In a way it is, however, before you can get that "14 day 'free trial' offer" they offer, you must give them a "way to bill ya".. I have also heard it is very hard to contact them in order to "end" the "free offer" so.. Bottom line, "No such thing as a free lunch"..... -----Original Message----- From: Carol Lackey [mailto:cmlackey2@triad.rr.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 10:00 PM To: AL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [AL-CEN] Offer from ROOTSWEB. This is a "standard" tagline that is included on so many mailing list's.. Please do NOT resend it as a Message to the list. While I appreciate all of your hard work & I am sure I am not the only one. What you do for this list is free by choice. Forwarding a "pay for" service is Against "rootsweb" policy on these lists.. (We can't help the tagline that is added by them, but they do sponsor the server's that service these list's... Somehow, I doubt I stated all of that in the correct manner but.. Bottom line is.. As a post to the list, a fee based service is solicitation & is not the correct thing to do... Maureen List Mom

Not to keep this going, I just want to "butt in" a sec. When I first started my research, I joined ancestry for their "free 14 day trial". The "come on" by them is actually what got me started. I researched every waking minute for 12 days, then sent them an email to stop the free trial. I got an email back saying you can't stop by email, I had to call an 800 number. So I called...I couldn't stop by phone. They sent me back and forth...and by the time they agreed to cancel me, they had billed my card for a full year. It took me 6 months to get that reversed. THEN 6 months later, when my year would have been up...they billed me again! Yes, for another year. THIS time, my lawyer called them I haven't heard from them again. They did the same thing to my cousin. Yep...no such thing as a free lunch, you're right! I've found it may take a little longer going through channels such as these great lists...but the info is free...and MUCH more accurate! Thanks for looking out for us, Maureen...and for all the hard work you do. Have a great week! If this was really free they would not require a credit card #. When I asked them to cancel my 3 month subscription they said I had to call the 800 number too, I said I didn't call the 800 number to start it and I am not calling to stop it. I notified my bank not to pay and if they did they were required to charge it back, because it was unauthorized, and I copied Ancestry. It worked just fine probably because of the bank notification. However, if some kind person had not notified us in advance I would not have known to do all of this prior to the end of my subscription. I started two weeks in advance.
