Supposedly in Richmond on May 1, 1865. I am trying to find out how he died and if it was in Richmond. I also have no idea who his parents were or how he got to Alabama. Only my mom is left and does not know anything else about him. Thank you for any help.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/777.1 Message Board Post: The dates are different in this man's service record. He belonged to a company recruited in Washington and Clarke Counties, the "Dickinson Guards". This command served as Company "F", 32nd Alabama Regiment. Along with many other members of his regiment, Reynolds was captured south of Nashville at LaVergne TN on Oct. 7, 1862. Confederate prisoners were exchanged two days later and allowed to return to their units. However, Reynolds failed to return, and appears on the company roll for Feb. 1863 as a deserter. That's the last entry in his file. I cannot confirm the other information in your post.

Higgins on a register of Confederates buried in Oxford cemetery. The list appeared in Confederate Veteran magazine in 1910, and the name is just above another name for a veteran of the 22nd Alabama. No unit is listed for W. F. Higgins -- he is listed as a member of an unknown Alabama unit. That may be the source of the confusion. In my opinion, he could be one of several veterans: W. Higgins of Co. H, 19th Ala. Regt. of Cherokee Co. Wm. H. Higgins of Co. K, 54th Ala. Regt. of DeKalb Co. Wm. Higgins of Co. F, Russell's 4th Ala. Cav. of Madison Co. The right man may be the first in this group.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/168.163.1 Message Board Post: I'm sure a number of soldiers didn't come home after the war ended. As for meeting a woman in a hospital, other than laundresses and other auxillary personnel, most of the people assigned or hired for medical duty were men. During the Civil War hospital were considered unfit places for a respectable lady to be. Women of any social station and/or education were strongly discouraged from having direct contact with sick and wounded men, unwashed and of frightful appearance. Accounts of female nurses in the Confederacy, such as those of Kate Cumming and Phoebe Pember, demonstrate that they overcame any number of obsticles and objections in order to take a position in a hospital. Cedar Run was the first battle for the 47th Alabama, which served under "Stonewall" Jackson's command. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist with copies of a service record.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/772.2 Message Board Post: Most of the men who joined the 21st Alabama were from Mobile. Their records appear in alphabetical order in NARA microcopy M-311, reels 284-290. Lorraine, it sounds as if you have the service records of the two Clements men. If I'm not mistaken, the company of the 21st Alabama which surrendered at Fort Morgan was Company "A". Companies “D” and “K” abandoned Fort Powell, Alabama, August 5, 1864, and escaped to Cedar Point, Alabama. The rest of the regiment surrendered with the garrison of Fort Gaines on August 8, 1864, and received paroles at Ship Island, Mississippi, January 4, 1865. For instance, records of Capt. Martin Van Buren Crenshaw, commander of Company "I", show that he surrendered at Fort Gaines, Alabama, August 8, 1864, was exchanged at Ship Island, Mississippi, January 4, 1865, and surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, May 10, 1865. It's possible that other men from the regiment were serving away from their companies, at Fort Morgan instead of Fort Gaines. It's just a bit surprising.
