Hello All: Here is a great way to honor you ancestors on Memorial Day. Go to <A HREF="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=abr"> http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=abr</A> and you can place a online memorial or also called a "Virtula Grave" at the website. When you create it you can add photos of the person and place "Virtual Flowers" on there grave. This is great if you can't visit their grave in person. I have added alot of virtual graves for my family and ancestors. Just thought I would share this with everyone. Leon

Joiner served in the 1st Alabama Regiment, but appear to have been from Pike County. There's also a Moses Q. Joiner who served in the 57th Alabama Regiment, but no company was stated. Some members were recruited in Barbour County. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist with a copy of any Confederate service record or pension application.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xhC.2ACE/827.1 Message Board Post: Pat -- Just because it's not on the internet doesn't mean the information doesn't exist. In this case, there's almost too much. A good starting place for anyone interesting in Alabama units is Dr. Ken Jones and his Confederate unit bibliography: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/albiblio.html Note that there are eight published sources on the 40th Alabama. The one which will interest you was written by Captain Samuel H. Sprott of Company "A", the "South Sumter Guards". Here's a review: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0942979559/reviews/002-9770190-0012800 The only Quimbys to serve in an Alabama unit are the three (including Mathew) who appear on roll with Sprott's company. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if you are interested in copies of CSA service records. As a rule, I strongly recommend that people go to Dr. Jones and his site for information about Alabama units. The internet is a great place for people to communicate and can be used as an on-line encyclopedia. However, specialized information such as most people here seek is largely not on line and likely won't for many years, if ever. To find a National Archives service record for an Alabama soldier, search here: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html Quimby is an unusual name, so I entered only the last name, selected "Alabama" and left everything else blank. IN most cases you must enter a first initial. To check for other records on Alabama soldiers, including pension applications, search here: http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/search.cfm It's not complete, but should be in the next year or so. To ask questions or get explanations concerning any issue about the war in Alabama or service records, post your question here: http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/boards/alcwmb/index.cgi? The people who read this board and reply to your questions are published authors and experts. Click on the CWMB Monitor to go to other boards on other Southern states and war-related issues. If the answer doesn't appear there, you've got a pretty tough nut to crack. Finally, contact me about Confederate service records and pension applications. I can copy almost anything. He died of disease in camp at Bristoe, Virginia in August of 1861. His grave is the only one of hundreds there which is still marked. I read a 2 or 3 sentence article in the local paper from before 1900 mentioning a number of his comrades & family (none named in article) had traveled to Manassas (closest town to Bristoe) to mark his grave. Private Leatherwood is mentioned in the book I Saw the Elephant : the Civil War Experiences of Bailey George McClelen, Company D, 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment, pages 17-18, along with an interesting account of the heavy toll of disease in the camps during those first months of the war. McClelen spells William's name as Nunnelley. Regards, J. Pearson

His brother John NUNNELEE served the CSA from Ga but I don't know if he survived.
