    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/830.1.1 Message Board Post: With regard to the records at the ADAH, you can check individual soldiers or units on line, last names "A" through "I". They should have more soon. If you enter 18 for Regimental Unit, enter B for Company, and leave all else blank, you will get 164 names. Some of these are 18th Georgia, some are 18th Alabama Battalion, but most are 18th Alabama Regiment. http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/search.cfm What they have is important and useful, but ADAH doesn't have a complete set of rolls. Most rolls that survived the war are in Washington. They were carded by War Department clerks and microfilmed by the National Archives. National Archives records also include individual pay records, clothing receipts, hospital entries, prisoner-of-war records, paroles and surrenders, court martials and similar items. ADAH has little of that. They do have pension applications and 1907 veterans census data. The "Covington Hunters" organized July 9, 1861, receiving orders to leave Andalusia, Alabama, on July 26, 1861. Members enrolled at Camp Johnston, Alabama, August 7, 1861. Captains of this command, which became Company "B", 18th Alabama Regiment, were as follows: James T. Brady. Resigned on February 23, 1862; later served as Captain of Company “E”, 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. E. J. Rogers. Promoted Captain to rank February 23, 1862. Resigned April 28, 1862. Samuel Durham McClelen. Appointed Captain April 21, 1862; formerly Captain of Company “F”, Blount’s 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion. Resigned August 28, 1862, claiming to be overage and deficient in training for military command. Later served as Captain of Company “F”, 9th Alabama Infantry Battalion. [DAB4:1092] Orville A. Stringer. Elected Captain on July 21, 1862. Mortally wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia, September 20, 1863. Thomas Hardwick. Promoted Captain September [20,] 1863. Surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, May 10, 1865. The 18th Alabama Regiment saw action at Shiloh, went to Mobile for a year afterwards, and was assigned to the Army of Tennessee in April 1863. For that point until the war ended the regiment served under Generals Clayton and Holtzclaw. A more detailed history of both these officers and the 18th Alabama appears here: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/clayton.html#18th-Inf This site is maintained by Ken Jones, who does a great job. Click on the bibliography link to find all publications on the 18th Alabama. For instance, a new book on the 18th was published just last year based on letters written by Capt. Moxley of Company "A" from Coffee County. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist you further.

    2. Pitts, Alan
    3. Micajah Harper was elected captain of the "Andalusia Beauregards". This company organized January 12, 1861, and entered Confederate service at Montgomery, Ala., Aug. 29, 1861, as Company "A" of the 1st Alabama Infantry Battalion. At the end of 1861 the 1st and 6th Alabama Battalions merged to form the 25th Alabama Regiment. Capt. Harper's company continued to carry the letter designation "A". Micajah Harper was killed while leading his company in the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. David Harper enlisted later with Company "H", 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers. This company organized at Elba, Alabama, August 18, 1862, members mustering at Cotton Gin, Mississippi, February 8, 1863. A contact who has studied the 53rd Alabama in some detail can provide day-to-day information about that command. Please reply to pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist you with copies of a Confederate service record, pension application or other related historical material. Shockley appears as a member of Company "A", which was the 1862 letter designation of original Company "F". If that's correct, this man is from Talladega County, where this ocmpany was recruited. I don't know of any individual pictures of anyone from the regiment; if they exist today, they probably belong to descendants or collectors. Group pictures on the shores of Pensacola Fla. were taken by the New Orleans photographer Edwards, as mentioned in the post about the 1st Alabama Artillery above. You might also check the bibliography given for Dr. Ken Jones in his Alabama in the Civil War web site. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xhC.2ACE/829.1 Message Board Post: This man is a little old to have volunteered, being over age forty when Lincoln was elected. The draft law passed in April 1862 required service of men ages 18 to 35. You might find him on the rolls of Butler County militia companies, which accepted younger teens and men up to age sixty as well as exempts. There are several Hearns in Company "K", 1st Alabama Regiment. These are George W., J. C. and Elijah Hearn. However, that company was from Autauga County. There is an abundance on this regiment, including a history of Company "K". Dr. Ken Jones has a bibliography of all Alabama units which he keeps up to date: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/albiblio.html#1st-Inf Don't be mislead by the label "infantry". This regiment operated heavy artillery at Pensacola, Island Ten, Port Hudson and Mobile, from 1861 to 1864. Some of the best known photographs made of Confederate troops during the war were made of this regiment at Pensacola in 1861. The Edwards photos often show officers and men manning their artillery pieces, pointed across the bay at Fort Pickens. There were a couple of other possibilities, such as Joseph M. Hern of Co. "F", 9th Alabama Regiment, but he's from Athens AL. I also checked J. M. Horn of Co. "E", 15th Alabama Partisan Rangers. That company was recruited in Butler County, but his first name is James. The ADAH in Montgomery has rolls of County Reserves, AKA 1st Class Militia. I'll bet he's on one of them. He may be listed among the governor's papers of men who applied for an exemption from service. There's a file for each Alabama county -- all 52 -- for requests and petitions made to the war-time governors on this subject. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmali.com if I can provide copies of a Confeerate service record or pension application. I also copy Revolutionary war service records and pension applications. We believe Joseph died in the service of the CSA., probably with an ALA unit. The most likely soldier we have been able to find in the roster of Conferderate soldiers is a Sgt. JM Hearn, 1st ALA Heavy Artillery, Co. K... However, there does not seem to be much written down about this unit (which I don't believe is the same as the 1st ALA Artillery Batallion...)
