Author: cindexer Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.Military.civwar.al.al/428.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 36th Regiment, Alabama Infantry OVERVIEW:36th Infantry Regiment was organized at Mount Vernon, Alabama, in May, 1862, with men from Mobile, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Fayette, Sumter, and Monroe counties. The unit was involved in constructing the defenses at Oven and Choctaw Bluffs, then was stationed at Mobile until April, 1863. Assigned to General Clayton's and later Holtzclaw's Brigade, it participated in difficult campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Transferred to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, it continued the fight at Spanish Fort. At the Battle of Chickamauga it was reported that the regiment had 28 officers, 429 men, and 401 guns on September 19; and 20 officers, 338 men, and 316 guns on September 20. It sustained 147 casualties at Chattanooga, and mustered a force of 353 effectives in December, 1863, and about 300 in November, 1864. The unit lost 110 wounded and captured at Spanish Fort, and few were included in the surrender on May 4, 1865. Its ! commanders were Colonels Thomas H. Herndon, Robert H. Smith, and Lewis T. Woodruff; and Major Charles S. Henagan. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I cannot find him after the 1860 census. I found N. Gurley on Fold 3. None of the documents there give an age or dob. N. Gurley enlisted at Camden on Oct. 10, 1863. His release date was June 18, 1865. All I have to go on is his prison release form. By order no. 109, the Quartermaster's Department provided him transportation home. He boarded a train in Chicago to Louisville on the 18th. He boarded a L N R R train in Louisville on June 20th (see "Stamp at Louisville" attachment). On June 23rd, he was given two days rations in Eufaula, Alabama (see "Eufaulla Note" attachment). The document appears to show his name to be Heuton Bard (see "Signature" attachment). I have checked the online records from Camp Douglas with no luck. If you are familiar with these documents, they are not indexed and have considerable water damage making for unpredictable results. If anyone has any tools or references, please contact me. It's possible that I have misinterpreted his signature/name. Thanks. . Author: CordeliaElliott Surnames: Lewis Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.Military.civwar.al.al/1954/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am seeking the second G. N. Lewis, who both served in Company G, 9th Alabama along with a John Lewis and my distant uncle, George Noland Lewis. 1) George Noland Lewis (1 November 1837 - 17 September 1862) Born in Butler County, Alabama the son of George Noland Lewis and Sarah Elizabeth Greene, killed outright at Antietam. 2) G. N. Lewis (? - 5 February 1865) "Slightly wounded" at Antietam, fought at Gettysburg where he was severely wounded in the left groin, spent many weeks at Camp Letterman, transferred to a CSA hospital, sent home on furlough, went on to fight at the Wilderness, was captured there, sent to Point Lookout and thence to Elmira, where he died. It appears from my research that the two G. N, Lewises have been confused in some genealogical research. Both men were the same age, from the same place, enlisted on the same day, in the same company and are referred to in their military records as G. N. Lewis. Indeed, I was stymied when I fist went through the two collections of records from Co. G. How could two men of the same name serve in the same company? Did Uncle Noland really survive Antietam to die in captivity at Elmira? Now I realise that they are two men so if anyone could enlighten me on the identity and antecedents of the "other" G. N. Lewis, I would be most grateful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Was your ancestor also a member of the 58th Alabama? I will have to go through my files to see if he is mentioned. I know I have his service records but you probably already have access to them. Please email me. If your ancestor is not in the 58th I would still like to obtain a copy of that page where Captain Holland is mentioned if at all possible. Thanks. Finding information on William (various middle initial depending on record) Kirkland is a nightmare as there were a ton of Kirkland's in Henry County Alabama and almost as many Williams. I have found the family listed in the 1860 census but they do not show up again until the 1880 census (both times in Henry County Alabama). I have scoured the 1870 census looking for Delilah and their children (Nancy, Jonas/Jonah, and Susannah) with no luck. Any help as to where to start looking again would be helpful...thanks!! Gill Holland? He served in the Co. E, 58th Alabama Infantry and is buried in the Confederate Burials, Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, Georgia. I am researching an ancestor's diary in which he is mentioned as the diary writer's "Truest and best men...one of the noblest and best hearted men living." Are you a descendant? Have any stories or information about him? I would be most grateful. Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've attached the images of the complete file of service record cards for your reference. Also attached is a copy of a muster roll from ancestry.com. Those rolls were the ones used to create the service record cards. There was a Micajah Culpepper that also served in Company G of the 39th. He was discharged in 1862 (see attached certificate) because of a bad knee that, apparently, had scarred due to a burn and prevented normal movement. I see a photo of him on findagrave.com... http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=41&GSvcid=297940&GRid=10064202& Looking online, it looks like the Old Gray and Bethel Cemeteries were used for Confederate burials in Knoxville, though I'm sure that there were many burials in other cemeteries where convenient to the circumstances. Many were just not marked, so your search is not uncommon. The National cemetery there was started after the Union capture of that city and, probably, excluded any CSA burials. You might post a query at the website below. The people there may be able to give you some better ideas on where to look. http://www.history-sites.com/cgi-bin/bbs62x/alcwmb/webbbs_config.pl Good luck, Scott Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
