Need help finding John C Horsley. He either served in the 47th Georgia or Alabama or the 38th Alabama. I have been unable to find any documents on him. He was born around 1832 in Georgia and died around 1901 in St. Clair County Alabama. My understanding from a cousin he buried at Evergreen Methodist Church near Ashville, Alabama. Need information so we can put a marker on his grave. thanks randy
Thank you all for the reply. Since my cousin found the records in TN library, I also found a researcher in Wash. D.C. who looked up the compiled service records for me there and I am awaiting their arrival to see if there is anything new. I do understand that the Pension Record will have to come from elsewhere if he applied/qualified for one. Unfortunately, I do not know where he went after the war. Elaine
Elaine, Confederate pensions were granted by individual states, not the federal government. Thus there would be no confederate pension records at the national archives. Also, these state pensions were granted to only their own residents. Thus a confederate veteran who later lived in Tennessee would not have an Alabama pension. Further, pensions often were granted only to disabled and/or destitute veterans. Its for this reason I have one great-grandfather who was pensioned, and a second great-grandfather who was not. LDS has a good microfilm collection of pension from most confederate states. Try a library search at their website at www.familysearch.org. But look for your veteran under his state of residence, not the state from which he enlisted and served. Good luck. I believe you can actually go to the archives and do a search. I think a family member of mine did this. ??? Ellie, Do you know where your soldier lived in his later years? This is the first place to start w/ seeking Confederate pension records. If it will help, Texas has an online listing of the names of recipients of Conf. Pensions paid there. Yr. Obt. Svt., D. A. Bass-Frazier 36th Ala. Regiment & Ala. Confederate PENSION records are only maintained by the state governments. The records known as the Confederate "Complied Service Records" are at the National Archives. Other records vary. My personal opinion as a former reference librarian, I think that ADAH suggests the National Archives because it is POSSIBLE that there may be other records there and reference professionals don't like to send patrons away without some suggestion for further research. I found mine in the "Alabama Room" at the Anniston, AL public library. They have the microfilm for confederate records there. Here is the title of the microfilm I found mine on. Call # Alabama, Micro Co.#M311_427, 47th Infantry Hu-Le Compiled Service Records of Confederate soldiers who served in Organizations from the State. It really looks like it may be a pension that was filed because it lists his widow and list a date filed but doesn't say what exactly was filed. That is why I wondered where to look for it. P. I also sent money to the Alabama Archives for a CW military record. I already had the company he served in. But they could not find anything. They suggested I send to the National Archives for the record. Confed. Arch., Chap. 10, File No. 2, page 59 -- this appears to be an abbreviation for citing chapter 10, file number 2, page 59 of what could be a serial title. I recommend going back to the source where you found this citation and see if there is a full TITLE listed for this source. It could be in the bibliography, footnote, etc. If you have the specific title, I will be happy to help in locating additional information about it. The information that the Alabama Archives has available does not appear to match the source that is cited. They will send copies of whatever can be found in the Alabama Consolidated Military Records (a microfilm source that is from the National Archives); pension applications - a microfilm copy of the pension applications and supporting documentation and/or letters that may have been required with the processing of the application; notes from entries matching your soldier's name that were culled from the "Regimental Files" which are collections of documents that were solicited from or sent to the Archives many years ago. Examples of items that may be included in the Regimental Files are local county home guard muster rolls; letters from soldiers listing names from their company/regiment, etc. as best could be remembered by them. Thus, not knowing what you obtained from the Family History Center, I can not offer an opinion about whether it would be worthwhile to ask the ADAH for copies of its records. Yours, D. A. I too ran across the Confed. Archives, Chap. 10, File No. 2, page 59 and wrote to the Dept of Archives and History asking what it was. They also have a website: www.archives.state.al.us They sent me a form which lists the categories they will search for $20.00. Among them were the AL Conf. Military records which include: Compiled Service Record index cards, Muster rolls and pension applications and Other AL Military records: Militia records (incl. Indian Wars, War of 1812, Mexican War and other pre-Civil War service, Rev. War, Spanish-American War and WWI. No mention of a Confederate Archives but maybe there is no such thing anymore and the records are listed under the above Conf. Military records. Before I send my $20.00 I want to make sure they are sending something that I dont already have copies of. I got copies of my David Clark's records through the Family History Center. Good luck.
