I don't like to rule out military records when an initial isn't right. Clerks just weren't too careful when these files were created, and it's not unusual to find an index card showing one name, and records showing another. Differences may be just enough to throw you off the trail if you're being too strict with your search. I remember seeing an Alabama service file that had complete records of three different men filed under one index entry. If you know where this man lived in 1860, it should help us.

I had a list of Benjamin Perrys and they did not have a middle initial. He had a nephew in Colquetts unit in 1st Ark. Inf. Do you think he could have joined the same unit, although they were in different Companies?? His date of death looks related to the War. June 17, 1863. I know the Ark. and Alabama boards are different so I understand if you can not help with the 1st Ark. records. You have been working with a long time looking for my grandfathers, and I appreciate all your efforts. Mary Frances

Most houses were two to four rooms and would not have been large enough. I'm not certain that any building in Moulton has survived from that period. Does the pension show what unit this man belonged to? There are records for a G. W. Jones in the 26th and 35th Alabama, both regiments recruited in north Alabama. But you didn'y say where this man lived in 1860.

Since you're not certain of a middle initial, I'd suggest B. P. Perry of Co. "K", 8th Alabama Infantry. That company was recruited by Duke Nall before the war and called the "Southern Guards". Soldiers came from Perryville, Radfordsville and other small communities in Perry County. Gov. A. B. Moore issued commissions to Capt. Nall and his lieutenants on Jan. 8, 1861. In his letter to Gov. Moore, Nall says, "Allow us to add (not however in a trustful Spirit) that we are not organized for mere child’s play but Sir we hold ourselves in readiness to march at your first call.” The company was assigned to the 8th Alabama Regiment, which organized at Richmond Va. on June 10, 1861. If you're interested, I can check the service record for a date of death. Some people enjoy waiting on things. If not, I can copy and mail CSA service records in a week or two, instead of the four or five months it takes the folks in Washington to process a request.

However, in order to leave the state, a county would have to form its own "state" government or join another state. Winston County is part of Alabama today, so it would have to have been "readmitted" to the state at some point. Obviously neither of those events happened. The story is simply used to illustrate the point that a number of citizens could be found in Winston and other Alabama counties who didn't support the Confederacy. I've heard people repeat this story all my life, and have conversed with much more knowledgable men who have written on the subject. There's no substance to it whatsoever.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xhC.2ACE/811.2 Message Board Post: Gail, Of course Winston County did not actually remain in the Union. There was some talk at the time about Winston county seceding from Alabama (hence the nickname “Free State of Winston”) However, Since counties are political subdivisions created by States it would be impossible for them to secede without the consent of the State in question (and Winston County certainly did not do so.) Sentiment in the County, as in many upland parts of the South, was divided. Winston County furnished about equal numbers of troops to the US and CS. Many who went into the federal army did so to avoid being conscripted (or hung) by the CS government. Many of these men (from all over North Alabama) served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (US).

SgtMaj Bob and all others, I received this from a good friend and as a Marine, I wanted to share it with other "Leathernecks" to let them know that the Corps is as tough as ever. And to those who think that women don't belong or can't pull their weight. Hot Damn, this one did. GUNG HO, and let's hear it for the Colonel. Gunny Peek "Good night Chesty, where ever you are !" The following two messages came from two different friendswithin minutes of each other. Message #1 For all those who want a little more kumbaya avec les francaise, here's a little tidbit from the UPI: PARIS, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- French author Thierry Meyssan has sparked outrage, ridicule--and a rush of book sales--since he published "9/11: The Big Lie" last March. His claims: That the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center were part of a dastardly plot hatched by members of the U.S. military and secret services, along with Bush administration hawks. Their goal, according to Meyssan: Partly to pump up defense spending and pave the way for future, oil-driven wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Readers in Europe, the Middle East and South America have snapped up copies of "The Big Lie," now published in more than a dozen languages. Roughly 230,000 copies of the book were sold in France, and it remained on the country's best-seller lists for weeks. A follow-up, "Pentagate," was released in June. Merde -- baisez le francais! ___________________________________________________________ Message #2 God Bless America! Damn, I love this place . . . >From a Marine in Bosnia. Note the signature, but read it last. "A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia). A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war. He said if such a thing happens, we would not be able to count on the support of France. I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface at some point in the near future anyway. That is why France is a third-rate military power with a socialist economy and a bunch of faggots for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever it had to do, and France's support was only for show anyway. Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden, as evidenced by the fact that the French officer was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around. He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and beat his ass in front of the entire Multi-National Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff. With friends like these, who needs enemies? Mary Beth Johnson, Lt.Col., USMC SEMPER FI! I'm looking for any info on my GG Grandfather Thomas A. Quinley's half brother, William A. Quinley, and his wife and their desendats. William A. Quinley was the son of John Read Quinnelly/Quinley and his 1st wife Nancy Peavy. Nancy died giving birth to William A. Quinley. He was born November 14, 1838 around Conecuh County. After Nancy's death, J. R. Quinley married Elvie Johnson (Daughter of Silas and Tempy Johnson of Conecuh Co.) and they had several children including Thomas A. Quinley, my GG Grandfather. It seems that after this, William A. Quinley would go and live with his Grandparents, Archibal and Susannah (Read) Quinnelly of Conecuh Co. William A. Quinley was in the Civil War and here is his Civil War info: Command: Co. E. 4th Ala. Regt. Inf. -Capt. Fonck D. Bowels Rank: Private (age 23) Enlistment: March 13, 1862 at Sparta, AL-- 3 yrs. (Conecuh Co.) Wounded in 2 Engagements during battle. Wounded at Cains Farm on July 1862 and Gettysburg July 3, 1863. I have not found a trace of William A. Quinley after this 1863 date. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance, Leon Weekley

Thank you so very much for the info! I have several other soldiers that I need to order files on from AL and haven't gotten around to doing it yet! And thanks, too to Will Peek, who responded offline! Great info and thanks for taking the time to steer me in the right direction! Just FYI, I did finally find a little mention of the 22nd on the following web page, for those that are interested (about 1/2 way down the page) http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/gardner.html I haven't compared the info on this page to that on the Soldiers' & Sailors' site, that Will sent me a link to, which is here: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm Thanks again for all the help!
