E. Lee? Thank you. Will Sharp
