Hello gang. I am looking for info about the Phillips clan in particular, Thomas Jefferson Phillips from Walker County. On his tombstone it says 13th Ala. Part Rangers. Yet I have yet to find in my limited resources. Does anyone have a list of these men? Here is what I know about the Rangers. 13th Alabama Battalion Partisan Rangers (merged with 15th Battalion to form 56th Alabama Regiment, Partisan Rangers (Cavalry). I also found some info that was a bit scary. It seems not many liked these groups. Can someone explain just what they would have done? Thanks for your reply. I don't have specific information about this man. However, if you are interested in his experience, I could identify several sources about the regiment. The 'Alabama' regiment was commanded by General Forrest's brother Jeffrey and organized in the summer of 1863. The other initially formed as a battalion under Nathan Bedford Forrest at Memphis in October 1861. Although four of its eight companies were from Alabama, this regiment appears in the Official Records as a Tennessee command. Company "H" of Forrest's Battalion was Capt. Henry Milner's "Russell Rangers" from Marshall County Ala. This company organized at Guntersville, Alabama, September 15, 1861. Members later formed Company “K”, Russell’s 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. In March of 1863 Russell's Alabama Cavalry had been assigned to picket duty northwest of Shelbyville. There are records of skirmishes at Unionville, Rover, Eagleville and College Grove in this area. It's possible that 1) the skirmish was not recorded, 2) the date on the record is wrong, 3) your ancestor was wounded on one day and died on another, or 4) your ancestor died of disease or some other cause. There may be other reasons, but I can't think of another now. Please contact me at pittsaj14@hotmail.com if I can assist further.
I found through a search at ancestry.com a Thomas J. Meeks in the 15th Alabama Infantry, Company E., signed up as Private and discharged as a private. His allegiance was confederate. Don't know if that helps. Hope so. P. Forister
My grGrandfather served w the 4thALCalvary(Russell's)Reg't and his brother served with the 1stTN Indpt Vedette Cavalry(Union). There was also a skirmish including these two units at Larkins Landing. My gg grandfather Alexander Sims Enlisted in Guntersville, Ala on Jan 15, 1862. According to his widows pension application, the unit was the above mentioned. Evidently his military records are missing because she made application by affidavit. For years I have assumed that he would have wound up in Co H of Russell's Regiment of 4th Ala Cav. He was listed on a battlefiled report as killed in action on march 17, 1863. The 4th Ala was engaged near Shelbyville, Tenn, March, 4th - 7th, but I cannot even find a skirmish on the 17th. Could he possibly have been moved to some other unit other than Co H of Russell's 4th. Ala Cav.? He had two neighbors serve in Co K of 4th Ala., and one future son-in-law and one future brother-in-law served in Co H of Russell's Reg. It is also quite likely he personally knew Col Russell prior the war. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Ed Sims

Much of this information comes from Beall's files. His entry as an enlisted man in Faulkner's Company may be found under "Capt. Faulkner's Company, Chambers Cavalry", in reel 37 of NARA's Compiled Alabama Confederate Service Records (M311). Much of the rest appears under the 8th Confederate Cavalry in reel 19 of NARA's Compiled Service Records of Organizations Raised by the Confederate Government (M258). John Thompson's "Emuckfaw Rangers", a company recruited in Tallapoosa and Randolph Counties. This command left Daviston, Alabama, January 30, 1862, mustering at Montgomery, Alabama, February 5, 1862. Officers and men later served as Company “H”, 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. During the short period you have mentioned, this company belonged to Beall's (not Bell's) Battalion. Writing from Lafayette, Alabama, on January 13, 1862, Thaddeus Beall reported that three hundred "Cavalry Rangers" had enlisted in his command. Three companies organized on February 15, 1862, at Montgomery, Alabama, as the 1st Battalion, Alabama Mounted Men, a designation assigned by the Adjutant and Inspector General's Department on May 10, 1862. A fourth -- Captain Slaughter's company -- transferred on March 13, 1862, before the battalion left Montgomery. Officers and men enlisted for twelve months in Confederate service. Thaddeus S. Beall, a Mexican War veteran, had formerly been a member of Falkner's Alabama Cavalry Company. Beall served as Major from February 15, 1862, his official appointment dated April 30, 1862. He later served as Major of the 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment.

Perhaps you've not seen John W. Inzer's book on that command; he was captured and went to prison-of-war camp with many other members of the regiment. Here's the citation: Inzer, John Washington. The Diary of a Confederate Soldier: John Washington Inzer, 1834-1928. Edited by Mattie Lou Teague Crow (Huntsville : Strode Publishers, 1977) If we knew the soldier's name, Company letter, and his residence im 1860, we might be able to put together some facts abut him.

If it's of any help to know this, the pension might not necessarily have been applied for in Alabama, if the person had moved to another state. Pensions were administered in the south by the states, not by the federal government. My husband's great-grandfather, Daniel McLeod Marshall, enlisted in Alabama, but filed for his pension in Florida, where he had moved. Pension applications weren't necessarily applied for right after the war, either. For one thing, various states passed legislation relating to pensions at various times. For another, many (if not most) would not have applied until they had become infirm. Daniel Marshall, for instance, didn't apply for his pension until 1902. For what it's worth. Karen Rhodes
