I plan to follow them. I am researching Andrew W. Largent who served in the 40th Alabama Infantry, Company "B" (Picken's Planters). He was a 4th Sergeant and I am interested in learning more about what his specific duties might have been. The 40th Alabama was most active during the Civil War and I have been able to follow their path. Their activities are most interesting! I am waiting anxiously for records from Alabama and D.C. concerning Andrew W. Largent. They never seem to come fast enough.....but thank goodness the records are available. Again, thank you so much. I really appreciate your fast response.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xhC.2ACE/839.1 Message Board Post: Linda -- There's really not very much on the subject available, so this was an interesting research project. As established by law on March 6, 1861, infantry and cavalry companies were allowed four sergeants and four corporals each. Congress added a 5th sergeant on Aug. 21, 1861. Monthly pay was established at eleven dollars for privates, twelve dollars for musicians, thirteen dollars for corporals and seventeen dollars for sergeants. As the senior non-commissioned officer, the 1st Sergeant had a specific set of duties. Sergeants and corporals were numbered according to seniority. As vacancies occurred, they were customarily promoted by seniority. However, since appointments were made at the discretion of the company commander, we sometimes see a 3rd Corporal move to 5th Sergeant, or something like that. Other than the specific duties given to the 1st Sergeant, I'm unaware of any duties assigned to other non-commissioned officers. This source -- the best on line I could find on the subject -- suggests that duties of corporals were little different from those of sergeants, except thay they were considered assistants to sergeants. This is a reenactor website, but the detail you may want is here: http://www.17thgeorgia.com/duties.html You might consider posting this query on the Alabama in the Civil War Message Board, or one of the other associated state sites listed on the Civil War Monitor: http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/boards/alcwmb/index.cgi? A number of knowledgeable people read these queries daily and will be happy to respond to questions like these.

As much info as is available, there must be something that explains the responsibilities of a 4th Sergeant. I'm sure I'm just missing the info. Your help is appreciated.

Arnold was my great-great grandfather who served in the same units it sounds like as yours. My daughter and I just visited Vicksburg and got a copy of his certificate of service. Since they both served for Hilliard and both became part of the 59th it seems they probably at least met if not friends. Life is something isn't it? John M. is buried in a small cemetery in Midlothian, TX. The cemeter is St. Paul Cemetery, where my family help settle. I really don't know anything else about his life at this time except he was born in Georgia. Good luck to you and your endeavors. Dianne

Judging from the service record index, looks like all the Birchields/Burchfields moved away before the war. It helps to know exactly where the people you want to find lived in 1860; that eliminates all the duplicates and dead ends. You referenced Jasper, which is the county seat of Walker County. Directly south of Jasper on the Warrior River is a community called Burchfield's Store in Tuscaloosa County. Burchfields settled that area well before the war. One of my ancestors served in Co. "G", 11th Alabama Regiment with John T. Burchfield from that area. He has an extensive service record as well as an Alabama pension application. Another unit recruited in that area was Company "G", 26th Alabama Regiment. Officers included 2nd Lt. Andrew J. Burchfield, who eventually became Captain Burchfield. Other members of this company were George W., G. B., M. D./N. D.,and Wilson Burchfield. Another company from the Tuscaloosa/Walker area was Company "K", 43rd Alabama Regiment. We find James P. (17), William T. (28) and William (56) Burchfield in that unit. (xx) = age. There are Alabama pension applicatoins for A. J. and G. B. Burchfield. The only other units that include Birchfield/Burchfield names on roll from this part of Alabama are Co. "C", 41st Alabama, recruited in Pickens County. James M. and M. Burchfield are found with that command. There is also a James J. Burchfield on roll with Co. "K", Hatch's 8th Alabama Cavalry, recruited in Tuscaloosa County. You can contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com about copies of service records and pension applications.

I found a cemetery listing for Vincent Adam Hood, but I did not write where I found it down. If someone could do a cemetery look-up, I would really appreciate the info. On this date in 1864 the regiment had marched across the Potomac River with Jubal Early's army and was approaching Washington DC from the northwest. As for a burial at Liberty, if this grave received a permanent marker (a BIG if), your query might get results on a Bedford County VA site in RootsWeb. You might also consider posting on the "Alabama in the Civil War Message Board": http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/boards/alcwmb/index.cgi? You should look here: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/rodes.html#61st This will also give you some idea of the regiment's service.
